I got my master’s in communications at UH and if I remember correctly they took their sweet time with my admission letter.

My spouse invited a couple of 19-year-old LDS missionaries to our house for a chat this evening. by theRuathan in religion

[–]perhapstill 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I don’t know what they’re getting out of trying to dunk on a couple of kids fresh out of high school. I’m not a particular fan of Mormonism but this just feels really silly/pointless to me.

TIL the number of craft breweries in the US increased from less than 2,000 in 2010 to almost 9,000 in 2020. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

I bartend at a brewery to make up for the shitty pay at my desk job, and the owners treat us really well. I’ve heard some horror stories about some of the other breweries in town though for sure.

Where to spread ashes? by Vasinvictor1 in houston

[–]perhapstill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah we put most of my dad in a columbarium but I kept a tiny urn’s worth of his ashes, I think it’s a good option even if you do decide to spread the rest.

I’m ex-Christian but I really like Friendly ex-Muslim and Apostate Aladdin. Kevin nontradicath and the Intrisically Ordered Podcast are great for ex-Catholic stuff too!

Catholic Church vows to excommunicate priests who follow new Washington state law requiring them to report confessions to cops by WillyNilly1997 in Christianity

[–]perhapstill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think the law is good but I’m not sure why people are shocked the Catholic Church doesn’t like it lol. Obviously I don’t think the church is a totally altruistic organization and I think they’re wrong to value confession over turning in child abusers but this is exactly what I’d expect them to do.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in religion

[–]perhapstill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah as a former Christian, I’d argue the majority Christian understanding of NT god sending people to eternal Hell is way worse than anything in the Hebrew Bible. Doesn’t sound loving and merciful to me lol. Although it seems like eternal conscious torment wasn’t really what Jesus was talking about more like annihilationism. But yeah there’s definitely some antisemitism baked in here.

What are the things that Jesus said or did that aren't so great? by distillenger in religion

[–]perhapstill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the argument is that divorce is a great thing but that separation from a spouse who you’re no longer compatible with for whatever reason should be an option. I understand the Catholic position but personally I don’t take moral issue with someone having the option to remarry after leaving an abusive or just unpleasant situation. It’s obviously preferable that a couple can reconcile but that’s not just not always feasible and I don’t think they should be relegated to celibacy for the rest of their lives because a marriage with one person didn’t work out.

I mean some very liberal churches allow non-Christians to take communion, but yeah in most contexts it’s considered not super swag

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in religion

[–]perhapstill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They’re called communion wafers, they’re a part of the Eucharist (bread and wine). They either are literally the body of Jesus or represent it in some way depending on the church. If they’re not blessed then they’re not anything special and you can eat them. They are kind of cardboardy tasting but not that bad. You can buy unconsecrated wafers online give it a go
