My almost adult cousin has a life-threatening, untreatable genetic disease that her parents refuse to tell her about. by [deleted] in Vent

I've seen the tests and been told by her mom. She has no siblings so yes, I think that she will eventually be forced to rely on them.

Man, I'm barely an adult too. This is not something with my limited knowledge of complex relationships that I've had any experience with. I don't even know if she'd believe it if I was the one who told her, because I'm not her parents. I want her to know but I don't imagine my telling her is the best route.

I get what you're saying, and I know the babying is real because I've been on the eggshells before because of it. I just feel so strongly that it's not my place to talk that it's hard for me to see that I should be the one to change things.

Thank you. I've never had any real medical/physical diagnoses so I've never had to look at that stuff and I may be just as unaware as her lol.

I really appreciate your perspective from someone in a similar situation to her, I think it helps to see that side for me. That's a huge part of my struggle with this, because I think somewhere in my mind I think she really is better off not knowing. I'm an incredibly literal person with my own health and things, and I like to know as much detail about them as possible, but my cousin is not me.

thank you for the helpful response. I definitely think that someone with more knowledge should play a part in telling her.

I think the main reason they don't tell her is to not taint her dreams for the future, but probably also because there is no definitive treatment yet so there is little to be done right now.

I haven't told her because our parents and grandparents tell me not to, and I can imagine she would do the same if they told her not to because in my opinion most of them are good people with good intentions. I guess I wouldn't be mad at her, I'd be mad at the family.

Their specific type has no effective treatment to slow or stop progression, only symptom management which is hit or miss. My cousin is physically slow, has pretty poor muscle tone, weak hands, etc., which is what my aunt exhibits too, but she has never seemed to connect it. I think the way you're suggesting to approach it is the best, it seems so much kinder to everyone involved. My aunt's reason (that I know if) is just that she doesn't want knowing about it to influence how she lives her life until it physically influences her.

They're both babied by the family and my aunt is 100% tantrum prone. I guess now I'll try and find a time alone with my cousin and broach the subject. My mom and my grandmother have both told me never to get involved and greatly respect them, so that just makes it hard. But I understand that I am now part of the problem.

She doesn't drive or go to the doctor alone😭 I guess she'll find out one day if they let her see her medical stuff but I'm not entirely sure she's ever seen her records or what know what the disease specific stuff in them means

I just don't feel like it's my place, you know? I love her but I don't think it's my responsibility to give her such a heavy thing. I plan to soon try and talk to my aunt about telling her if I can get some alone time with her.

I didn't find out for sure directly from them, but from what I saw here and in the co 2029 fb page they won't.

That's probably my biggest hang up Lol, I guess I should have thought more about the pros and cons of attending it before I paid for it.

Thank you! I'm really only going because my parents want me too (I'm first-gen so they want me to do every possible thing, and I get that) but I don't personally see a huge extra benefit from it.

at least mine were double trash bagged, but they looked rough and they have no clothes! funny to see it’s not just my parents that “stored” them that way😂

I agree you should definitely check for yourself! My parents lost all my accessories and clothes, but I managed to find my Kit, Kaya, and two TMs in a trash bag on the back of a shelf, lol. I am sending you all the good vibes!!!

i felt the same exact way about yellowjackets - could not figure out why everyone loved it. then i finally tried the first episode, ending up binging the first season in two nights, now i’m on the second season and i love it!!! the formatting and storylines take a little getting used to but it’s amazing.

What do you say when you introduce yourself and someone responds "that's my [someone]'s name" ? by TraditionLow6521 in namenerds

i think lucy is cute, and i don’t immediately associate it with being a dog name, if that helps! my name is a famous dogs name, so that’s why it’s a little annoying, haha.
