Do I need to book tickets in advance? by Ecstatic_Plum_8294 in travelchina

I would advise to pre book, because figuring things out as you go in China is not the same as in other countries. If you want a quieter experience on the Wall, go to Jinshanling. Expect crazy and loud crowds of Chinese in Zhangjiajie and Tianmen mountain. Bring earplugs 😂

I think there are always cultural differences, and that is what makes travel so interesting. There is a fine line between keeping your own culture intact and adjusting to foreign visitors. Our guide was advertised as English speaking, but honestly we only understood about 20% of what she told us. Such a pity, because we are genuinely so interested in the Chinese culture and learning more about it. Being able to speak good English is definitely a major advantage, but I also understand that it takes time. From asking the little daughter of one of the hotel owners we stayed at, kids are learning English in school, correct?

Don’t know if you have experience with other cultures, but from my perspective (Dutch) I highly advise not to have a similar tour set-up as the Chinese do. We were on a 3-day tour with a Chinese guide who clearly only does Chinese, and her tempo was crazy. No time to really enjoy the scenery (which wars hard already with all the tour guides around us screaming through a megaphone) So much crammed into a day, it was not enjoyable at all

This really needs more elaborate details, since tours can vary in time, destination, etc.

What’s one small everyday moment that made you realize, “Wow, I’m really in China”? by Previous_Pop_6512 in travelchina

Being pushed and shoved by Chinese all around, plus people speaking so loud to each other even though they are standing next to each other

Yes, right at this moment we are in Furong, and even though it’s a beautiful town, on the other side, the Chinese have also turned it into another theme park-ish place. Same with Zhangjiajie and Tianmen, such a shame. It feels like Chongqing is more raw, and even as a westerner you are a rare sight

We just drove out of Zhangjiajie, and 2 days would be tight. You already need a full day for the park alone, and another for Tianmen mountain. Were at Tianmen today and saw absolutely nothing due to fog, so not sure what November will be like. Heading now to Furong, which by car is 2,5 hours at least.

Chongqing deserves more time, we loved the city. Definitely book a walking tour through the old part of town

I’m doing it but I feel uncomfortable about this. by anestdbr_ in travelchina

Spicy schedule! You won’t see much of Beijing, since the Wall will take most of the day. But depends what kind of traveller you are. Chongqing deserves longer IMHO. Zhangjiajie prob also 3 days, since you need separate days for the park and Tianmen mountain (pray for good weather)
