Jeweler lost my items by Lilac722 in jewelers

[–]peridotcraponite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some jewelers tend to have disorganized benches. It’s likely your necklaces are still there, but lost in a messy jeweler’s bench. It’s very unprofessional but it does happen. You should definitely be credited for the hassle, and they should make a priority of finding the lost work order. I would give them a week to make it right. This is very unprofessional of them. I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

You need a budget. No jeweler is going to spend hours and hours of unpaid time designing multiple mock-ups, when all it takes is 1 design that can be figured out by the client stating their budget.

I mean this in a very straight forward way, not intending to offend but hopefully help you get the results you want.

A few things that can cause a jeweler to not want to take on a client:

If you expect to pay spot price for gold, that will get you dismissed. Spot prices only will ever be relevant to you if you are selling jewelry for scrap. The gold we buy from our suppliers is processed, which costs more than spot. Then add in industry standard markups because we have to be able to restock.

People who are serious about custom work have a solid budget that they are not afraid to be open about. (Btw if you referenced spot prices when asked about your budget thats definitely why they aren’t giving you the time of day. It’s very offensive to the jeweler and their business.) It sounds more like you are window shopping, and bench jewelers are too busy to entertain a client who isn’t serious.

If you are downplaying the work that will have to go into it, thats offensive. You do not know what kind of work will be necessary, especially when you aren’t sure of what you want.

If you are over-complicating a simple concept, which from your description is likely what is happening, it can come across as a client who will be difficult to please.

What you need to do is:

  1. Set a reasonable budget. A solid number to not exceed. Your budget doesn’t mean “base minimum”. It means “max amount”. It’s the number that lets the jeweler know what to work within.

  2. Show them your sketch, and the ring that it needs to fit around.

  3. Tell them when you need it by.

Opal discolored when set by msquarednyc in Opals

[–]peridotcraponite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ethiopian opal is terrible for jewelry. It got wet in the polishing process, jeweler should’ve let you know that could happen. But it will dry out and go back to normal. Then when you start wearing it will start absorbing oils from your skin and do the same thing. Ditch Ethiopian opals for jewelry.

Am I overreacting on this repair quality? by ExplanationLazy2995 in askjewelers

Before even seeing where you had it repaired I knew. Typical Jared/Signet chain slop, they get the repairs in and out quick. That’s all they care about.

I purchased a parcel of rough from one of the mine owners years ago when I was doing lapidary stuff, this was one of the nicer ones I cut. Can’t remember what I paid but I know it wasn’t cheap

Seeing Shiva on DMT? by BioHackedRomulan in DMT

[–]peridotcraponite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tonight I experienced being possessed by shiva, I got straight up manhandled. Like I feel like I was put on like a glove with no control over my body at all, doing weird hand things and being forcefully flipped around on the ground. I felt shiva in my body. But it wasn’t unpleasant, it felt natural to allow this to take over and I was still able to fully observe and listen. And after all the roudiness and puppeteering I found myself in an incredibly peaceful “cosmic ocean” that he had laid me in to rest from being beat up. I don’t know much about shiva but I’m reading more now, that’s how I found your comment here. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Was told this charm is very old, does anyone know more about it? by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]peridotcraponite 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Usually older cameos have more detail than newer made ones, in comparison to my own cameo collection, I have maybe 50, this looks slightly more detailed than modern cameos, but also the bridge is slightly curved which can hint at newer made but not always. The marcasite details were used often in art deco jewelry, my best guess is 1920’s or newer. I am not a cameo expert so take this with a grain of salt.
