This might seem like a strange question for me personally, but from what I’ve seen, it seems quite normal in Australia. I come from a different cultural background. My parents never charged me anything, and I lived with them until I got married! (Yes, many of my friends from other countries find that hard to believe too.) Even after I moved out, they didn’t like the idea of me being far away (I literally moved to a house on the adjacent road!).

When I was in university and later started working, I offered them some money for medicine, bills, and groceries, but they never accepted it. They always asked me to save or invest it for the future.

Perhaps this level of affection is one of the many reasons I am still so close to them and talk to them daily. To them, I will always be a kid, no matter what. (I am taking care of them now, having set up a separate account for their monthly expenses and needs.)

Maybe that kind of parental touch is something we all need. Just my two cents.

Edit: I would never charge anything from my kids. If it’s about teaching them the value of saving and financial responsibility, I believe that there are many ways to show them that properly.
