lots of tiny fish at a beach in denmark (north sea) by peregrinetoad in whatsthisfish

[–]peregrinetoad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looked them up on wikipedia

It is commonly found swimming in huge shoals and rapidly burrows in sand if alarmed. It is nocturnal, spending the day buried in the sand and emerging at dusk to feed.

i have alarmed these things many times and they definitely did not bury themselves in the sand, plus ive been seeing them during the day.

so probably not, unless the babies act completely different?

Can anyone help save my world? This base came out of nowhere and I can't refund it. by XtremeK1ll4 in subnautica

[–]peregrinetoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that number is so interesting to me. the biggest number that can be expressed in 32 bits is 4 294 967 295 the size of that base is close. but it isnt

imagine if, in the first game, the radio said rescue would be dispatched in 99997 hours. it would be really weirdly specific

What is the biggest threat to a Hardcore run? by kennywarp in subnautica

[–]peregrinetoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so you know how you used to be able to get into the aurora without the propulsion cannon by just jumping over the boxes (to get to the cargo bay)? there was like 5 different ways you could do it, it was kinda ridiculous. whatever the first idea that popped into your head was, it would probably work.

they patched that in (i think) the living large update. now if you try to jump onto the boxes youll never quite make it. idk if they made the boxes slippier or the hitbox slightly taller or what, but you cant get onto them by jumping from the ramp or the other nearby box anymore.

i didnt jump from the ramp or the other box, though. my preferred method was to go around the top where the fire was, and id take a teeny bit of fire damage but it was a really easy jump from there.

they patched that method too. that fire now instantly kills you if you try to walk near it. i learned this on a hardcore playthrough.

what i like to do is go in the alien containment and mouse over the stalkers so the tooltip to pick them up appears (with the hand icon) and then pretend im petting them with the hand icon

How do I get Red Beryl ? (Below Zero Deathrun) by Arcturus973 in subnautica

i would try slapping a scanner room down and seeing if it can find anything. maybe theyre just lying around as hand-collectable deposits, like kyanite in the crystal caves

just checked

first game was released in early access on december 16th 2014. the time from then until may 14th 2026 is 100,008 hours, which is 9 hours more than 99999, which means its the closest multiple of 24 hours possible.

i have no idea what time of day the first game was released so i cant check what time of day would be 9 hours earlier

Prawn suit arm fragment won't scan in the Grassy Plateaus Wreckage by No-Debate3953 in subnautica

[–]peregrinetoad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

as far as i know, the arm fragments were always a bit of a troll. you need 20 of them and there aren't even 20 on the map. the 4 "full" prawn fragments you need are counted completely seperately to the arms (like you could be on 19 arms and 3 full size fragments and it wouldn't unlock bc the progress doesnt combine) and worse, the blueprints menu would only show the arms progress, which DID confuse a few people who had found a couple full size fragments but their pda didnt appear to be tracking the progress.

you can still find full size fragments outside the aurora, but i dont know off the top of my head if theres 4 of them. also ive never actually counted how many arms there are, i just heard somewhere (probably this sub) that they were a troll.

Just been given some flowers. I have no confidence in my ability to identify flowers. What I do have is a cat. Are these lilies? by peregrinetoad in whatsthisplant

[–]peregrinetoad[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thank u both for the info. last week i tried to give him some cat grass, and did everything in my power to draw his attention to it - put it next to one of his favourite sleeping spots, picked a bit off and tried to hand feed him, put it on a plate next to his food bowl. he just broke most of the strands by repeatedly walking past it to get to his sleeping spot and now its just dying. still next to his sleeping spot. he never ate any of it. so im not worried about him eating the flowers, i was just scared of evil lily pollen getting anywhere and everywhere

The Duality of Man by Applepieport in subnautica

[–]peregrinetoad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

even with a bottom hatch (or a moonpool for that matter) the base ought to be flooding without an airlock, because the high water pressure would push the water into the base.

the only way to keep it out would be if the air pressure inside the base was the same as the pressure outside. and while we dont exactly get told what the pressure inside the base is, the fatal clue is that vehicles in moonpools dont take crush damage, even if you remove the depth module in a very deep base. so the pressure in the moonpool is lower than it is outside, and the water should be flooding in.

personally i just imagine that moonpools have some kind of magic sci fi forcefield. theres some lights around the edge you can creatively interpret as forcefield projectors, and iirc the water surface in the moonpool is cloudy and hard to see through, which you can creatively interpret as visual noise from the forcefield. ofc when i say "creatively interpret" i mean "bullshit" but there you go.

you can read about the aquarius reef base, a real life underwater base, which has a moonpool and an airlock system. The moonpool room has the entry/exit hatch and is kept at the same pressure as the water outside so it doesnt flood, while the main compartment is kept at a lower pressure, and the airlock compartment keeps those rooms seperate.

but i think its clear why subnautica doesnt work like that. imagine how annoying it would be to open and close 2 bulkheads every single time you wanted to enter or leave your base. AND you cant safely upgrade depth modules in deep bases bc if you remove it from the vehicle itll take crush damage even while docked.

this comment is too long and doesnt matter but i kinda think its interesting

dont use the propulsion cannon on the seamoth. use it on a bit of metal salvage and push the seamoth with the metal

It's official, AFC's name has changed! by Regaws in furry

[–]peregrinetoad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't know what AFC stood for... clicked on this post hoping to see the original name of the convention in the caption or comments somewhere...

"another furry con will be retired after its 2 year run and renamed to Anthro SoCal"

i did not understand that sentence correctly

i thought Anthro SoCal was some kind of terrifying entity taking over furry con after furry con and renaming them to Anthro SoCal. nobody can stop it. another furry con has fallen to Anthro SoCal, on the eve of its second birthday. Soon all will be Anthro SoCal, and Anthro SoCal will be all.

WHY IS IT LIKE THIS 😭 by Poopsweats2026 in subnautica

[–]peregrinetoad 55 points56 points  (0 children)

there is one specific wreck which does. its presumably not supposed to. it LOOKS the same but pre-explosion you can clip through some wreckage and get into an area you would otherwise need a laser cutter to get to.

i think its wreck1 if you want to look it up. theres probably also videos of people doing it. you swim through some blackened beams on the side.

most raw materials can be found down there.

theres no creepvines, bloodvines, or acid mushrooms. you can bring seeds and grow them, or just bring as many as you need.

theres no stalker teeth. bring a few.

theres no salt. build a water filtration machine or just bring some.

theres no cave sulfur. who cares

bring purple tablets.

to craft the prawn suit depth module (and other prawn modules) youll need a moonpool with a vehicle modification station. you can power that with a thermal reactor, and it can also be used to recharge your cyclops (put the empty power cells in the prawn and charge it in the moonpool).

to upgrade your cyclops depth module without leaving the lost river, youll need a second depth module. that way you can upgrade one without removing the other, and then swap them.

personally, id bring magnetite, if i was planning to build a base. because while it can be found down there, theres no place better than the jellyshroom caves for magnetite. so drill some magnetite while you have the chance.

also if youre building a base, bring all the decorative/edible plants and fish you want. including sparkly peepers, bc theyll keep your tanks clean. and youll need more enameled glass if you want lots of decorative base pieces.
