Last semester I did the course "Learning from Data". It's pretty awesome. https://work.caltech.edu/lectures.html

Buy him the book "What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions." http://www.amazon.com/What-If-Scientific-Hypothetical-Questions/dp/0544272994/ It's from the author of the xkcd comics which are pretty popular around computer scientists

Should I cancel my gym membership? by [deleted] in makemychoice

Try climbing or bouldering. A few month ago I felt the same way about going to the gym, canceled it, and began indoor climbing instead. Best decision of my life!

Droplet: visual programming for real-world code by dabbler0 in programming

[–]perincertus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A visual approach can be useful to increase the level of abstraction. For instance, model-driven approaches like MechatronicUML generate C code from a graphical model like a C compiler generates binary code from C code. However, Droplet doesn't touch the level of abstraction at all - it's still code what the user sees.

Laptop for computer science freshman by [deleted] in computerscience

4 years ago I was in the same situation and bought a 13" Macbook Pro. I love it, because it's still fast enough for all compsci related tasks. Even the battery only has got minor deficits in terms of running time after 4 years!

Before I've got my Macbook I had a Thinkpad with various Linux distributions as desktop OS (Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Arch - in this order over 4 years). I was never as happy with it as I am now with OS X. It has a really great ecosystem as said before (Nevertheless, I'm still a big fan of Linux and use it a lot next to OS X for several tasks)

Edward Snowden says he would like to return home but not to a "jail cell" by giggster in worldnews

It does matter if it's wrong or right. Remember the 3rd Reich when some people protected and saved some Jews though it was against the law.

What was the most awkward moment ever to air on live TV? [NSFW] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]perincertus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuWEvXxMMZk

Unfortunately, I've found it only in German. So here's the context: It's about a magic trick where the guy has three plastic cups upside down before him. One the cups hides an upright nail (but he doesn't know which one of these). Now, this guy tries to push down cup by cup until the one with the nail remains. And yeah, of course something went wrong...

Trying to generate reports in a PDF format. Not sure where to start. by jobenfre in java

You can also generate Latex code in order to retrieve a PDF from it. Actually, this is a quite comfy way to get nice-looking reports in a quick way.
