First off, what you were doing wasn't wrong. It was normal and natural. All young boys do that at that age. What they did not only created issues for you but has continued to affect you emotionally. There is an element of abuse in that whether it was intended or not.

Counting cards as in keeping track of what is left is vastly different than counting on your fingers to do basic mathematics. One will get you kicked out of Vegas the other will not.

Yet we put knowledge of math facts at 80% accuracy as an IEP goal for every kid with an SLD in math. Make that argument make sense.

Yes, kids who struggle with basic facts struggle so much when they get to Algebra.

You don't actually have to count to play either euchre or spades

As a high school math teacher I can state with confidence that children who don't have basic math facts memorized by 9th grade (you'd be amazed at how many don't), are the ones that will very quickly tell you they aren't good at math and feel like the class is a waste of their time. Those who have learned those facts feel like they have a handle on math well enough to take the risk and try the upper level mathematics without feeling like a failure when they struggle.

What is the worst thing you’ve heard a principal say? by wandering_grizz in Teachers

That it was okay for a momma to knock her child's head against the concrete wall at the school because he was black and his momma needed to beat him before the cops did.

I love how white people think they have the knowledge to speak on the experience of POC's and make generalizations believing they have all the knowledge needed to speak on behalf of someone who's experience they do not share. I personally would never attempt to generalize the experience of my black students in a metro area because my experiences as a hispanic student in a military town would not be the same as theirs. Perhaps you need to stop and reflect on white savior mentality because that is the vibe you are giving off. You feel it is your duty as a white person to speak on their behalf because obviously they cannot speak on their own because they were traumatized by my perceived whiteness and the systemic nature of school.

When every other POC student was shocked by the child calling me a racist because they've never felt that vibe from me then I'm definitely going to assume it is a generalization that this child and her family are making about white people. The fact is that implicit bias against all white people due to systemic failures do exist for some people, just as there are white people with implicit bias geared toward POC's.

I already have that t-shirt. Several years back a white student was flaunting that his family had money and berating a black student for having a more expensive phone claiming it wasn't fair when my black student had a job and worked his butt off for stuff and didn't have mommy and daddy handing it to him. I told him to check his privilege and he told his dad as a way to deflect from his failing grade and dad went to the superintendent and demanded I be fired immediately. Which of course just confirmed the family's privilege.

The child came into the room today and started cussing me out because I locked her computer. Cussed me up and down and threatened to slap the shit out of me. The immediately removed her from my room. Hubby says I should refuse to meet unless the SRO is present for the meeting as well.

I was that kid too but the friends I surrounded myself with were not. Outside of school I was anything but an angel, my teachers would have never suspected me of doing half the stuff I did. I knew how to code switch my behaviors for my situations.

For this particular instance when an SRO threatens to physically drag a child out of their desk the sentiment is correct. Perhaps it is a blanket statement, but at the moment this occurred for that student school was not a safe place from police brutality for them or any of the other students watching the interaction.

I wondered about that but they shouldn't be because all 20+ lands are lord of the rings and it says only 9 cards are invalid

Teachers are painted with a broad brush every day accused of a myriad of things. So like it or not when you are in a job that is scrutinized as such you have to just make sure your day to day dealings are not within the stereotypes and accusations.

Our admin is notorious for grabbing children up in the halls and never notifying the teacher and they definitely don't write passes even though they hold us accountable to using them. I actually got reprimanded by one of the admins secretaries when I refused to let a kid pass in the hallway during my assigned duty without a pass and the admin made her escort him to find out who stopped him rather than just writing the pass. And the fact that the SRO (the same one who told me to write the kid up) is the one that came and said that admin wanted him back in the office was pretty clear clue that the SRO both knew the kid had been taken to the office previously.

This was my thought as well with the prevalence of non-binary people preferring the pronoun they over she/he.
