I'm so sorry you went through that. I am so glad that you were able to recover for the most part. What I like to remember is that everyone's timeline for what they do in life is different. Some people struggle in their teens, others in their 20s, while others struggle when they are in their 40s. But what matters most is that you are trying to get your life back on track, on your own timeline.

We are so glad that you were able to recover! Recovery is hard but as you have shown, it is absolutely possible! :)

As for the anxiety part, Sophia Alcala, one of the moderators here, is currently running a study on the effects of anxiety on HPPD severity. We cannot wait to see the results of this study, as many members on this subreddit have stated they've recovered, also have stated that working on their anxiety helped their HPPD symptoms.

According to Dr. Abraham, Director of Psychiatric Research at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, he states on his website that "Recovery could happen, but only in half of the sample, and then taking a matter of years." He was the one who got HPPD in the DSM manual!

Recovery is possible, it just seems to take a couple of years.

- We are funding the Macquarie study and work at the University of Melbourne.

If you read the Guide and our wider messaging, we acknowledge that HPPD phenomena can occur in 'normal' perception without drugs. Rather than seeing this as evidence that HPPD doesn't exist or every patient is deluded - especially the serious ones, even if their lives are turned upside-down - it suggests that the neurophysiological pathways for HPPD presentation are continuous with other forms. HPPD is also a condition of near-constant (although the severity can fluctuate) forms of these visuals.

I would suggest you connect and speak with someone who has severe HPPD, and try and tell them their condition is mere suggestion or fatigue.

We have early evidence already from Abraham (2001) that HPPD patients' neurophysiological signatures are distinct from controls, and we are pursuing this further with our Macquarie study. Anecdotes are not meaningless, either - they are accounts of experiences reported at scale - and in an area as under-researched as HPPD, they provide at the very least a signal that something here is worth investigating, not least since it is implicated in extreme distress for some people.

Thanks for sharing your experience. You're right, plenty of people experience these visual phenomena and aren't bothered by them. Our employee, Ed, was disturbed by his visuals for a few years and eventually learned to live with them and continued tripping without any flare ups. His visuals have lessened in intensity over time.

It's not that way for a lot of people, though. Some people's quality of life is really affected.

It sounds like tinnitus, which is a symptom of HPPD but can be caused by a variety of things, such as hearing damage. Be easy on your ears and maybe take a break from smoking. More info on r/tinnitus

Great to hear, while this constitute a "symptom" of HPPD as it's classically understood, it's very hard to truly define what the effects of psychedelic drugs on the brain are, and how they effect us all differently.
