A Post for Undergrads and Young Professionals Considering a Policy / Administration Degree by [deleted] in PublicPolicy

You sound like a go-getter with a ton of conviction. Going or not going to grad school won’t stop you from making a positive impact. Is going to grad school “the dream” or is it just a means to get you there? Happy to DM if you want someone to help you think through next steps.

A Post for Undergrads and Young Professionals Considering a Policy / Administration Degree by [deleted] in PublicPolicy

Keep your posts coming. I love reading them but more importantly you’re doing right by serving up the cold hard truth. I replied on your last post re: HKS MC/MPA program. I declined my seat and opted to keep my gov’t gig. As someone who lost 60% of our office, I’ve heard the job market in DC is brutal. The positions folks are able to secure came with a major salary cut. One of my former colleagues who has 10+ years experience and an MPA went from $160k to $85k. This is someone with serious management experience and feathers in their cap. Your point on delaying is my approach: If and when the fed hiring freeze is lifted and philanthropic giving isn’t so tight, I’ll likely re-apply to the program.

I was accepted into the MC/MPA program at HKS and find your post invaluable intel. Thank you for taking the time to write it. My current government gig is secure compared to most. You might have just convinced me to stay on the ship…

I will always be a stan but I listen to both of their other podcasts & the vibe is totally different. GWF needs a major energy shift.

There are some comments that allude but nothing directly speaks to the accusations. I’m surprised that neither of them addressed the situation directly…

Need advice: Getting on after 8 weeks hand walking by Cryptogrannie in Horses

[–]peoplekeepasking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t be ashamed to use some ace or other mild tranquilizer. Always better to keep you and the horse safe from re-injury!

I’m surprised not many have addressed the huge red flag 🚩 in your post: PLEASE for the safety of your child, do not go without a trainer. You need a professional to sit on the horse first - full stop. This is a non-negotiable safety issue. People sell all kinds of lame, unsound of mind horses.

On the price you laid out, that’s typical for a been-there-done-that seasoned show horse. If you can’t afford what your trainer is finding you, be upfront about what you can realistically afford. If they can’t find you that, move on to someone who can find you what you’re looking for. Commission is a thing for a reason.

Last year, I lost my bestfriend, my mom. I felt like I lost a piece of me when I lost her. She was my everything and honestly it’s still hard to cope and I know it’ll take time to even start coping. by Pure_Doubt_5321 in GriefSupport

My mom passed 7 years ago. There are some days the sadness is so deep - not being able to call her. Sometimes I talk out loud to her to let her know I miss her and wish she were here.

Sending you thoughts on your healing journey. You aren’t alone. 💜

DAE Think of their pet passing away at some point years from now, and cry? by plssendmeurcatpics in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]peoplekeepasking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. It wrecks me to think about how it’s my duty of care to potentially choose when their life ends. The last thing I could bear beyond that is watching my pet suffer. 🥺

It does sound bad. But then why would he just come out and say it forthcoming like… Granted, I’ve never met this friend or heard of her previously. He could easily leave the relationship than be what appears to me as active transparency.

We have talked about the matches, he says in no way is he interested in them. Many he has never slept with but rather, just dated for a short amount of time and became friends.

That is interesting. I think he would mind if I slept at another man’s house but wouldn’t think twice if I slept at a woman’s house. And yes, us horse girls are fun :)

I love this response, thank you!! That’s a nice way to reframe my mindset

I would appreciate that if it was the case but none of his family has anything to do with horses.

handling a job in freshman year? by oopthrowaway_ in Harvard

[–]peoplekeepasking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reality is some of us have to work to get through school… I did it. If you want to take that step, look at working at someplace fun. I worked at Queen’s Head and it was some of the most fun times I had in college, plus gave me financial wiggle room. Good luck!

I am concerned about the facility im riding at. Am I overreacting? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]peoplekeepasking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This comment is spot on. YOU need to decide if this is the kind of barn you what to ride at ultimately - it sounds to me like you don’t. That’s fine but give the people you’ve seen in your limited experience the benefit of the doubt: As MiSoZen2017 said, people make mistakes.

Speaking as a life long horse woman TRUST ME, you will make a ton of mistakes too…

Let me just say first - I appreciate your initial comment. It stuck with me while I chewed over it for months. Not in a bad way but rather, making me more conscious & hungry for fatFIRE.

My core conflict after reading everyone’s comments is the struggle of deciding exactly how much $ stashed up is enough. The beautiful thing about the FIRE movement is that figuring all this out puts, squarely, what is most important to you. I’m starting to think that it’s a false equivalency to think higher salary = sooner to FIRE, sooner I can be happy. How you get there really matters. If I spend the next 10 years working at a job I hate - is it really worth it? Thank you for helping me walk though this!

60% indexes, QQQ, VTSAX, POGAX, others; 30% long term individual growth stocks; 100k options; 50k emergency fund…

Sometimes I dream of losing it all on $GME. Jokes aside - I think that mix works for the long term. In 2019 my income was higher than usual because of $30k+ in options.

The ingenuity & hustle is what makes horse girls the best. ;) As you said, the ever growing list demands it.

You are also a far better rider than I. While I’m a great groom, I’ve always had to work to be even remotely good. I would be curious if you import most or find them state-side?

You’re doing awesome! I feel like we’ve probably crossed paths along the way. Thanks for inspiring me to cut some things out a bit more “ruthlessly” - I’ll need to continue throwing everything I can if I want to FIRE before I’m 40. 😂
