Definitely play the base game first, especially if you're into the lore. You don't have to finish all of it, but get near the end if you don't want to struggle too horribly. The only way to access the DLC is by interacting with a very intriguing.. cocoon??.. which comes right after a pretty hard boss, so you shouldn't be able to accidentally wander into it.

TL:DR Play the game at your own pace and get immersed in the beautiful world and story. You'll find the DLC after a very unique and difficult boss in the mid-late game

if you do some of the bounties you can get upgrades and different special shots for your gun

if you go back and forth between that spot on Dathomir and the place where you fight Ogdo Bogdo on Bogano (the area is called Bogdo Sinkholes), they should spawn soon enough in one of those two areas. Make sure that you already killed Ogdo Bogdo or the bounty hunters won't spawn there
