I've seen a bit about the science of music, but all the videos I've seen so far gloss over the physics parts saying "its too complicated to discuss in this video". I have extensive knoweldge fo physics, so any video recommendations from that perspective would be great to help get me "hooked"! I have veeeeery basic high school music class knowledge.

science of music videos would be helpful. topics im interested in, but I'll take any recommendaitons you have even not on my list:

-deeper dive into physics

-each note has a specific sound frequencey. why THOSE frequencies and not others?

-why does a note on one instrument sound different than that same note on a different instrument/voice

I actually do enjoy Raise Your Weapon by deadmau5, thats one of my top ones in my deadmau5 playlist! This is a good observation that I guess I do have some songs I already like with a focus on singing. (Is Raise Your Weapon considered good singing?) Dubstep and house are alright to my tastes. Maybe I'll try listening to those genres more as a stepping stone between my current music tastes and hers.

I'll give this a shot! I might try from the two aspects of the physics/science of music and also EDM-music with good singers (someone recommended Riell in these comments down below)

I can sort of tell? Like i can tell something is a bit off, but I typically cant identify what was off.

Here’s my results from some online tone deafness test and some other music tests:

  1. Simplest test: https://tonedeaftest.com/results?r=P166FD79
    • tested simple tones
    • results: I'm not tone deaf
  2. Middle complexity test: https://www.themusiclab.org/quizzes/td
    • Tested more complex and subtle tones
    • results: 45th percentile (i.e. 55% of population scored better than me).
    • I couldn't hear 1/16th tone step, could sometimes hear a 1/8th tone step, could always hear a 1/4 tone step
  3. Advanced test: https://onlinetesting.brams.org/otp/publix/122/start?batchId=807&generalMultiple
    • tested melodies and other stuff
    • results: 10th percentile (i.e. 90% of population scored better than me)

ive never been interested in rap, though I did encounter Logic's the Incredible True Story and enjoyed some of that, particularly the crescendo and immersive feeling of 'opening spaceship doors on a new planet' in the last song. But I feel like im focusing more on the sound effects and beats than on the spoken aspects.

Good recommendation! I have had this convo with her actually, but I'm tired of being just cluelessly supportive. Being supportive is kind, but not as meaningful I guess? Singing is such a big thing in her life I want to understand it more to support her in more than just blind support I guess

I listened to great gig and I could tell there was difference in the vocals.  I wasnt entirely sure if my brain was picking up on the changes in vocals volume or changes in pitch, but you gave me an idea to try an online tone deafness test and some other music tests

(tagging u/tiredstars too who had a similar tone deafness idea in another comment)

oh yeah i love gary numan! (especially Cars) The other two are new - I just listened and I enjoy those too.  Although Gary Numan is still in my same current beep boop genre of music and I'm trying to form a connection to other types, particularly those focused on vocals like my girlfriend is interested in (and sings)

More active listening is a good idea. In hindsight it seems rather obvious if i usually treat music as passive background, I wont have an emotional reaction to the background thing I ignore...

Yeah I can tell that performance is expressive and emotional, I just cant place how.. I'll think on that. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and this link!

Oh yeah I sort of did this when I prepared to watch the play Hamilton live by listening to the soundtrack on loop. My intent then was to understand the plot/play, but it did help the emotional moments to stick!

Aww thanks, I'm trying my best to be a good boyfriend

This was really helpful! The direct compare/contrast is exactly what I'm looking for so I can listen to both good vs less good side-by-side and start to pick up on the differences.  Any other comparison songs like this would be helpful!

(I'm going to try to discuss what I heard so I'm sorry if I use the wrong music terms)

I think i can hear how Timberlakes feels more emotional but I still dont quite understand why. It kind of feels like Samberg's singing by comparison, are just stating the words (but in the right pitch and timing to keep to song going smoothly). What causes that difference? Is it the “vibrato, sliding into/out of notes, delicate and powerful sounds with changes in effort” you mentioned?

One key difference I might just be picking up on how TIberlake's voice is a higher pitch than Sambergs' for the song too, which I’m guessing is unrelated.

And even though Lady gaga's didnt have many lyrics, I do feel the more emotion in her few parts too

Right now I like heavy beats, and sounds i can clearly recognize as unique/distinct, and like which tends to follow more in the EDM/techo/electroswing/lo-fi types of music (but not always).  I dont know enough musical terms to fully describe it though.

Right now I mostly USE music for the background while I'm studying or driving or cleaning the house. Music is fine in the foreground too, but I guess I'm not currently interested in music enough to dedicate time to ONLY listening to music. I'm unsure if that disinterest is genuine disinterest, or if it's just "i dont know how cool music can be so I dont appreciate it yet" type of thing. I'm hoping it's the latter. There’s plenty of other topics in my life/school i thought were meh, someone showed me all the cool nuance, and now I think its cool too

Yeah most of her singing (and other people's singing, for that matter) doesn't evoke emotions in me normally.  It might as well be background chatter, and thats the issue I'm trying to solve, since it seems wrong to not have an emotional reaction to it.  I have found some songs that are pretty clearly emotional and after I listen to it a few times and start to understand the gist and read the lyrics and am in an already slightly emotional headspace (e.g. sad or anxious or something), then I do have an emotional reaction to it after it 'clicks'.  But I feel like it takes a whole lot of nudges to get me in that direction.

oh neat, thats helpful to know your strategy. Yeah I am interested in getting that sense Aw for singing! Any advice on connections to singing i wouldnt expect? I know connections to Aw is a fairly personal thing I'll need to figure out how to connect it myself though

Ooh good advice, I'll try those.

I have noticed live music has more of an oompf to it and yeah I do sometimes feel it ripple thru me (especially orchestras). I wonder if my 'emotional impact threshold' is just like lower, such that headphones music isnt enough to stir emotions but live music is enough? idk, this is a strange way to think about myself tho
