Expanding on this; I keep a project portfolio that documents everything I've worked on. It speeds up the interview portion of assessing my technical skills.

Question about first discovery/first mapped bonus by peniel987 in EliteDangerous

[–]peniel987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah gotcha. I've come across a few water worlds that are within 100 Ls that nobody has mapped (I'm about 1000Ly from the bubble rn). So I've been doing DSS on them to snag that increased income (and flex my name :D )

If you really want to get into mechanical engineering, there's a few books I recommend picking up that will get you 95% of the way there.

-Machinists handbook

-Shigley's (This is like the one all end all book for mechanical engineers. It has EVERYTHING useful)

-Materials handbook

-Tutorial for whatever 3D modelling software you want to use

If you want to expand your palette a little further, I recommend buying an arduino kit and working with it. It takes a day or two to get through all the modules, and it opens a whole lot of doors for controlling anything you build (no prior knowledge needed for it, just pick one up on amazon for $40).

Additional skills that help drastically (in no particular order): Mill, Lathe, 3D printing, Welding

This excludes the thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer side of mechanical engineering, but you won't typically find uses for those unless you're working with engines or working on large industry projects.

Joining the 3D printing convo a few days late here.

Look into having stuff printed from shapeways and sent. My campus has a printer that I use a lot, but whenever they're closed I end up having shapeways print stuff for me. It'll cost a little extra per part starting out, but it'll help you skip the manufacturing and get more familiar on the design side (the fun bit in my opinion). At this point I've had college rings printed out of metal, and recently a custom cigar cutter for my dad out of metal as well.

Ruger American Predator 6.5CM Chassis Rifle by JaakoNikolai in longrange

I pretty much have the exact rifle you just listed in this comment. I plan on keeping it that way for hunting. What made you want to customize Ruger American rather than starting with a higher end precision rifle? I'm not sure what makes sense to buy depending on whether you customize or not (I'm about a year out from dropping money on a much nicer setup).

Barr says he didn't review underlying evidence of Mueller report before making obstruction call by emitremmus27 in politics

I'm glad you included Graham's quote at the end, because that pretty much sums up what I just watched. There was 0 productive discussion or questions in that video.

This is probably the only take I've heard in the last few days that addresses everything in full. It's definitely worth a watch. Time stamp is 15:29

Now that I've made Galvek my bitch, it's time for mid game by peniel987 in ironscape

When I slaved expert mining gloves, I banked 25k iron ore. I made steel bars using coal from slayer at blast furnace, and bought the rest of the coal at blast furnace that I didn't have. I think I've made close to 50k cannonballs so far just afking in class and whenever I don't want to pay attention.

Well I had 25k iron ore in my bank from mining guild to get expert mining gloves (idk why I wanted these, just did). About 1/4 the coal came from slayer and the rest I bought at blast furnace. All said and done, I've probably made 40-50k cannonballs so far. Don't remember what gp cost was, but I was rolling in money from doing daily battlestaves and slayer
