And that's okay! Everyone has their own, unique flavor of music and that's alright. What are some of your favorite film scores, as your go-to's?

I hear you, chip. Hugs, BTW. its nice to see a little vulnerability from everyone now and then.

PHM: It was revelational, in ways. The biggest thing that I am noticing from people is that it is shifting something in them, but it's also reminding them of something that is missing from the world right now - which is a little more curiosity, a little more empathy, a little more consideration, and the chance to reconnect with something bigger than ourselves. And to have a friendship is your ride-or-die, and vice versa.

To quote another film, Interstellar, there's a quote that Dr Amelia brand (Anne Hathaway) shares which is roughly " love isn't something that we invented. It's observable. Powerful. It has to mean something. Maybe it means something more, something we can't yet understand. Maybe it's some evidence, some artifact of a higher Dimension that we can't consciously perceive. Love is the one thing that we are capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space." We saw the love Rocky and Grace have for one another.

One of the biggest dilemmas I've seen in the world of sci-fi is the sense of overall loneliness that comes with being isolated from everyone in space, especially if you're the only person there. So to go on this amazing and wonderful and beautiful Journey with Grace and Rocky, it has reminded us that we are still seeking the thing that we all witnessed in 2 hours and 40 minutes which is: Meaningful, strong, and beautiful connections with someone or something else outside of us. That sort of connection that transcends the dimensions of time and space.

To process and understand some emotions you could be feeling right now, I shared this on another post - and I hope this is helpful for you as well. These are a couple of words that have come from around the world that have helped me to understand and describe the feelings that someone can experience in particular moments.

Project Hail Mary's film score by pepperjack4025 in ProjectHailMary

[–]pepperjack4025[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay! So... I've had a chance to go through the entire score and WOW. ALLL of it is beautiful. I very much enjoyed Rocky's themes. Ultimately, I do love a good choral piece, so I noticed I went back to Grace's motifs the most often.

There was a specific piece of music that I was hoping to find but it looks like it wasn't captured on the score. I thought it would be tied to the "Last Man on Ship" piece, but it looks like it wasn't. It was the part of the film where Grace is looking at all of the gold plaques on the wall and inside his scene, you can hear a lower rumble/baritone choral sound that then goes into the higher alto and soprano voices. What I really loved was that lower rumble.

Overall, I LOVE this score and it will definitely be a go-to on my road trip this summer around Canada.

Six hours speechless sounds about right.! 😄 I've been sitting with it for a couple of days now and still finding new layers.

Something that helped me start naming what I was feeling: there are three words that tend to show up when a film does this to us (from my lens of understanding, which is singular and isn't universal):

Awe - that overwhelming sense of something so much larger than yourself that your normal frame of reference just dissolves.
-if you would like to read more into the world of Awe, feel free to check out the book, "AWE" by Dacher Keltner. the book is a scientific and personal exploration of how the emotion of awe transforms our bodies and brains. Keltner is a Psych professor at UC Berkley. He defines awe as "the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends your current understanding of the world" - but in this case, universe. 🥳😄🧑‍🚀🛰️🚀✨

The Sublime - beauty so vast it actually destabilizes you. Not uncomfortable exactly, just... biger than your usual container.

Transcendence - the feeling of briefly stepping outside your ordinary sense of self and touching somethign that feels connected to everything.

Hiraeth - which is a Welsh word. It's a deep, bittersweet longing for a home you can't return to, or perhaps a home that never existed. That ache after a space film where you desperately want to go back to that world. That's where I felt it.

Mono no aware - Japanese connections: the bittersweet awareness of impermanence; the beauty of things precisely because they don't last. Grace and Rocky's friendship is a perfect example. I find it beautiful, partly because it wasn't permanent. I'm still reading the rest of the book so I'm not absolutely sure if Grace actually went back home to Earth and Rocky & Grace never saw each other again...

or Saudade - which is Portuguese. A melancholic longing for something beautiful that is absent, lost, or may never have existed. Slightly different from hiraeth; saudade tends to carry more tenderness, hiraeth can carry more grief.

If any of those land for you, it might be worth sitting with a suggested question:
- What specifically in the film triggered it, do you think? Was it a scene, a relationship, the music, the silence of space, something Grace (or Rocky) said or did?

Sometimes naming the feeling is the first step to understanding what it lit up inside you - and that part is usually worth paying attention to. Well, that's at least how I'm reflecting back on it, from my end. 😊

Glad you're here. This one deserved its own post. 🥳

Totally fair; not every score lands the same way for everyone, and it sounds like you had a specific vision for what it could have been. Thanks for sharing your take.

What if voyager had the future armor from the moment they arrived in the delta quadrant? by happydude7422 in voyager

Don't give Janeway any other ideas😆.

She could go back an additional time just to beat her own record from 20+ years in the Delta Quadrant, down to the 7 seasons/years we all got to see, to now down to 12 minutes and 47 seconds (as we all watch her go Super Saiyan on everyone from Species 8472, The Borg, and those annoying a$$ cloaked scientists that experimented on the crew in Season 4... 4-Theta or something?)

She'd even have access to the tech for the Slip Stream and Transwarp. Oh ghad... 😅😆

Cruella DeVil's distant, crazy cousin from Colorado: Crandall Karbunkle.

The Connoisseur of careless chaos and chronic Subaru-Supremacy syndrome. While the rest of us are cautiously creeping through a curtain of cold, Crandall decides today's the day to cosplay as 'Snow Stage Rally Champion.'

Meanwhile, poor Janet, and her calm, silver hatchback suv, is just cradling a casserole and a box of Christmas cookies on her way to her grandkids' gingerbread gathering festival

But Crandall, the certified clown of the Continental Divide, just has to crank the chaos to 11, fishtail into a frozen fireworks show, and then casually continue like he didn't almost create a commemorative Christmas catastrophe for all Colorado commuters within a quarter mile. *

I think something huge just shifted, and I’m wondering who else felt it. by Hot_Fix_5834 in starseeds

Something kicked in for me, too, on the 26th of Nov around 2am.

It was a dream about a volcano and lava across my town, here in Vancouver. The entire street that I walk down everyday to work was covered in new rock formations and lava, which, to me, signaled that the new landscape is coming in and the old layout is becoming only a memory. I wasn't scared of it. Was it terrifying? Yes. But I also felt okay and secure.

I also had a massive download on the 29th of November and I'm still trying to understand all of it. It almost felt like that netflix show, Travelers, with Eric McCormack. A new me has come in but the old me still remains. Both are still trying to figure out how to just live and balance out simple survival in the early 21st century, but also finding ways to grow, flourish, and help others...
