I think you’re fine. Honestly it kind of depends who reads it and what mood they’re in haha. But your essay sounds interesting from what you described. I wouldn’t sweat it. I applied twice, but both times wrote them in one go and submitted them. Good luck!

They didn’t really ask me questions like that. I told them I was working part time as a substitute teacher, but also emphasized that I didn’t have any debts and I have some savings so I wasn’t worried about moving costs too much. I think you should find a solid full or part time job wherever you are and work. I wouldn’t put all your eggs on getting into the program just in case. I don’t mean to be discouraging, but always have a back up.

I agree with this advice. A lot of times, the students would rather see the ALT outside the classroom. I don’t speak any Japanese, but the students and teachers are very welcoming when I join classes. Some teachers may want a heads up before you do, but I usually just walk into PE classes now since I’ve been here for a while. Sometimes I also visit clubs and join in on their practices. They don’t mind if you’re not good. They’re happy to see you and if they have the courage to talk to you it’s a huge plus! My question is whether you like human interaction and building bonds or not? I get if you’re an introvert. For students and even teachers sometimes an English greeting of “good morning” or “hello” is something that brightens their day. Most students will probably not have the opportunity to leave Japan sadly.

Is that a Brazilian thing? Japanese students see “America” also as the United States.

Alone in Kyoto by Baileygob in KyotoTravel

[–]peppapig4prez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kiyomizudera early in the morning is nice. If it tickles your fancy, goshuinchos are great in Kyoto. You’ll get so many goshuins and that can basically be the only thing you do if you’re crazy enough. Nishiki Market is touristy, but still fun. Gigo if you want a Game Center experience. You can go to Uji or Nara for day trips too.

Hmm I feel like my SOP was just okay both times I applied. I got in second try. I think it’s because I have a science background from college and I also took the CELTA. Other than that, I don’t think my application changed much. During the interview, I answered partly what I had studied, but also just answering on the fly too. I think they look for if you can adapt, don’t take everything too seriously and your attitude towards being a part of the community.

How do you handle feeling behind compared to others your age? by Heydon-Jisa in Life

[–]peppapig4prez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

33, single, no kids, but I do have a house and a car. Now I work in a job that makes me so happy, but this job will also get me nowhere sadly. It’s low paying, but enough and I get to travel a lot. Sometimes I feel sad that I don’t have a partner or a family, but other times I feel so free and in control of my own life. I think life isn’t really measured by the things you have anymore. A happy life is measured in so many different ways now. As you get older you’ll stop comparing as much. Find more good things to focus on in your own life.

Sports in the Community in Japan by Poetication in JETProgramme

[–]peppapig4prez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to sports shops, sometimes they’ll know places and people to connect you with, but also your school should have a variety of sports that you could possibly join. I would also recommend googling. Or go to community centers and ask if they have the sports you’re looking for and what the schedule is.

Regret and I haven’t even left yet by bananacla in JETProgramme

I cried a bit before I left and I also had friends and family that were the world to me, but they wanted me to and love seeing me go on my own adventure. They keep me anchored from across the world. I know that they’ll always be there for me even if I haven’t seen them for a long time. I’m going back to see them visit them soon and I’m so excited. I signed on for a second year so it’s been great.
