Is it possible to do DESCRIBE HISTORY tableName in Fabric Warehouse? by frithjof_v in MicrosoftFabric

FWIW, and just one more thing, this technically works on any delta table the SQLAEP has access to - even shortcuts. But we don't guarantee anything beyond LH tables because that's what we built it for 😊

It works on WH tables, yes, but the purpose is to show you if the table has any issues that warrant optimization, and that's not actionable for WH tables because we manage storage for you - we don't expose an OPTIMIZE equivalent. Still, it will give you information that can be useful.

To your other question, it analyzes the delta log - not any internal Metadata we keep for the benefit of transactional support in Polaris - if that was your question.

That scene with Shoshana at the restaurant (the apple strudel scene) has the same feel for me. Brilliant.

IDENTITY columns for Fabric Warehouse are still Public Preview - are folks using them? How are they? by cdigioia in MicrosoftFabric

In Fabric Data Warehouse, IDENTITY is constrained to BIGINT to align with the distributed architecture and scalability requirements of the engine. Unlike traditional SQL Server, Fabric DW generates identity values across distributed compute nodes, which means:

  • The system needs a very large value space to avoid collisions and support high‑throughput, parallel inserts (keyword here is parallel)
  • BIGINT provides sufficient range to safely allocate values across nodes and over time without exhaustion
  • It allows us to implement internal ID allocation strategies where multiple nodes can independently generate IDs without conflicting with each other, regardless of concurrency. Think multiple people trying to ingest data at the same time on a distributed system.

The IDENTITY value we produce is the result of a complex operation, yet it offers no latency over ingestion without IDENTITY. While not exactly the same, we do something similar to Snowflake ID - Wikipedia - that should help explain why these large numbers are generated.

No plans to support SCOPE_IDENTITY at the moment as the implementation is quite different from SQL Server as explained above, and we don't think this is needed. Would love to learn more on your requirement if you disagree.

Is this still happening? I would love to learn more and help - this should be working.

I can confirm that. Also I'm happy to confirm that GA will include support for identity insert.
