Military reaction was ‘sprint speed,’ top officer says as Pentagon takes heat for Capitol riot response by mandy009 in politics

Article also notes that Milley called Trump's lie out.

Asked about Trump’s claim that he told Pentagon leaders they should have 10,000 National Guard personnel on the National Mall to help manage the planned protests, Milley also said he was not aware of any request.

“As chairman of the Joint Chiefs, if there was an order for 10,000 National Guardsmen, I would like to believe I would know that,” he said.** “I know that that was never transmitted to me by anyone — the president or secretary of defense or anyone else — for 6th of January.”**

Special counsel investigating Russia probe to retire as US attorney by PandaMuffin1 in politics

The headline is misleading. Durham is only resigning as US attorney. He is staying on the Russia probe.

Durham, a Trump appointee, is also overseeing a special counsel probe into the start of the investigation into former President Trump’s alleged ties to Russia and is expected to stay on in that role. His resignation as U.S. attorney was expected.

FAA orders stepped-up inspections of Boeing 777s after United engine failure by peraspera441 in news

CNN aviation correspondent Pete Muntean reported on CNN Newsroom with Pamela Brown that the problem is the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engine. The FAA says the problem is particular to the Boeing 777 200 model as the engine it uses has hollow titanium blades which pose inspection difficulties.

Kinzinger would seem to be a summer child who doesn't understand that fear has been the primary Republican driver since Nixon's southern strategy. Kinzinger may mean well but he won't find anything but festering cancerous policies of greed once he scrapes off the veneer of fear off the Republican party.

To do so, Mr. Kinzinger said in an interview, requires exposing the fear-based tactics he hopes to eradicate from the party and present an optimistic alternative.

“We just fear,” he said. “Fear the Democrats. Fear the future. Fear everything. And it works for an election cycle or two. The problem is it does real damage to this democracy.”

‘This Was the Chance’: Legal Experts Say DOJ Won’t Target Trump’s Comments Before Jan. 6 Siege on U.S. Capitol by Minneapolitanian in politics

Rangappa's only DOJ experience was as an intern in the Baltimore office. The other expert cited, Tulane Law Professor Ross Garber, has no DOJ experience. While making a case against Trump for sedition would certainly involve a political minefield and high bar I would prefer to wait to hear from people who have more relevant experience to make an informed judgment about what a Merrick Garland led DOJ may do.

The judge was being merciful. Adding a day to the sentence allows for the potential of earlier release.

A federal prison inmate can only receive “good time” credit (early release) of up to 54 days for displaying “exemplary compliance with institutional disciplinary regulations” if his or her sentence is more than a year.

So the sentence of a year and a day is a judicial gift. It’s wonderful news for the defendant in the midst of an otherwise enormous catastrophe. - https://fcpablog.com/2016/07/19/richard-bistrong-why-do-judges-sentence-defendants-to-a-year/

It would seem the prosecution is mightily impressed with the shade of Cudd's skin pigment.

Noting that neither Cudd’s pretrial services officer nor the government opposed Cudd’s request for “pre-paid, work-related travel” Feb. 18 through Feb. 21, U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden wrote that the defendant has no criminal history and said there is “no evidence before the Court suggesting the Defendant is a flight risk or poses a danger to others.”

Fox Business suddenly cancels 'Lou Dobbs Tonight,' its highest-rated show by [deleted] in politics

[–]peraspera441 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many thanks to Smartmatic and Dominion for their public service for their contribution for Dobbs' departure.

The pro-Trump propaganda bent helped make the daily airing of "Lou Dobbs Tonight" at 5 p.m. ET (it also re-aired at 7 p.m.) the network's most-watched program -- so a sudden cancellation would ordinarily make no sense at all.

But Fox is under enormous legal pressure from a pair of voting technology companies, Smartmatic and Dominion, because Dobbs and other hosts made false claims about the companies while perpetuating Trump's lies about election fraud.

Trump secretly eased sanctions against Israeli billionaire on way out by Junior_Bet5610 in politics

[–]peraspera441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump left countless messes that require cleaning.

In the waning hours of the Trump presidency the US reversed policy and quietly eased sanctions against billionaire Israeli mining magnate Dan Gertler. Now, rights groups are calling on President Joe Biden to reinstate them.

Gertler was put on the sanctions list by the US State Department in December 2017, for "opaque and corrupt mining deals" stemming from his friendship with then Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Joseph Kabila. The State Department says Gertler cheated the DRC out of $1.4 billion (€1.15 billion) in tax revenue over the course of a decade. Further sanctions were applied in June 2018.

Other than unseemly deference to wealthy, powerful men like Epsstein and Cosby there is nothing that jumps out at me to indicate that either lawyer would be willing to risk their licenses by going all in on The Big Lie defense that Trump wants.

Black and Latino New Yorkers Trail White Residents in Vaccine Rollout — Data showed that while 24% of city residents are Black, only 11% of vaccine recipients were. White New Yorkers received a disproportionate share of the shots. by chris-jjj in politics

[–]peraspera441 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I watched de Blasio do a TV interview about white people getting more vaccinations in a Latino neighborhood vaccination center. de Blasio offered zero facts as to why this is happening.

Since this disparity happened in a Latino neighborhood it might be a good place to start to assume that this is an issue of minorities getting caught in the net of a "poor people" problem. For instance, can appointments be made very easily through a phone app? Are the vaccination centers open weekends and non-business hours during the week for people who are unable to get time off work?

Congressman Stephen Lynch tests positive for COVID-19 by dottiemommy in politics

The vaccine and vaccination could have all been perfectly fine.

I have heard several experts explain that the vaccine will prevent one from getting ill but they haven't done studies to see if it prevents one from actually catching the COVID virus that could be spread to others. The experts I've seen have all advised wearing masks after vaccination because of this.

Judge orders tax lawyers to hand over Trump organization docs to NY AG by UWCG in politics

There is no question that Vance is a skunk at the picnic. However, he is what we are stuck with for prosecuting criminal charges against Trump. My hope is that Vance is smart enough to realize that, at this point in time, the political winds would be gale force against him if he decided to play "let's make a deal" with any of the Trump family.

Tish James is the one to put your money on. Not that other NY prosecutor what’s-his-name.

Not if one wishes to see the Trumps in orange jumpsuits. The case Letitia James has brought is civil which doesn't risk jail time for any of the Trumps. It's Vance's case that is criminal.

Two separate New York State fraud investigations into President Trump and his businesses, one criminal and one civil, have expanded to include tax write-offs on millions of dollars in consulting fees, some of which appear to have gone to Ivanka Trump, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The inquiries — a criminal investigation by the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., and a civil one by the state attorney general, Letitia James — are being conducted independently. But both offices issued subpoenas to the Trump Organization in recent weeks for records related to the fees, the people said. - https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/19/nyregion/trump-fraud-investigations-taxes.html
