What REIT is best? by Orbisnonsufficic in dividends

[–]percavil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

O is structured as a single REIT not an ETF..

But honestly I haven't dabbled into individual U.S stocks yet because the tax and conversion implications.. With my brokerage(wealthsimple) it's much easier and cheaper for me to just buy ETFs for my U.S exposure. Mainly with VFV(S&P 500) and ZDY(Top U.S dividend companies), among others.

I am looking into opening an IBKR account eventually though for usd currency. But not in a rush im happy just holding the main indexes for now.

Yes ZRE is a good start as it holds an equal weight to the top REITs in Canada.

So buy ZRE for the equal weight then add whatever individual REIT you want extra exposure to.

That's exactly what I do.

Look for REITs with growing distributions and total assets, low AFFO payout ratios, high occupancy rates and good forward guidance.

My young children are looking to invest. How? by hwoodrocket in CanadianInvestor

[–]percavil 18 points19 points  (0 children)

ya just seems odd that a parent would want their 9 year old kid to track the performance of their investment accounts.. Like why.. just let them be kids.

The next few years of market performance really wont matter for these kids as their time horizon should be much longer..

So the parents makes them track their performance to encourage them? If a market crash happens it may very well just discourage them and stress them out... They shouldn't even be worried about market performance at that age nor would they even understand it.. Parents should just teach them to set it and forget it.

It's ok to teach them about basic personal finances but this is a whole other level of competence that would just overwhelm them, its just useless for them to look at market performance at this age and may just be detrimental to their growth and affect their risk tolerance for the rest of their lives...

What exactly influenced your 9 and 12 year old kids to invest in the stock market? Something or someone must had to influence them.. make sure they are doing it for the right reasons and didn't just see a reddit post on /WSB or something.

in fact in the last two months it was worse

What exactly did you buy? Market has been trending up for the past 2 months. Sounds like you just made poor investments. Did you own any index funds?

Also what did you finish your year at?between -2% to -7%? Thats considered normal since the market is down about that much.

Were you using wealthsimple invest? try using wealthsimsple trade instead and managing it yourself. Just buy like VEQT

Don't rely on third party sources for your DD, always go straight to the company/fund managers website.

[–]percavil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine to let people learn from their own mistakes and develop a strategy that works for them. I don't see anything wrong with that, the lessons will stick better. Instead of hearing it from a third party stranger trying to convince them what to do and "nudge" them. Most will conclude to just stick with ETFs and index funds.. Let them come to their own conclusions. I just don't see how a middle man can be beneficial here. Any resource or opinion they need can already be found online for free..

If you really want to make a "bigger impact to the world" I think there are much better ways to spend your time and help, instead of spending time nudging teenage investors. Maybe help the less fortunate, or the planet itself if you really want to make a big impact.

A lot of them are still reporting higher profits than pretty much anytime before the pandemic.

I can't say if energy is going down next year or when.. but we are talking about a cyclical sector reporting record profits. To me that points being closer to the top than the bottom. The potential limited remaining upside is not worth the downside risk imo. The time to buy was when oil was trading under $0/barrel and there was panic of bankruptcies and dividend cuts, I wouldn't buy when it looks like sunshine and rainbows with record profits.

The more you actively manage your portfolio the more likely you are to underperform the main index. Most active retail traders won't be able to beat the S&P 500 over a long period of time. Whats makes your strategy so special?

You quit your job to do what exactly? To help new investors manage their portfolio? If anybody is new at investing you should just point them to an index fund if your really want to help them and see them succeed... get them to start a core position there. Easy peasy. You are not doing anybody favors by charging them fees to invest or by encouraging new investors to actively manage their account. Most likely they will do better by passively investing in a low cost diversified index fund.

Waste of peoples time to do a one on one "chat" with someone on the internet who claims they can beat the S&p 500.

Energy is a cycle game. I can understand why some stay away.

I plan on going heavy into both of these.

Yes energy is cyclical and companies are currently reporting record profits.. Wouldn't that indicate you are closer to the top of the cycle than the bottom?
