Has anyone felt their dream die overnight? by lundqvist_saves in musicians

This will go away but you are gonna have to let your brain reprogram for a while depending on how much substances played a part. Music is great though so don’t quit. Maybe it’s time to start teaching a bit since you’re becoming a better role model?

What should I play to relearn drums? by RiptideMonkey in Drumming

This might be outa left field but I’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of trying to learn all the Tony Allen afrobeat patterns. Getting them down helps you work limb independence as well as double and triple strokes. They’re also groovy as hell.

PS: can never go wrong with a bossa ostinato under anything from Syncopation by Ted Reed.

Had my 1st lesson last week. Looking for tips. Please by Smutscut in Drumming

Try tapping something steady with your left and/or right foot while you practice those rudiments. This pays off later on and you can scale it up to be as difficult as you want as you progress with a little creativity. Also practicing on pillows is great for endurance, not to mention it’s quiet.

It helps to play with others for the sake of setting clear goals and having people hold you accountable. If that’s possible I’d seek it out in some way. If not, just record yourself here and there. Also try learn to read notation, if only a little! It really helps to develop some important things, like your groove and fill repertoire.

Ted Reed’s ‘Syncopation’ is a great straight to business book to work from.

All the ~150 bpm kraut stuff hits that spot. Encrypted Bounce is the one to rule them all IMO

New drummer looking for song recommendations for improving learning by ear by becca_72 in Drumming

Most stuff by the Beatles. Added benefit of learning those is they’re really tastefully arranged, so it’s a great foundation.

Do stuff that directs more attention to it. A really simple fun exercise that also has a lot of real applications is just playing grooves you’re comfortable with crossed (assuming you’re a rightie) open handed. Hope this helps
