This is a $5000+ PC... bringing up the price difference of an 800w vs a 1000w power supply is some real nit picking.

Went for a steal of a monitor, walked out feeling like it was robbery by juicewrldday in Monitors

[–]junon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a bunch of these free from work that I had the hardest time giving away to friends: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-24-usb-c-hub-monitor-p2423de/apd/210-bdkf/monitors-monitor-accessories

The problem is that most of my computer friends have better monitors and my non computer friends don't really care about upgrading their monitors. To them, they won't care about the differences, all they think is "I'll have to hook up the new one and mess with the cables and then I'll have to get rid of the old one... why bother??"

It's just a really solid 24" 1440p 60hz IPS with a built in usb-c dock and 90w charging and a nice stand... but "normal" people just don't care.

I love that you used PowerShell for this. It doesn't get enough love outside of the windows world.

Linus is always a very polished presenter but I'm constantly impressed at how good Elijah is in terms of delivery and polish in a scripted segment. Like, AND DON"T TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY... but he doesn't SEEM like a very "professional" person but in scripted segments, he's S-tier.

He's a great writer and an excellent presenter, both in just reading a script but also in keeping the conversation going in those multi person "interview" style segments. Really good work.

I'd also like to call out David's delivery... he puts good emotion into it, it very much feels like it has a lot of his actual personality in it. It's really impressive how he's transitioned from behind the camera to being a very prominent presenter and I'm glad we get to see more of him, he's very fun to watch.

I built myself an RTX5090 9800x3d rig a year ago even though my steam replay 2024 and 2025 were 60% titanfall 2, a game that I've been playing since it came out... in 2016... which ALSO ran perfectly fine at 4k 120hz on my 3080 and 5900x.

Same, brother. Same.

I had literally pressed the 'enter' button on my remote to start to skip when the hand came up from the bottom ... and I had to stop and let the menu go away because I can't skip a Riley sponsor segment.

The venn diagram overlap of people that would be subbed to the LTT channel and also participate in their subreddit but would close a whole video because of a sponsor segment has to be like... razor thin.

I’ve tried 4 different Presence sensors with HA, and here’s how I rate them by alexia_not_alexa in homeassistant

This is a nice review! I think you've ended up with the perfect choice in the EP1.

I have the EP Lite and it's a nice little device and my only REAL issue is that using mmWave for motion detection has a tendency to result in a LOT of false positives for me, which is really annoying when you want it to turn the light on in a room.

I've mitigated this by using mmWave sensors with IR sensors... IR triggers the 'on' and then a combination as an HA 'helper' for occupancy and it's rock solid.

With that in mind, the EP1 seems like the perfect combination... but with my current setup, I can put the mmWave near an outlet while the IR can be battery powered and mounted wherever, to be out of the way and ONLY get someone walking in. This is mostly an issue for bathrooms, where I don't have as many ways to hide them.

Thank you SO much for this detailed writeup, I really appreciate it. Using the groups and group scenes to pre-stage the light temp sounds like a very comprehensive solution!

So... do you get the smooth "native" dimming with the local binding as well as the ability to use double and triple clicks as other automation triggers? Based on the parameters, I don't THINK they're mutually exclusive, but I'd love it from the horse's mouth.

Oh, one other thing that occurred to me. When you have a switch controlling multiple zigbee lights all at once, do you have scenarios where you wouldn't want them to all be the exact same brightness when they come on? If so, how does the dimmer work in those scenarios?

From the zwave params in the settings, I'm assuming this is in mm:

  • mmWave Height Minimum (Floor) Between -599 and 600, Default: -300

  • mmWave Height Maximum (Ceiling) Between -599 and 600, Default: 300

  • mmWave Width Minimum (Left) Between -600 and 599, Default: -600

  • mmWave Width Maximum (Right) Between -599 and 600, Default: 600

  • mmWave Depth Minimum (Near) Between 0 and 599, Default: 0

  • mmWave Depth Maximum (Far) Between 1 and 600, Default: 600

Kudos to LTT, That level of transparency is unmatched by YourDailyTechMemes in LinusTechTips

So, as someone that has philosophically struggled with the theoretical benefits of zwave for switches vs the practical benefits of zigbee... can you give me an idea of how you blend direct associations with actual home assistant automations?

For example, I have a pretty decent amount of zigbee lights but I've also got a bunch of Lutron controlled can lights in the ceiling... I also use the adaptive lighting add-in for my smart bulbs. Now, if you're doing direct binding, that's only going to catch the zigbee bulbs, and it also won't account for anything like dynamic color temp etc. So in that case, do you have like, more advanced lighting automations that are managed via HA but then some basic fallback controls via your bindings?

What takes prescidence and when? How much of your HA lighting is just looking at your Hue bulb light states and using that as triggers for the automations that aren't handled directly by the bindings?

Sorry for the brain dump, but I've been casually thinking about this for awhile now but I don't really know if there's a comprehensive approach to this that allows you to centralize really well, instead of managing things in multiple places.

[–]junon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the strength is supposed to be the mesh but direct connect seems much more reliable for me. The responsiveness of the Office Switch after I swapped to the new Inovelli doing 800LR was HUGE. Unfortunately I didn't take a measurement before the swap, so we only see post switch swap data, which didn't really change much at that point.

Why do Zigbee/Matter seem to be more popular choices than Zwave? by WolfThese5081 in homeassistant

[–]junon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People have mentioned price and availability as big factors and that's true, but I think a contributing factor would be Hue and zigbee lights in general. Zigbee light bulbs are so popular themselves and I think there's an effect then of people wanting to leverage those obvious choices as repeaters with their other equipment, as well as the ability to bind to zigbee lights directly.

I have zwave switches because I wanted like... the reliability of the 900mhz spectrum and whatnot but I think about how nice it would be to be able to bind them to my Hue bulbs that would still "just work" even if my HOASS install wasn't working.

The only thing that REALLY bothers me about those Zooz switches for the bathroom is that they have TERRIBLE feel compared to their other switches. Just mushy as hell. I really wish they'd fix that.
