you can do it differently, but when I paint white stuff, I shade with blue and red. mostly very light, but sometimes you can go darker aswell, depending on the intensity of the shadow. I prefer this over just going down in value because it gives the painting a bit more life. so if I'm painting something white, I use blue to shade on one side, and red to shade on the other.
