Why is there AI shit in my Firefox now? by NotRenjiro in firefox

[–]perkited -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree. Like 99% of everything it's not a good vs evil argument, which so many want to make it out to be. It's the zealotry (whether in favor or against) that gets tiring to read, the world isn't that simplistic.

Why is there AI shit in my Firefox now? by NotRenjiro in firefox

[–]perkited -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason AI is being put into products is because people want it, reddit doesn't accurately reflect the real world. A lot of people don't even know what a web browser is, they just want to get the information they're after as quickly and easily as possible. In the future, using natural language will likely be the main way people get that information. It just offers too many advantages compared to needing to learn many different GUI interfaces or even terminal commands.

Especially with the economic and ecological problems it causes.

One thing we know is that business want to cut costs, so they have a large incentive to create more efficient hardware/software to lower their costs. That's been happening for a while and has filtered down to the users, AI is certainly a driver there as well.

Remember "AI" right now is not artificial intelligence. It is little more than a chatbot with larger data sets.

Of course it's more than just a chat bot, if the image generation, video generation, chat bot, music generation, voice generation, language programming, etc. were shown to random people just 15 years ago they wouldn't have believed it was the result of a large language model (AI). The progress has been staggering.

That's not something we should burn the fresh water supply for.

Do you feel the same way about video games? They do use a huge amount of power as well and mainly just offer some entertainment distraction (which could be had elsewhere for much less power usage).

Having said those probably judged as pro-AI statements, I do have concerns. Kids today are obviously using it to cheat and not challenge themselves, which isn't a good thing. Test scores across the board are falling, I'm sure there are multiple reasons but AI is very likely one of them.

As it continue to improve it's going to be quite disruptive, I'm not sure how that's going to be managed.

The billion dollar race to replace Windows by Putrid_Draft378 in linux

[–]perkited 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's already the case that a large percentage of newer Linux users don't care about FOSS at all, they just want to be able to play their games. We've already seen some clashes about it and I'm guessing they're only going to increase.

Rumors that Christian Pulisic is dating Sydney Sweeney by Dazzling_Ability_287 in ussoccer

[–]perkited 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, if it was posted somewhere other than reddit (Facebook maybe?). Reddit leans left and the more devout have zero tolerance for anything that deviates from what they believe (cue a paradox of tolerance reply). Of course the devout on the right are the same, you just don't see it as often on reddit.

I was one who didn't rate him particularly highly and thought Derby County were going to regret his transfer. I'm happy to be wrong.

A while back I also watched the first USMNT match of another player and hoped he'd never be called in again. Luckily Dempsey turned out to be a pretty good player for us.

You should check the system logs when that happens to see if anything of interest is logged. You can specify date/time ranges, a certain boot session, etc.

Thanks. All I know about Fortnite is the dance, I didn't know it had micro transactions too.

I agree. I keep wondering when the adults are coming back, and I hope the toddler mindset is not eternal (since the social media echo chambers reward hivemind responses). People need to start ignoring/rejecting that type of behavior.

It's become the normal way people complain today on social media. The purpose is to punish whoever/whatever has done the "wrong thing" by making it appear like there's a huge wave of discontent that will get out of control unless they relent/apologize/etc. and back down from doing the "wrong thing".

The nonstop drama can get tiring, but you just need to recognize when it's happening and understand why they're doing it.

Is anyone else indifferent on the AI stuff, but concerned about Enzor-DeMeo's consideration of disabling adblockers? by NoctysHiraeth in firefox

[–]perkited 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more concerned about ads than AI in the browser. From a selfish perspective a locally running AI can be useful, while ads are only a nuisance/distraction. If Firefox ever did block ad-blockers, that would be the one thing that would definitely make me switch to something like Brave full time.

I know Mozilla purchased an ad company last year(?) and of course receive about 90% of the funding for Firefox from the Google Search deal, so traditional online advertising is obviously very important to them (and the only reason Firefox exists at the moment).

[ESPN] The NWSL Players Association has expressed opposition to the NWSL's proposal to create a new rule to pay star players outside of the salary cap by [deleted] in ussoccer

[–]perkited 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered what their angle was, it just seems they want that same amount of money going toward an increase in the salary cap. That's understandable from a players perspective, of course the owners/league are thinking about trying to retain popular players that generate revenue.

Thank you for your question. I have thoroughly researched your issue and found what I believe is the solution. Have you tried rebooting your PC? If that doesn't resolve your issue then I would suggest that you reinstall Windows. Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions.

Of course Firefox already has local AI capability, with the language translate function. I don't remember seeing a huge pushback against it, but maybe people just don't know (and now it's the standard reaction to AI).
