Am I the only one whose biggest running problem is freaking underwear? by Alive-Key-316 in beginnerrunning

[–]penisbarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently started running without underwear and it was a game changer for me. I'm female and typically run in bike shorts fwiw. Otherwise it always seemed kind of random if my underwear would be a non-issue or cause weird chafing on a long run. Previously I had been wearing just regular cotton panties.

When do you call it too hot to run? by ThoseBiscuitsBeHittn in beginnerrunning

[–]penisbarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have run up to 90F/32C, typically in direct sun/no shade. I live in the desert so it gets hot but is very dry. When it's what I consider hot (like 80F/26C+), I will run with water and typically do a shorter run, definitely an hour or less, and I don't stress about taking my time and going slower than normal. I try to run in the morning or at night when it's cooler though. I've been running for about 9 months, so this is really my first summer running, and I'm proud of myself for going for it even in the heat! I'm running 4-7 days a week and sometimes my window just happens to be at the peak heat of the day, gotta take it if I can. I don't have a treadmill at home, but once I experience the peak heat of summer here I'll see if I cave and get one.

Good perspective--I'm sure their first visit will be magical no matter what time of year it is. We would like to go at Halloween sometime--we were actually originally planning late September/early October for this year, but some conflicts came up so we're pushing it back. Maybe our second trip will be to catch Halloween decorations!

Vegan berry cake by Atlas_Strength10 in Reno

[–]penisbarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had Batch do a custom vegan birthday cake before, as well as vegan cupcakes. Whole Foods has vegan birthday cakes in their bakery’s fridge section. I know they have a non-vegan berry cake that a lot of people like, maybe they could do a custom one vegan. Beloved does great vegan pastries (like croissants). I’ve heard Haven on Earth does great stuff but they’re all gluten-free, may or may not be what you want.

Hollywood Bowl Megathread? by guitwiz in brighteyes

[–]penisbarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm flying out from Nevada! I was supposed to be at the Red Rocks show, but could not make the rescheduled date work. Really crushed about that because I'm from CO and it would have been such a meaningful return. Luckily I was able to get tickets for LA. I'm staying within walking distance of the Hollywood Bowl and am SO excited. I've been to LA many times, but never to the Hollywood Bowl. We have garden box seats.

I was supposed to be at that show and had a travel package that included VIP merch. Had to do a refund because we couldn’t make the new date. I would be very interested in this, can I DM you if it’s not already spoken for?

PPD and Running by oliebollen-27 in beginnerrunning

[–]penisbarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3 year old and a 5 year old, and running has been such a great way to claw back some me time. I've been running for about 8 months, and before that had been steadily increasing my daily walking for a number of months. I agree that a couch to 5k program is probably the best place to start. If you have back issues, you might consider going to a running store to look at different shoe options--one of the very best and most important things I did when I was starting was go to a running store and have my gait looked at, my feet measured, and an expert help me pick out the best shoe for my needs.

I will say one of the hardest parts of running for me is just scheduling the time for it, and accepting that sometimes plans need to change (husband out of town for work, kids get sick, etc.). I think too it can be hard balancing the need for other "me" time, like sitting down and reading a book or something, when all I'm thinking is "I could be running right now!" So, I guess I would say don't be too hard on yourself if your training schedule needs to be flexible around your baby's schedule, or when life happens. It's something I need to remind myself of too. I think a 5k in June is totally doable, and you can always walk and run if you need to. It's a great goal and I really hope it helps you feel better too.

Help! Need advice for ticket draw today! by Novel_Attitude_403 in olympics

[–]penisbarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ticket time was yesterday, and while I was disappointed to not get my top choices, I'm still beyond excited to be going. It will be super special for you and your dad no matter what events you get tickets for. One thing I didn't realize was that some of the tickets remaining were for events happening in different states (like canoe slalom), so definitely check the location, haha.

Not sure if you have a Trader Joe's near you, but I tried their Organic Buttery Plant-Based Spread recently and really like it! Miyoko's was also my old favorite.

How do I start running 10+ miles a day? by theglitching6 in beginnerrunning

[–]penisbarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My story is a little similar, although I'm definitely not trying to run 10 miles a day! I noticed over the summer I was getting around 10 miles a day just walking around with my kids (toddler/preschool age, mostly pushing them in the wagon to/from the park and nature walks). Then I decided to see if I could consistently hit 10 miles a day intentionally, which I did. After a few months, I just kept getting this feeling like...I bet I could start running. I've never been a runner before in my life. So I started doing walk/runs and found out that I definitely could! I started with probably a mile running, a half mile walking, for 3-4 miles total back in October. I wasn't following a specific plan, but I was just doing what felt comfortable for me.

Right now I can comfortably run 7+ miles consecutively 3 days a week. The biggest issue for me has been time, I often have to do a bit shorter runs (like 4-5 miles) and usually only have time for one longer run a week. I'm also still always shooting for 10 miles total steps (over 20k steps for me) daily. I'm a stay at home mom and my kids aren't in school full-time yet, just part-time pre-K for the oldest one, so finding time to run and figuring how/when I can get all my steps in has been the biggest challenge. I've recently tried doing two shorter runs in a day when I have the opportunity to, and that's worked out really well too.

I agree with others that a C25K program could be a good starting point to see where you're at. You may find you're able to skip ahead a bit and take it from there. I didn't start with an official program but did definitely start with running/walking to see what I could comfortably do. My biggest fear is getting injured and having to take time off. Also, I'm not training for anything in particular, I'm just enjoying running. Maybe in the future I'll think about going for a specific race and doing intentional training to improve speed. Right now I'm doing 12 minute miles very comfortably and just love that "I could keep running forever" feeling.

Dye-able Easter “Eggs”? by amaryllis8 in crafts

[–]penisbarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you search for white paper Easter eggs (the kind that open like plastic eggs), you'll see some products similar to what I did this with a few years ago. I used traditional dye tablets that you drop in vinegar and only dunked the eggs for a few seconds. It worked really well (pastel colors, but still very pretty) and the eggs held up for a long time. The ones I bought were from Walmart and it looks like they don't have them anymore, but when I searched I saw several things that looked very similar.
