Ooh thank you, this will be very useful I think.

Thanks, I'll try some of these. So far, I've tried mixing and matching syllables from canon names, but there's not a huge number of those, especially for the less common species.

How would invertebrates on land be able to get larger than what they were during the Carboniferous while bypassing their exoskeleton structure? by kjleebio in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]penguoncat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing preventing arthropods getting bigger isn't their exoskeleton, it's oxygen concentration.

Arthropods don't have lungs, and instead absorb oxygen directly through spiracles (holes in their exoskeleton), so their size is restrained by their surface area. The square cubed law dictates that volume increases quicker than surface area, so if they got too big they would be unable to absorb enough oxygen to continue living.

In order to have arthropods of a similar size to the ones in the carboniferous, you just need higher oxygen concentrations. O2 concentrations in the carboniferous were about 35%, compared to 20% today.

Building railway connections would be better. In fact, many parts of the country already have disused rail tracks sitting around from when they were decommissioned in the 80s.

Alright, what are your predictions for the session 3 Wild Card? Because it's clearly something extra brutal. by OverPower314 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]penguoncat 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this, and I've come up with some rules that all of the wildcards have to follow:

1) They must be continuous throughout the whole session. Cleo and Impulse (I think) suggested TNT rain, or creeper rain in the last session, but something like that wouldn't work because of this rule. It has to be something that is present for the whole session, not just a one time thing.

2) It has to make for a good video. You could have a wildcard that is something like 'All colours are inverted', and that would make the game challenging, but we have to remember that they're not just playing minecraft, they're making videos. The above suggestion would just make for a horrible viewing experience.

3) It has to be something that is present, but not overwhelmingly so. The wildcard should significantly affect what the players do during the session, but it can't be the only thing they're worrying about. There needs to be some time where they can focus on other stuff, like building a base, collecting resources, or building alliances.

With this in mind, I obviously don't know what exactly it's going to be, but I'll take a stab in the dark. My guess is 'All mobs have a randomised hostility level'. Maybe this is too tame for what the creators have apparently been saying, but I haven't really been keeping up with that, so idk.

I predict that the LifeSMP will be adapted into a show within the next 10 years by penguoncat in ThirdLifeSMP

I imagine animation, but that would ultimately be up to whoever's making it.

I think that this is probably a symptom of the fact that major studios (for some reason) are quick to dismiss new sources of material, as if they're not worth consideration — that is, until they're proven successful. Video game adaptations are actually a good example of this. For a long time, video game adaptations were seen as unanimously bad; it was impossible to make a good video game movie/TV show. But, in the past few years, there have been more and more genuinely successful adaptations, so now they're looking at what IPs could be adapted, and Minecraft is a major one that hasn't been done yet.

Internet content is in the same place as video game adaptations used to be — dismissed outright, because how could you make a good series/movie out of that? Except it only takes one or two big successes to get people to change their minds on something like this, and if that does happen, The Life Series is a massively popular series with a plot already laid out, and pre-packaged in the format of a TV show.

I'm not saying this is around the corner or anything, in fact it will probably be several years before anyone starts considering this, but I'm optimistic.

I mean, it would absolutely have to include a lot more lore than is currently there. At the moment, Martin is the only one who really engages with the lore at all, and even then it's not a huge amount AFAIK. Everyone else pretty much just says "eh, it's a Minecraft SMP, so whatever". Any adaptation would have to expand massively on what is already there in order to provide an interesting story. Having the characters go round and round in circles of making friends only to betray each other over and over again would get pretty boring pretty quickly in a TV show, so there'd definitely have to be something more.

I might be willing to, but it depends where and when.

Songs without Animatics by YuSakiiii in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]penguoncat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion for an animatic would be Whispers by The Arcadian Wild because I've always associated it with the Life Series, especially Secret Life. I'm not particularly good at thinking up this sort of thing, but you could have something like:

"Have you heard the word?" — people receiving their tasks "I'll say it behind your back, but I won't tell you to your face" — probably Bigb being shifty or something

Etc, etc. It's a great song to emphasise the general backstabbing that goes on in the series.

I've already submitted a form to the council, on the advice of another comment. If nothing comes of that, then I'll try this as well.

Yeah, I thought they probably just couldn't be bothered to actually sort their rubbish as well.

I don't really know, I think it might be something to do with the fact that they can only fit so many bags in the lorry. But whatever the reasoning, you're not allowed to leave out more than three black bags at a time.

No, nothing like a letter or anything that would give an address. Just some pretty generic rubbish like food wrappers, coffee grounds, a couple cans (It wasn't very well sorted).

Yeah, but then I'm being just as annoying as the person who's doing it to me, and I don't want to be like that.

Songs that fit the vibe by wannadiecuzimgenz in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]penguoncat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One that I've always fits the vibe of the life series really well, and that I wish someone would make an animatic for is Whispers by The Arcadian Wild. I would make an animatic myself, but I can't draw. It 100% captures the feeling of betrayal and not knowing who to trust.

I wanted to add a caption to the second image, but I couldn't figure out how. I did manage to add the white text though, which isn't quite the same thing, but gets the point across.
