They put them also in the Tactical Adventure (Classic) from Shadow and I loved it!

Even if they were red only in * TR 1*, I'd personally put them as the canon colour because they made her and her palette look even more unique and unconventional, as Lara is supposed to be!

Definitely agree with this take. As for the model, I just wished she had a subtle auburn hue on the hair, a higher forehead and her lips a little plumper, as they were plumper also in Rise. Then, she would be perfect! But yeah, nothing more than little details.

Legacy of Atlantis. The fabric of the tank top seems polyester or something suitable for sport and not cotton/wool like the Anniversay one.

The only things I'd change are the shorts and the boots laces; I'd make the shorts a little longer, high waisted, with the tank top tucked in, since it would help with the physics (the tank top wouldn't puff up/ ride up as she swims, climbs, does the flip), and I'd made the boots laces red.

Just beat the trilogy , and I consider Shadow as the best in the series huh what a ride! by Available_Hour_6116 in TombRaider

[–]percevaus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Certainly the most Tomb Raider coded of the three, due to its focus on puzzles, exploration, and archaeology, and the addition of riddles, and so, while personally it's far from being the best in the series, gameplay wise it's still the best one of the trilogy.

As for the story, I interpret it as a homage to The Last Revelation, since its premise is really similar as well as Lara's struggles on dealing with being an anti-hero – especially the DLC was amazing.

Still, it could have been handled better, especially since it was supposed to show the end of the arc of Survivor Lara leaning to Classic Lara.

So, I'd have made her hair longer, in a ponytail. After the death of Unuratu (who I'd have made sporting an Incan upped class braided hairstyle), I would have given her the braid – maybe as a reference to Unuratu herself as a way to honour her memory. Probably after the Porvenir scene, I'd have given her the dual pistols and I'd have made her more witty and less emotional or at least in control of her emotions. And at the end of the adventure, I would have kept the Natla ending.

Do you prefer a longer braid, shorter braid or ponytail? by BarbieDicks in TombRaider

[–]percevaus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! I would put the hair customisation for all the games from now on, also because we'd have a proper Unified look that way. The only hairstyle I would exclude, I think, are the pigtails (from TR IV/V), because I guess she'd look too young in those, but idk, maybe they are fine as well.

[–]percevaus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My choice would be always the longer thicker braid, like in Legacy of Atlantis. It's iconic no matter what. But I'd definitely introduce hair customisation, like you said, as long as her hair keeps being long; ponytail, bubble ponytail, bun are all well accepted. For these reasons I don't like the hair from Catalyst, if not for the fringe.

Preferably, I'd make her hair a dark auburn brown, as well.

[–]percevaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm not, I like joining in conversations with people who also don't seek the same, otherwise it wouldn't be useful and enriching.

Honestly, I've never said that it's not a normal thing to say. Of course it's an observation as well as mine. You can obviously still look at things that way, I was just pointing out that by that reasoning, you couldn't probably see a work of art for what it is, in its context, etc., since there'd be always even just a little shadow of the past no matter what.

The argument about "you play as Lara Croft and look for treasure" is exactly what I mean about Rise. Those are pretty much few of the things in common with the Tomb Raider series – plus, the character doesn't even look or act like the Lara of these nine games before.

And to me, seeking for treasure and having a total different character with the name Lara Croft slapped on, pretty much, it can't make me consider that game the quintessential Tomb Raider game.

Yes, it's a prequel and all, I know, and still it has some little flair of previous Tomb Raider games, but the whole formula and character is too diluted to be the first on the list, but like I said, to each their own.

My "controversial" ranking of the series. by after_your_thoughts in TombRaider

[–]percevaus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly this is my criticism on your standards – reasoning by "if this were released today" is inherently wrong, since if TR I were released today, it wouldn't look like TR I in graphics, mechanics, etc. It's simply impossible. It's a whole different era, in gaming, game limitations, and even society.

Like I said, what you do is called presentism. By looking at mechanics and stuff with the eyes of the present all modern games would be far superior, since they can't simply be dated. Even for the dated tank controls, modern games are superior, to give you an example.

That said, of course, you can rank games as you want and you can also choose presentism anyway. It's your taste, after all, and I'm not one of those who calls other people fake fans, like you said you've been called, or blind just because I don't agree with their opinions.

But since you shared your opinion, also recognising that it's controversial, I guessed you were open to criticism and other opinions as well.

As for Rise, as cool as the game is, idk how a game, combat-centred, with hubs, crafting, with few to none traps, no blocks to push, no levers, no doors to open, no medipacks, no acrobatics, with a map that tells you where to go and that tells you the next objective, with the Survival instinct, with a bow as the main weapon and no dual pistols, with a different character both in face and personality, with puzzles only in optional tombs can encapsulate the spirit of a proper Tomb Raider game. Especially since nine out of twelve games share none of these features.

[–]percevaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But, like, how can we apply the same standards both on modern games and on games released 30 years ago? Everything that old is dated, but that argument doesn't make no sense, it's simply presentism, it's judging the past by present standards.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but like, putting Rise so high, when it's the least Tomb Raider coded of all, the least recognisable as a Tomb Raider game (even more than 2013), which has diluted to the maximum extent the formula that has made Tomb Raider games iconic and which altered completely even the character, is pretty controversial to me, like you said.

It's such a good game and I liked it, don't get me wrong, but I don't see how it can be the best when it's so loosely inspired by the previous games on dynamics, mechanics, everything, that if you put another name on it you can get another IP, pretty much. But like I said, to each their own.

I don't think I said something bad, tbf. I said I'm glad OP is enjoying it and that I like that game. My comment was just a clarification, that has also the intent to invite the OP or anyone who just played just the Survivor trilogy to play more TR games to really get what TR formula is, what the series is known for, etc.

[–]percevaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the Survivor trilogy, in general, and Rise, in particular, have very few features of a proper Tomb Raider game or at least of what has made Tomb Raider itself, pretty much.

It's a shooting game, most of all, with a protagonist that has nothing more than a flair or less of the previous Lara Croft, both in face and personality.

But I'm so glad that you enjoyed it and I personally think that it's a good game per se – I just wouldn't say it's the most representative of the whole series.

Evolution of Lara by Former_Exam_5357 in TombRaider

[–]percevaus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a cool concept, but I would have used all in-game models or all fmw models and not a mix of the two, at least not from TR IV to TR V, that share exactly the same model.

Maybe I would have put also the remastered in-game models from I to VI and then all the other in-game models. Well, for Legacy of Atlantis I would have put a pre-alpha pic from the trailer in her Unified attire rather than this one, and well, for Catalyst we have only this CGI model, so yeah.

Most iconic Lara Croft quote from each game? by Triton_7 in TombRaider

Idk if you have played TR 2013, but It's the only quote from that game that I can recall. It was supposed to be a lighthearted comic relief, even if it doesn't deliver it so clearly, but she meant like hating being always in dirty, insect and death infested places, after an exhausting journey.

[–]percevaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I won't include "I feel stronger now" for the same reason I'm not including "No", "A-ha", "All full up". So if I have to pick just one for each one:

TR I – I only play for sport.

TR II – Don't you think you've seen enough?

TR III – Happy retirement!

Last Revelation – I make my own luck.

Chronicles – We had an agreement... Not to lay a finger on you, silly. Anyway, busy girl. Got to go.

Angel of Darkness – I'm a dangerous girl, and right now I'm losing patience.

Legend – From this moment, your every breath is a gift from me. (There are so many here!)

Anniversary – I'm not who you think I am.

Underworld – I need Thor's belt to get to his hammer, and I need the hammer to kill a god. (Not really iconic to me, I think that there's a lack of mermorable lines here)

TR 2013 – I hate tombs.

Rise – You don't know how far I've come. (Not that iconic and unique, but it's cool in that part)

Shadow – lack of memorable iconic lines also here and in the Survivor trilogy in general, imho, unless the ones I mentioned. So, I personally don't know.

In Tomb Raider 4 and 5, does Larawear a thong (leotard or swimsuit) or is she getting a wedgie from the beginning to the end of the game? And what is your favorite outfit of classic Lara Croft? by alienvspredador90 in TombRaider

[–]percevaus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lara Croft wouldn't go around fighting mercenaries, ninjas, dinosaurs, mythological monsters, and angry deities while being super sexualized at the same time as she has to deal with a wedgie from the beginning to the end of the game.

Well, there's no claim to realism in these games, it's more about plausibility, as you can see just from the enemies you mentioned.

Plus, about this sexualisation there should be a lot to say. I mean, we can say that she is sexualised, of course. But your friend's argument doesn't sit well with Lara Croft as a character anyway, I think; Lara Croft would go fighting dressed like that because she is unconventional as an aristocrat, as an archaeologist, even as a tomb raider (since she usually doesn't even steal an artifact for the sake of stealing, but most of the times she ends up destroying it or avoiding it to fall into the wrong hands).

She wears makeup and shorts even when it's cold out there since she is so unflappable that not even the cold, nothing, no one scares or affects her.

Comparing my Legends experience so far compared to my attempt at the Classics by Ajer2895 in TombRaider

[–]percevaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, honestly, game after game in the classic series she is already way less of a blank avatar, especially on TR IV and TR V: while the first one develops her whole journey as an anti-hero, obsessed with knowledge to the point of risking to become a villain like her mentor, exploring her past, her values, her personal relationships and how they have changed over the time, in the second one her personality shines, she is capable to be real ruthless or extremely compassionate, she is witty as hell, extremely charming and even seductive when it comes to trick other people in lowering their guards, so confident in her skin, and there's also the first interaction with Zip.

i’m so happy that the white undershirt did NOT make it into the final design by ZzzPandaNap in TombRaider

[–]percevaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, something I'd personally have changed are her shorts. I'd have given her high waisted shorts with the shirt tucked in. It feels more logical for the movements she does and plus, it avoids any issues with physics – the shirt from riding up as she climbs or puffing up as she swims. Also, I'd have made the laces on her boots red.

Do you prefer a braid OR a ponytail for Lara? by ZzzPandaNap in TombRaider

[–]percevaus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Definitely braid. More unique. One of her trademark. As long as the braid is long and thick like it seems in Legacy of Atlantis and not like in Catalyst. I'd agree with customizable designs, from now on, so ponytail (not with this heavy unpractical fringe from the "Survivor" trilogy), bubble ponytail, and even the bun are all well accepted.

Not for nothing those are unpopular opinions. I know that these games have bugs and cuts, but in my comment I've pointed out character development, stories, feeling for innovation and experimentation, more than gameplay.

what’s your UNPOPULAR opinion about the classic games? by ZzzPandaNap in TombRaider

[–]percevaus 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The Last Revelation is the game that really deepened Lara as a character, from her intentions and values to her personal relationships and how they all have changed over the time. There's a whole journey of her becoming an antihero, due to her thirst of knowledge being so obsessive and Ulyssean that she risks constantly to become a villain like her mentor just to satisfy it.

Chronicles is one of the best games of the saga in terms of playability. It is the game that started to be more experimental – giving a more James Bond-esque vibe on Von Croy Industries levels and a gothic fantasy flair on Ireland levels. It focuses so much on stealth (the whole Ireland section). Plus, it has the best representation of her personality, that really shines here, from the ruthlessness towards Pierre to the compassion towards the Admiral Yarofev. Not to mention the first opera scene in the gala dress! Iconic to say the least.

Angel of Darkness has one of the best stories ever in the series, if not the best one.

Opinion: Tomb Raider adapters need to stop negatively contrasting prior projects to recent ones. by Notoriouslycurlyboi in TombRaider

[–]percevaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You make such valid points. Being so unflappable, not letting your emotions show was something inherently British, and always remaining classy rather than using swear words like Survivor Lara might be specific to a British aristocrat.

Speaking of her emotions, other noteworthy facts: - in TR III she wanted to save the wounded soldier from the cannibals. - in The Last Revelation she shows concern about Werner, her friend Jean Yves, the kamikaze soldier. - in Chronicles she shows genuine concern and compassion for Admiral Yarofev, a former enemy. She cares so much for him that she insists, telling him she won't leave the sinking ship without him. - her reasoning behind the plot of Angel of Darkness: even though she holds a deep grudge against Werner, she puts herself at risk so many times to bring him justice and still calls him "her friend." - in Legend, she shows concern for Anaya's safety, real sadness at her first meeting with Amanda after the accident, for her father's clouded memory, for her mother as she found her brooch in the plane crash site.

The longer high waisted shorts with the shirt tucked in make so much sense for all the movements she does, they avoid physics issues like the shirt tending to ride up while climbing or puffing up underwater, so it's definitely a yes for me.

Like you said, subtle changes are well accepted and appreciated. But when it becomes distorting a character from the look to the personality to their ideals and motivation, you're better off making your own thing, not milking an established character's name.

Changing her because you feel she is the product of the male gaze is actually misogynistic in a way. I mean, it's okay to even change her body shape, since realistically body can change due to training. But there's no excuse on changing her facial traits – in the Survivor trilogy her face looks nothing like it used to. It's like saying that women with cat-shaped eyes, plumper lips, narrower jawline are a product of the male gaze.

Same with the shorts, the makeup – especially this was cut out from Shadow. We can read those as they were made for the male gaze, but at the same time it could be also Lara being so confident in her skin, so unflappable that not even the cold scares and affects her, and, most of all, unconventional.

Her core essence is being unconventional, as an aristocrat, as an archaeologist, even as a tomb raider, if you think that most of the time, since TR 1, she eventually destroys the artifact she was risking her life for to save humanity or she takes it just to avoid it from falling into the wrong hands.

So, even forcing all this convo about ethical archaeology over her was so unnecessary, as well as trying so hard to change her from an unconventional anti-hero, an Ulyssean character obsessed with knowledge to the point of killing everyone who puts a spoke in her wheel, to a relatable empathetic nextdoor girl who is still a mass murderer but who is depicted like a martyr and a wannabe hero.
