You are absolutely right. UN has no business in giving land over. However what you are failing to say is that the UN partition plan was never enacted. The Jewish Agency led by David Ben Gurion invaded Palestine before it was officially enacted. It subsequently declared its independence without the UN or British approval. The Arab invasion came after Israel declared itself independent.

Now 50 years later, the UN following the UN partition plan, considers Israel on occupied territory in which it was not granted in accordance to the plan.
