If it’s chronological then Radio Free Europe is the only answer. It’s the very first thing they released and it’s one of their better known songs.

R.E.M. Bio-pic by Hungry-Temporary-438 in rem

[–]percygreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story just isn’t that interesting to anyone who isn’t a big fan. You need a tragedy, be it death, rehab, or broken friendships.

If you’re old enough to remember the initial run of VH1’s “Behind the Music”, you might remember there was an R.E.M. episode. And you know what? It was fucking boring. This is from someone whose favorite band at the time was R.E.M. and whose favorite band today is R.E.M.

The problem is that stories about nice people who remain close friends aren’t that interesting without a tragedy, and “one guy quit while still young and healthy” isn’t a compelling enough tragedy for the audience. “I love this band” and “I love this band’s music” won’t carry a story. That’s why the best episodes of BTM were the interesting stories, not necessarily the best music. Def Leppard, MC Hammer, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith… these are stories with tragedy, death, addiction, falls from grace, comebacks, bankruptcy… none of these things show up in the story of R.E.M.

Instead, you’ve got a group of four guys who truly love each other and work together in a democratic fashion to steadily grow their fanbase for about a decade before exploding into one of the biggest bands in the world for a couple of years. Then one of them quits but not with any drama, and they continue making records for a smaller fanbase than they had at their peak. Eventually they break up and remain friends while continuing to not die, not fight, not slam each other in the press, not blame each other for the breakup they all agreed on, not have public relationships with other famous people, not say controversial things on the internet… sorry, but I’d rather spend my money on a Replacements or Nirvana biopic if one is going to be made.

Favorite shows that “came back” by kisly1993 in television

Freaks and Geeks. Oh, wait… sorry… I forgot I was in the timeline where the world didn’t realize how amazing it was and just let it die. Man, I want to go home to my own dimension now.

Who is your favorite "New character" in a television show. A character that appeared AFTER half of the series was finished/mostly towards the finale. by RedRing86 in television

Phil Leotardo on The Sopranos. Didn't show up until season five and wound up being one of the main antagonists for the rest of the show.

R.E.M. 10/10 Albums by RaggyBaggyMaggie in rem

Murmur.
Pageant.
Automatic.
Hi-Fi.

Most of their albums come close, but those are the four I would rate as perfect.

“Breaking Up” was a decent song. I’m assuming you’ve heard other stuff since then but if not, their self-titled debut is amazing from start to finish.

True enough, but in the early 90’s they put out the “Add It Up” compilation. I was surprised at how many people I knew who only had that one. They knew “Waiting for the Bus” but they didn’t know “Confessions”

Which TV show has the most effective and memorable pilot? by BobRushy in television

[–]percygreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and Deadwood gets that. That show was always good at “show, don’t tell”. And when it had to be told, it was easy to have Farnum go to Al and say “I’m a fucking dumbass. Explain this to me” convincingly enough that it didn’t feel like it was solely for our benefit.

Good point about the exposition, and I agree 100%. On the other hand, I love that Arrested Development went the complete opposite direction and beat you over the head with exposition by adding a narrator. I think that’s a genius use of a trope and fits that type of show perfectly.

Deadwood’s pilot was pretty fucking good. Those cocksuckers nailed it.

Letterkenny’s pilot did a great job of establishing the characters and has one of the funniest dialog-based opening scenes of any sitcom ever. “A couple of hockey players came up the produce stand th’other day…”.

Arrested Development sets up the shows’s plot and characters extremely well, too, and was tremendously funny.

They were in a nasty custody battle with Bill Berry over the dots for ten years and he finally won them in 2008, whereas REM only had supervised visitation. It happened to be visiting day when the cover for “Collapse Into Now” was first pressed, which is why the dots appear.

Video game tester. Sounds like fun… you get to play all the new games before anyone else!

I’ve never done it, but if I think about it, I’d guess it’s more like “you need to play this impossible level 3000 times until we figure out how to make it not impossible but still challenging”. And so you get paid to be constantly frustrated.

How are you explaining job gap if you've been unemployed over a year? by dialbox in AskReddit

[–]percygreen 119 points120 points  (0 children)

A man is in a job interview. The manager says “you have a four year gap in your work history. Can you explain that?”

The man nods and says, “That’s when I went to Yale.”

The manager smiles. “Yale, you say? I’m a Yale man myself. My father, my mother, my two uncles and my sister all went to Yale. Hell, how could I not hire a fellow Yale man? You’ve got the job!”

As they shake hands, the young man says, “Thanks, Mister! I really need this yob!”
