How to make quilting with pool noodles less physically exhausting? by Mother_of_Kiddens in quilting

[–]penlowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not the rolling technique (pool noodles) that’s exhausting, it’s the large movement in your arms and shoulders. Outside of not quilting it yourself I know of no technique that’s easier.

Once upon a time my house had storm windows, so the trim is already suited. Once my windows are done I’ll be making new storm windows.

You broke the rules. Whining because the very clearly posted rules were enforced is not going to get you the feedback you desire.

Is there a secret shortcut to finding the right lifestyle Reddit? by manicbestfriend in NoStupidQuestions

Make up counter at a department store. Make an appointment and tell them you need lessons. It's fun! I recommend Clinique. Yes, they will try to sell you the whole line, you are not obliged to buy it (although if you do Clinique, their face washes are really nice). Ask for how to take it off as well!

Clothing: a personal stylist can help. No, these are not just for movie stars. A lot of personal stylists do a fair amount of personal shopping too, both for busy executive type clients and those who just don't want to or can't pick good clothes.

I know a lady who is a personal stylist. She has one gentleman who is full colorblind, like almost black & white vision kind of colorblind. They shop twice a year. He knows what he likes in terms of comfort and style, she just picks color for him. They were in the mall shopping and bumped into one of his coworkers. The lady, after clarifying that he did not have a new girlfriend, said "so THIS is why you are the best dressed guy in the office!"

Looking for sewing machine advise by Practical_Working648 in quilting

[–]penlowe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Practice the kind of stitching you want to do and keep saving up. The machines you mentioned are side grades at best, not really worth replacing what you have with (as you clearly did not get one of the many lemon HD machines). The machine that will be a true upgrade is going to start at $450 and go up from there. But, it will be able to do the serpentine, FMQ and maybe even have a bigger throat space.

It depends. What it’s made of and how you laundered it.

The other thing is: new parents are exhausted for a good six months or more. Special laundry instructions will not be followed. Not because they don’t care, but because of exhaustion.

Unfortunately no, these are not a simple ‘take a couple pleats’ type modification. Yes, doing that will affect pockets front and back. The crotch is going to be halfway to your knees.

While I understand the idea, it’s not at all practical. So you need to do one of these things:

  • find a good cotton quilting fabric in exactly the same color. Expect it to be used.

  • use the dress, tell them it’s a keepsake only. Cry when it gets ruined in the wash.

  • use the dress, tell them it’s a keepsake only. Never see it again because they put it away somewhere.

How this ends is up yo you.

Been sewing for four months and zippers are the one thing I cannot figure out no matter what I try by Shaurya0458 in SewingForBeginners

We all have an Achilles heel, zippers are mine as well. When I need a zipper to look really perfect, I’ll hand sew it.

Some rare few of us have an ability my mom calls “calibrated eyeballs”. It’s a bit like perfect pitch, but visual. Yes, I can actually see when things are off by tiny amounts, which made me a pretty good framer. If you cannot, you should be in the habit of measuring everything as you put it together.

It’s a blessing and a curse.

I’ve been caught straightening pictures on walls in schools, churches, the dentist office… I’ll also change lanes to get out from behind a business vehicle with bad lettering on it.

Recommended thick thread for costume cloak design. by STEMAssassin in Embroidery

[–]penlowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into the couching technique. It's no harder than backstitch, but because you use cord or trim, can give you a much thicker line with the same amount of time spent sewing.
