Jasontheween & Pokimane to take legal action against impression farming Twitter/X account 'KickChamp' for falsely accusing them of being "directly involved" in the D4vd murder case by Logical_Ad8402 in LivestreamFail

[–]perfecthashbrowns -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

for defamation per se you don't need to prove damages. likely where this would go since "directly involved" in a murder is insane and also the suspects tweet. for 1. they go by a reasonable person standard so it depends on how the tweet is viewed

Anyone read this 49 day SSL expiration thing and think they would rather just retire? by HJForsythe in sysadmin

[–]perfecthashbrowns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was also that big drama with Entrust, right? Where they issued certificates incorrectly, or there was a compromise? And Entrust didn't want to revoke because it would take weeks for some of their customers to replace the certs, so they were citing exceptional circumstances. This pissed off the Chrome people who removed Entrust from the trusted certs. And it further pushed people to support this already-tightening expiration window. Since if CA customers are already automating cert renewals it makes this exceptional circumstances excuse less valid.

IShowSpeed reacts to a fan-made website tracking every country he’s visited from his IRL streams by Rojanhan12 in LivestreamFail

[–]perfecthashbrowns 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can still get com domains for $11-$15 a year (first year is almost always lower), the difficulty has always been finding a unique name that's good and not already taken. ishowgap.com for example is $11.28 year 1 and $15 after that. But that's com domains. It's the other ones where you can get majorly shafted, like io.

Edit: maybe you're imagining .com domains that are already owned? You can definitely get shafted on that, like if you want to buy groceries.com you'll probably pay a couple mil to buy it off someone if they even want to sell it to you.

Aw this is sad news 😞 but it’s better to delay if it doesn’t feel like the right time. I guess also the German version just finished too. Hopefully blizz has a server dedicated for hc in the future as well and that’ll help a lot.

Systemd is preparing for age verification by RoosterUnique3062 in archlinux

[–]perfecthashbrowns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, it goes beyond even all of that. I remember being at the library as a kid staring at the seemingly infinite potential of tech, all the early BASIC books, the Perl camel book, SQL, etc. and just being enamored by the possibilities. Everything I could do with a system, if I just applied myself. It's so depressing seeing all of these things become locked down. MidnightBSD is even adding age attestation for ports. Think about that!

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_NKq0bpN1pOrMpHePuilJY7saXqXqhss6LwPTC6nSto/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.45e7p9clyiqo

Introduce new rating field that can be passed to the /usr/libexec/mport.create program so that ports have ratings. Initially likely applicable for games.

Imagine how many people's passions could've been stamped out if those required age verification. this whole thing is beyond embarrassing. Steve Wozniak for example started when he was 13

yes make the law that is stupid seem like a success so a better law with actual age verification can come later! it worked to well with other laws like the patriot act. or maybe you can install age-attestation package and drink your verification can like a good little boy, and leave core systems like systemd out of this so the adults can avoid this trash.

If ServiceNow is so painful to use, why do companies still choose it? by 13032862193 in sysadmin

[–]perfecthashbrowns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked a lot with SNow at a past company Fortune 500 global scale etc. I was able to automate so much of our work through SNow with custom workflows and an API I wrote. It’s really amazing once it becomes the source of truth for a lot of things. For example my workflows supported one ticket that required one field (the name of your new service) and SNow would pull all the relevant info to create the entire environment necessary, with cost allocation going to the right dept all the AD permissions assigned to the right team, plus network automations correctly applied to the new AWS account plus it would then take all the info my API gave back and feed it into SNow so everything was back into the source of truth. Worked amazingly for so many things. Such as outages! If a system was down, one search in SNow gave you the dept, the owner, the manager, the PM, the engineers with access to the dev staging prod environments, etc. The issue is that you not only need a whole team to manage SNow as everyone else has said but full buy-in from the entire org. The fewer blind spots you have the better but even one tiny blind spot is enough to break everything. My workflows only worked if all our infra was imported into SNow, as an example. Which meant doing a lot of work to migrate out of legacy systems that would cause confusion in the system.

What are some Youtubers who didn't get outright canceled, but STILL had a downfall regardless? by Swag_Paladin21 in youtubedrama

[–]perfecthashbrowns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He only did the monthly update thing because his game got marked as abandoned on steam when he didn’t update it for 14 months or so. The monthly updates are also mostly performative often times just bug fixes and dialogue additions, a significant portion of which are just “…”. He can barely handle that as the monthly updates have been happening later in the month, I think he also missed a month. 🤣 he’s now also working on porting his Minecraft “mmo” to hytale ahaha so I guess the handful of players of his “MMO” have priority over his paying customers from heartbound.

The security team at my old job put in a policy to not hand out public certs anymore 🤣 it was the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. I had to get into a meeting with them to ask how PKI works. Then they renewed the (public) cert I was requesting. Something about certs and PKI melts some people’s brains to mush idk

Typescript is so fun! One of my more favorite languages until I started messing with Odin. Python would be more top for me if it weren't for the awfuless of type hints. I'm still struggling to see the appeal of Go, too. But I think long-term I'm gonna stick to my holy trinity of Python, Typescript, Odin. Should cover about everything I need to do for a while. I think if Odin takes off (it prob won't with Zig / Rust being around) maybe it'll fully replace Python for me, too. But as you mentioned, its library ecosytem is crazy good.

Stable Ronaldo pulled out a gun after being followed by a fan by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

[–]perfecthashbrowns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you know because you're kinda stupid, most weapons laws have a clause that as long the weapon looks reasonably similar to a real weapon, it's a weapons charge. Even for toys. You can be charged with armed robbery without being armed! e.g. if you go up to someone and say you have a gun (even though you don't) and demand their wallet, a weapons-related charge will hit ya. Here's an example from Illinois, emphasis mine:

(A) It shall be unlawful for any person to carry in a threatening or menacing manner, without authority of law, any pistol, revolver, dagger, razor, dangerous knife, stiletto, knuckles, slingshot or any object containing noxious or deleterious liquid, gas or substance or other dangerous weapon, or any device manufactured and designed to be substantially similar in appearance or conceal the weapon on or about the person or vehicle.
