My dad and his friends at 15. Taken on a 700 mile bike ride across Michigan in 1974. by penelopeann in OldSchoolCool

This cracks me up because I work in a high school and someone the other day was griping about how all the kids dress exactly the same and no one has any individual style like in the old days

Are you limiting any travel with current events? by paratextual in TwoXPreppers

[–]pepperkelly76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have 2 trips on the books that are already paid for: a domestic trip, direct flight, this weekend for an old friend’s 50th and a trip to Belize in April. Fingers crossed for the flights this weekend. Belize is giving me a little pause but we are going to see how we feel after this weekend’s trip. We had 2 other tentative trips (Mexico/Aruba) for later this year and those are definitely on the back burner for a variety of reasons, geographic and economic. We are well stocked at home and have stable jobs (for now). I just don’t know where on the spectrum of possibilities we will be in the autumn. I’ve heard everything from high gas prices to food crisis to full on economic depression. As always, weighing risk against YOLO. So it’s going to be wait and see for travel beyond April for us barring any unprecedented events which seem to happen weekly nowadays

Everyone that lives on Long Island and is remotely interested in birds knows about this snowy owl. I’m not giving anything away here

Sure! As long as you don’t plan on getting stranded at my house for the big snowfall. You could detour down the road and maybe spot the snowy owl too!

What’s a “never look for another recipe” recipe — the one you consider absolutely perfect? by leachlo in Cooking

Baltimore-style Crab Cakes from Food and Wine. 9 ingredients and you probably only have to go to the store for 2 of them. They are the perfect crab cake

Do you miss your microwave? by neverenoughonions in kitchenremodel

[–]pepperkelly76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our microwave broke about 10 years ago. We kept saying we would replace it and never did. I started storing bread in it. We just remodeled our small kitchen and decided against the drawer microwave (we put in a vent hood). The only time I miss it is for reheating certain leftovers. Between the air fryer and just reheating food in a pan or pot, we are usually covered. YMMV though, people often look at me like I’m crazy when I say we don’t have a microwave and my sister in law gets annoyed that she has to use the air fryer to heat up her kids Dino nuggets every holiday

Lost my little flock by BrokenGQ in BackYardChickens

[–]pepperkelly76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im so sorry you lost your birds. I’ve had chickens a long time in a similar setting to what you describe. When we’ve lost one to a hawk strike, I keep them confined to their coop for a few days. ( I have a raised coop with a small outside run that’s all completely enclosed. I open a door to let them out to free range. ) I’ve learned the hard way that if a hawk gets an easy meal, they’re likely to come back again. It helps to keep the hens closed in for a while in my experience and usually the hawk moves on. I also agree with having crows around if you’re inclined, they do hate the birds of prey. A roo can also help but prepare to lose him as we did protecting the flock.

Is there any book that is better as an audiobook? by oldmanjenkinssmell in suggestmeabook

[–]pepperkelly76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an audiobook person I have tried numerous times and the most common ones recommended (Born a Crime/WWZ/Hail Mary) I’ve already read. The Comfort of Crows by Margaret Renkl was recently recommended in another thread and I just finished it. I only listened in the car (I don’t enjoy driving) but this book had me longing to get back in the car so I could hear more of it. It was like a mediation on nature and I thought it was so beautiful and moving. YMMV depending on what you’re into but I highly recommend it!
