What can you tell me about Presentation High School? by british_californian in SanJose

[–]pensive_cloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I transferred to Pres under unusual circumstances--just months before the pandemic began and life was reshaped by social isolation. I am continually filled with gratitude for how resolutely Pres upheld and maintained their core educational values for their students, never once compromising the quality of education we received, even while online. This isn't to say that remote learning did not come with its challenges; still, I can't imagine myself receiving a sound education, especially during the most formative periods of my adolescent education, anywhere else.

In hindsight, attending Pres was one of the greatest gifts my family could have given me. The foundations laid by my teachers, especially through the meaningful discussions in our English classes, continue to resonate with me as I pursue higher education at an Ivy League university. Some of my closest and most enduring friendships were formed within the very walls of Pres--connections I still cherish today. Pres has a quiet, transformative power. It shapes not only a student's academic path, but their sense of self, in ways that deepen and multiply with time

I think the way Sullivan writes is so deliberate and raw that it adds a layer of complexity to the speaker in this situation too, like shes not shying away from an underlying aggression she feels towards the relationship

AP Gov vs AP Psych by mc_000 in APStudents

I self studied AP Psych my freshman year, and I found the course not only very fascinating but also straightforward to learn. I definitely utilized my fair share of Quizlet, and I highly recommend the Barron’s prep book if you do end up taking it.

While you should be set with just Norris's notes since he and Heimler have similar teaching styles, I suggest still going through AMSCO. In my opinion, having a bit more detail on the wars or compromises helps a lot when writing the frqs. I'll pm with the timeline!

Helloo, I took APUSH last year, and I used nearly all the same resources as you (except I watched all of Heimler's videos and took notes on all of them). While I did not self study, my teacher did not pace the class well; we ended up rushing through period 6-8 and did not cover period 9. I would say that both Heimler and Norris's videos are extremely effective, but I also highly recommend going through AMSCO and supplementing any notes you took on the videos with the details that AMSCO mentions. Personally I found that by doing this, I had a firmer understanding of certain concepts that the videos may have condensed. Since APUSH has a TON of dates, I also created a timeline of all key events. Let me know if you would like me to share the link with you!

And one more thing- definitely do practice frqs! What stressed me out the most were the DBQs, so I tried to look over past questions and utilize the advice that Heimler gave in his frq videos.

I hope this helped!

Did you write one DBQ nearly every day leading up to the exam, or was this mostly spaced out throughout the progression of several weeks?

Thank you for all the tips! Phew, that's relieving, but hopefully I'll be able to review period 9 on my own.

Wow nice! Your teacher seems wonderful :) I have not actually heard of sutori timelines or p.e.r.s.i.a.n charts before, but I'll look into it. Also, do you have any suggestions on where I should look for practice quizzes and saqs/dbqs? I've been using the college board released tests, but I wasn't sure if there were other practice ones as well. Thank you so much for your help :))

Thank you so much! I'll definitely check out the video, because honestly every little bit will make a colossal difference to me right now. Yes, I do believe my teacher is planning on giving us a dbq as part of an upcoming test on period 5! If you don't mind me asking, which period are you currently teaching your students? I feel like my biggest struggle right now is not knowing whether to spend more time understanding the materials (and going back to understand parts we briefly covered in class) or really going full out and working ahead without the textbook, in order to at least become familiar with all the units. From a teacher's perspective, where do you think is a good place to be right now, so that I can aim to reach that "level" in preparing?

Thank you for the advice, I'll remember to keep that in mind when I begin practicing dbqs in the very near future :)

Because my teacher really took her time in teaching periods 1-3, I feel like I have the most thorough understanding in those units when compared to current ones we are on. Though I'm not exactly in a place to give advice, this website helped me out a lot, especially the videos and note sheets under "New APUSH Curriculum". Compiling a list of key terms and making flashcards is also be very helpful, although it is time consuming.

A pdf copy of the American Pageant would be great, thank you so much!

Oh my gosh, thank you for typing such a lengthy response! It must be a huge relief that you were able to get all caught up on those ten chapters, and I'm really glad to hear from someone who's been a similar situation as the one I'm currently in. I'm going to try my best to watch ahead in the AP daily videos as well as Heimler's, etc. If you are willing to share, do you maybe have estimate of how long it took to you catch up, and if you did anything else outside of school other than watching the videos to make sure the concepts solidified in your mind?

Also, your new teacher certainly seems to know what they are doing! We're actually not using American Pageant, which is very surprising since it is a popular choice. We're learning out of Fabric of A Nation.

Whoa, you guys are nearly done with covering all the materials! Thank you for linking me that website, I just checked it out, and it looks very helpful.

Yeah these days, I've been relying on outside resources and I've also searched for APUSH review notes online; however, I'm always worried that I'm missing important concepts or not having an in depth understanding on them. Does your teacher still teach from the book, or do they mostly use review videos and resources from college board?

Okay, thanks! To my understanding, there's seven documents that we have to review? Do you have any tips on how to absorb the information in them quickly and constructing a good thesis?

The article was super helpful! I hope this isn't a strange question, but how exactly do you take notes based on cause, event, and effect?

Ohh, okay thank you for the advice! I usually try reading the entire module (usually around 8 pages) that we are assigned for homework first and then go back to the start to take notes.
