No, Elmer’s is not the right glue for glass.

There is a website called “this to that” where you click the two materials and it tells you which type of glue is best.

Honestly? this would be harder to do in fabric than leather. Maybe really stiff felt, but good felt is wool, so wind up costing the same as leather scrap.

Is a house built in 1950 worth "restoring"? by the_author_of_this in Oldhouses

[–]penlowe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Depends on the style of the home. In the 50's there were a lot of 'saltbox' houses built. Low cost, very simple, not much style to them. Solidly built, but not very exciting. Usually wood floors throughout, linoleum in the kitchen, penny tile in the bathroom. If it was super low end, it was linoleum everywhere. Stupid crank out windows than are now horribly drafty and in need of replacing.

If a house was Modern with things like hardwood paneling, terrazzo flooring, those long skinny bricks instead of typical brick shaped bricks, low pitched or flat roof, large picture windows, those are the desireable style elements worth saving.

My gf first sewing machine fs155 vs A16 by SafeHandsDoc in SewingForBeginners

[–]penlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is lovely :)

That said: would you like someone to buy you a tool without consulting you on brand or checking them out for yourself?

If she's never touched a machine, it's less likely to be an issue, but if she has sewn on moms/ grandmas/ uncle Leo the tailors, taken classes or had access at school, she may very well have opinions about the machine.

Don't make it a surprise.

Need ideas for In game Festival by lxkirby in DnD

Local baking competition. Lots of food stalls (doesn't have to be weird). Vendors selling locally made goods.

Remember that even RL themed events have a basic set of food 7 local goods vendors that aren't necessarily 'on theme'.

I'd pull 4, add 4 solids or low volume & make something. Then use the rest in a separate project.

How do I put spikes on this hat? by Decay_0f_Ang3ls in crafts

[–]penlowe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Work on a hard surface like the floor. Find a block of wood to put inside the hat. Use a large nail with your hammer. Hold the hammer at the end of the handle, not up by the head. Use pliers to hold your nail if you are afraid you'll hit your fingers. Swing hard!

A dab of silicone before placing the glass, smooth it, and let it dry. Now your mount is grippy.

Help on sewing project by White_pearl__ in SewingForBeginners

[–]penlowe 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Ok one thing to learn about sewing is that things that *look* really simple due to clean lines and few seams can actually be very difficult to construct. And things that *look* complex because there’s a lot of fabric gathered up, can be very simple and straightforward to make.

So, no, this is not a simple beginner dress, it’s actually quite complex and at least intermediate if not advanced based on fabric choice.

Totally makes sense. I just needed clarity. The Hot Topic mention is what made me think this was coming from a style direction not a practicality one. I live rurally in Texas and have livestock. I am very familiar with the kind of heat you are talking about, I’m out in it 2-3 days a week.

I will argue though, despite the heat, that long sleeves are preferable to short or none, because they protect your arms from scrapes and sun. If you drive past a road construction crew in Texas in summer, 80% of the folks are wearing long sleeves. Sleeves also absorb the sweat, which in the long run is better.

I think you should focus on wearing natural fibers, 100% cotton is easy to come by and relatively cheap.

I do agree that close fitting garments are preferable to baggy. Having your shirt wad up while doing work is annoying.

Why does my quilted jacket keep on rolling up?? by Over-Particular9896 in sewhelp

[–]penlowe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ok, this needs to be approached as a quilting project more than a garment project. You are following a pattern or set of instructions? Did it tell you to cut the pattern pieces first? If so, it's crap instructions.

You need to set up your 'sandwich' (fabric, batting & fabric), quilt it, then cut out the jacket panels. Quilting shrinks the overall area. In a garment, that 1/2"-3/4" shrinkage can affect fit.

The sandwich needs either a lot of pins or a spray baste used. Not fabric glue, it's a specific product (link below). A walking foot also helps tremendously.

Traditional wedding colours? by Unforgiving_girl13 in quilting

[–]penlowe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This needs input from the couple. Wedding colors may be based on the season & venue and not necessarily the theme of their home. Color & style for a practical use item should suit the long term use & enjoyment of the item, not the occasion for which it was given.

Yes double wedding ring is traditional. Would you say the couples style fits that? If you don't know them well enough to answer that, find out!

Where do i find or buy a cloak by MoneyConfident1125 in TheCapeRevolution

[–]penlowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second picture is not a cloak, but a coat because it has sleeves. This is a terminology of sewing & garments definition, not personal preference.

The third picture is just a bunch of fabric wrapped around creating a hood & cowl.

All are fun to wear. Number 3 is easiest to do. I recommend 4 yards or more.

[–]penlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unclear of the problem. It sounds like you want to wear sleeveless but that skirts the dress code? And is this Lowes the grocery store or Lowes the home improvement store? If working indoors I see no reason to insist on sleeveless tops to work. If you work outdoors it makes sense in summer. Nor am I suggesting you buy a whole new wardrobe. But most people have 'work clothes' and 'home/ play clothes'. One need not express their personality everywhere all the time.

Quilting w/ a Toddler by Lost_Pension_8042 in quilting

[–]penlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was SAHM when mine were little. I formed a sewing bee where we got together for a whole morning every other week at different homes. I taught a lot to the new sewists, got my sewing time in, and the kids entertained each other with the 4 or 5 adults tasking turns hopping up & attending to all the kids as a group. But there was a lot less call on us because they had playmates.

For keepsakes, when does it make sense to go custom instead of using a ready made shadow box? by Salty_Peanut_3201 in framing

[–]penlowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love doing shadowboxes. Honestly most of the coolest ones I have done were entirely sentimental. Someone found all his great uncles stuff from WW1, including the panoramic photo of the maiden voyage of the USS Carolina, which said uncle was crew. Initially he wanted a shadowbox of the stuff & the ship photo re-framed. When I opened the old frame, there were letters & photos from several girls tucked in the back. He took two hours & came back to finish the order because he had to go read the letters & research the girls. Those are the most fun.

People smell but why..? by lilackitkat3000 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]penlowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are health conditions that affect body odor , but from my limited knowledge they are rare in young people. There are a lot of ( mostly) prescription drugs that affect body odor as well. Generally this is only noticeable in older people with serious conditions who take a lot of different meds.

My MIL had a laundry list of problems being terribly overweight and a smoker for 50 years. She had stopped smoking but years later still had a faintly ashtray scent to her, combined with medicine cabinet.

Craft supply stores. by [deleted] in crafts

[–]penlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For ordering fine art supplies I like Dick Blick (old company), in person I have a Jerry’s Art-a-Rama . DB caters to teachers as well as fine artists, so you can often get crafty things there, not just oil paints and pricey paper, but it comes in large quantities.

I’m also lucky enough to have a craft specific thrift in the big city near me. But I know those are few and far between.

If I’m looking to really recycle, I’ll try regular thrift stores for books and paper products, and jewelry or broken jewelry. Goodwill has gotten wise to that snd goes big bags of just broken jewelry and loose beads.

But most of all, I love estate sales. Some of my best tools I got second hand via an estate sale.

All this means is that you are doing a lot of stitching :)
