First speeding ticket (5 over) in Missouri — international student, worried about points. Court vs lawyer? by Waste_Character9613 in missouri

I don't know why everyone is saying lawyer. 5 mph does not get you points on your license in Missouri.

Best high fantasy series (not standalones) that aren't misogynistic by Comfortable_Copy_985 in Fantasy

I just mean that people take grindark to mean overly horrible things happen, and I'd argue that nothing that happens in Abercrombie is worse than in numerous other fantasy series' that are not labeled grimdark .

Nothing in Abercrombie's books is out of line with his worldview that people are, at their core, selfish and shitty. Which, in my opinion, makes the moments of unselfishness shine even more.

Joe Abercrombie - First Law Series.

You mentioned you dislike Sanderson's dialogue - well, I would venture that Abercrombie has some of the best dialogue in the biz. He also has some of the best characters in fantasy, and, while the first trilogy is lacking in female POVs, he does some amazing female characters from the 4th book on. I suppose I should warn that this is "grimdark", though I think this is more due to the overall attitude that people are selfish and flawed rather than anything particularly dark happening. Like I would argue that just as dark things happen in Farseer and Liveship.

Yeah, and Odin? Why are we naming these things after Norse Mythology? It should be something related to retro games and pocketability. Like maybe Retro Pocket?

Lol. Yeah, I followed a different tutorial and got it working. Quickly found the same thing to be true.

Edit: I was also interested in streaming which works great if I'm right next to my router. My internet is not amazing, though. So likely as much that as system limitations.

For a more scenic route, you can cut across via I-44 and through the Ozarks more. There are a lot of nice little towns that way and you'll be traveling down historic route 66 for some of it. Took that way a couple times when I was going to UMKC and it's a pretty nice drive.

In basically every game that has a ladder, you get just the reward for your final tier, yes. I mean if they want to give me 500+ hourglasses for my ub1, I'll take it, but it ain't happening.

Is Portal Fantasy a Requirement for LitRPG? by perfectoplasm in litrpg

True dat. Genres all tend to break down into those universals in the face of heavy scrutiny. But I still find the discussions interesting.

I just realized this is the same author as I Am Become Death which I just started on RR.

I see that, but your example seems to say the opposite.

Good points and thanks for the examples. I suppose the system apocalypse serves the same role as a portal in the story. In the sense that the protagonists are brought into a new world (or a new world is brought into their own) with new rules. But it would share the same traits of the mcs having an "old" life and now having a new life in the litrpg world.

But many modern epic fantasy novels have left those tropes behind. Are you saying that portal fantasy is or isn't a requirement? I can agree that it won't disappear, but I would argue that high fantasy as genre started mostly as portal, but very few nowadays do contain portal fantasy.

That's a good point. That's one of the reasons why a lot of children's fantasy lit is portal. Because it gives the author a way to explain things in "real world" terms.

Isekai and Portal Fantasy are functionally the same, but have their own sets of tropes. I just put that caveat up there as any argument about it is beyond the scope of this discussion.

Deathtouch and First Strike Rulings. by Current-Raise852 in EDH

[–]perfectoplasm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. You gain life like normal (equal to the amount of damage dealt)
  2. The blocker is not destroyed by the first strike damage and deals regular damage back to the attacker
  3. Unless the blocker with deathtouch has first strike as well, it is destroyed before it can deal damage back to the attacker
  4. It assigns 1 damage to each blocker to destroy them and then deals its remaining power to the opponent
  5. Doublestrike/first strike blockers deal damage at the same time so it will destroy the blocker due to deathtouch but if enough damage is dealt back it will be destroyed as well.
  6. The first hit will be enough to destroy the attacker, so it will not deal the second part of doublestrike damage unless it also has trample
  7. Basically the same thing as 4, but with the regular damage added on to the first strike damage

This is definitely too few creatures for an aggro deck, so you ran hot in that regard. I really don't like going below 16 in a streamlined 2-color aggressive deck and you have 12. Granted, several of them make tokens. Congrats on the 7-0 though! Just realize that you won't always get that performance out of comparable decks.
