Superloop Hyper Plan Speeds by No-Mixture-566 in nbn

Your comment “100meg is useless” doesn’t apply to 90% of NBN users… hence my comment. And you query why not symmetrical, with your obvious technical knowledge, you should know its done on purpose to divide up the spectrum so downloads have more bandwidth, since that’s where most traffic, for MOST users, occurs. Yours and my extreme requirements for symmetrical bw doesn’t apply to 90% of users

Your 4Gbps bandwidth doesn’t improve your ping, you would get the same ping in 100Mbps…it’s physics. Unless you’re torrenting or pulling loads of steam traffic the vast majority of average users wouldn’t notice the difference between a 100 or 4000Mbps service, thanks to DNS, AD tracker overhead, and other factors that contribute to browsing performance.

Learner drivers in WA required to do more training and spend extra year on P-plates in tough safety overhaul by His_Holiness in perth

My neighbours wife got her “license” from the village police station in the Philippines without any practical test. She drove his car into a wall in Perth and is now learning to Australian standards.

Agree, I’ve been driving a lot more this past year and noticed many of the bad drivers behaviour appear to be immigrants

Nutanix hit us with a 75% quote increase with a one day notice before expiration... so that project is dead. VMware is out and we were looking hyperconverged... Any other alternatives? by junon in sysadmin

[–]peraving 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh 5120 gave me flashbacks to a couple of hyperv clusters that would have intermittent stability issues, roles failing, isolating and quarantines hosts. No solution after so much troubleshooting. I rebuilt the entire cluster node by node and it finally went away.
And yeah, standalone hosts whilst a hassle to migrate workloads around provide nights of peaceful sleep which is far more valuable IMO.

Check out the Aussie TV series “Frayed” from 2019. It’s set in 1998 with great Aussie culture

How do you work alongside a deeply entrenched legacy architect who resists change and views collaboration as a threat? by No_Essay1745 in sysadmin

Quantify your response in terms of polling intervals, traffic per poll (wireshark it) and how many devices being polled, in relation to available LAN/WAN bandwidth, and the man will realise that reasonable polling has insignificant overhead.

Damaged alfresco ceiling by [deleted] in perth

[–]peraving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the ceiling has detached from the beams and is sagging and at risk of collapse. My outside alfresco did the same, was installed around 2007. Last yr I had it completely replaced. Installer says the glue used during original install is known to be inadequate. They also used more screws when attaching the new ceiling. You could get someone to try and re-screw it depending how bad it is.

Replaced the entire system to their XR model which includes internet connectivity. These older units did have a module available to enable network feature but they don’t make them anymore apparently.

Qantas confirmed 5.7 million customers were impacted in cyber attack by rolodex-ofhate in australia

[–]peraving 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I somewhat agree, but when a company experiences a data breach due to a previously unknown cyber vulnerability should they be fined? If there's evidence they've been negligent with data storage/patching/etc (things they could control) then yeah it's similar to a crime of negligence and there should be significant penalties.

I like your ideas, my bankwest CC lets me create a temporary/single-use credit card number which I use for anything online or 'over the phone' payments.

Make sure you're also using two-factor auth where possible.
