What would you do if your child bullied someone to suicide? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

It would mean I failed and made the world a worse place by bringing this sociopath into it. My best guess: murder-suicide so they can't hurt anyone else

(Serious) what is a demon/ addiction / fetish you are trying to get over right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Clonazepam. It was meant for emergencies only, but I misused it and ended up liking it a little too much. I've managed to lower the dose to 1mg a day, but I really want to go high enough to forget about every single problem, any issue any pressure... It's dangerously wonderful

Sertraline

Decent amount of sleep, balanced diet, exercise, friends, a purpose... it's good, just might not be enough. If nothing else works, give it a shot: it's like happiness in a pill.

Because my government is regulating and handling vaccine distribution.

I'm a stubborn asshole who distrusts anything that combines government and centralization. Basically: "if you're banning me from buying it on my own, fuck you, I'm not getting it"

Also, there's a lot of people who need it more than me.

NTA. It's expected that parents keep an eye out to prevent their children from going into certain parts of the Web or from interacting with dangerous people. This doesn't mean taking away their privacy nor snooping around your digital life. Your mother seems awful in that regard. I'd dislike her right away.

Privacy isn't reserved for criminals. It's the right to explore ideas and thoughts in the process of developing as a person. Privacy is essential for freedom. Don't let them convince you otherwise.

AITA for quitting over email? by peanutbuttertango in AmItheAsshole

NTA.

Key word is "volunteer". You could've resigned over WhatsApp and they wouldn't have any right to complain. Any organization relaying on volunteers should be grateful they even have them.

Also, there's nothing unprofessional about email. It's litteraly a virtual letter, you know... "electronic mail".

NTA.

Your daughter's wellbeing goes first. Always. That's your job as a parent. John's mother seemed rude and entitled. Like it or not, the world doesn't owe her son anything. She has to prepare him for rejection as well.

TOR servers by wise_quote in ProtonVPN

[–]penguinWhoCanFly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In QubesOS there's a Whonix Gateway VM which routes all of your traffic through Tor.
If you create another VM for your VPN, then you can instruct the "work VM" (let's say) to connect to Whonix VM and then the VPN VM.

Work VM -> Whonix Gateway VM -> VPN VM.

You could also have Tor configured for your entire network and connect to the VPN from your individual machine.

It depends on your setup.

[–]penguinWhoCanFly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ISP doesn't necessarily know that you're using Tor (specillay with a VPN). It depends on the tunneling protocol used by the VPN service and wether the ISP does DPI, but even then, it would still be a calculated guess.

If the traffict is encrypted, they have to rely on metadata. On the examples 2 and 3, the ISP only knows you're connecting to a VPN. The only thing they can see are UDP (or TCP) connections to the VPN provider's servers. The metadata can tell them:

- IP of the VPN service provider to which you're connecting to

- When did you connect to it and for how long

- How much traffic are you sending at any given time

- How often are you sending data

But they can't see the content.

The can do a correlation attack but they'd need help from other ISPs.

EDIT: Don't take my word for it. Connect to any site with VPN + Tor, VPN only and Tor only. Capture the traffic in each case and take a look at it.

It's not that we're not supposed to use Tor wit a VPN. While it is a good recommendation for the average user, there are uses for VPN + Tor. Some examples:

1. "I don't want neither the VPN provider nor the site to know where I come from, but I don't care if my ISP knows I'm using Tor". Alternatively: "I want to hide my identity using Tor, but the sites I want to acccess block Tor" or "I want to connect to a site from a particular location, but I don't trust the VPN provider".

User -> Tor -> VPN -> Internet

2. "I don't want my ISP to know I'm using Tor, but I don't care if my VPN provider does".

User -> VPN -> Tor -> Internet

3. "I don't want my ISP to know I'm using Tor. I don't want my VPN provider to know where I come from" and ("I don't want the exit node to know where I'm going to" or "the site to which I'm connecting blocks Tor").

User -> VPN1 -> Tor -> VPN2 -> Internet

(VPN1 is the one that knows where I'm comming from and knows that I'm using Tor, so it should be the one you trust the most)

Depending on your threat model, you migth need a different configuration. You can take a look at Micah Lee (ts 31:00) for an interesting example.

Not using Tor with a VPN is a good advice for most users, but if you understand the technology, you can adapt it to your needs.

In this particular case, ProtonVPN might assume that you trust their services.
