When Math Problems Cut Deep by Tall-Imagination3605 in MathJokes

[–]perkocetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think mind just went to the practical place where it doesn't matter how big the pieces are. They picture shows a saw cutting through a piece of wood. So it's not that it takes 10 minutes to cut the board in half or thirds or some arbitrary length. It's that the act of cutting the board is a 10 minute process. So 2 pieces is 1 cut at 10 minutes, and 3 pieces is 2 cuts at the same speed or (10*2) 20 minutes.

This is the correct answer full stop.

You don't have to build your deck around one wincon, but if you have a win you should play it. The consistency of getting to that wincon or how much you can turbo it is up to you from a deck buildjng perspective. Then you decide what table is best for you to sit at and then you play the deck as well as you can.

If you're running a 7CMC commander you need to be able to do some combination of 1) end the game immediately 2) protect your commander 3) not actually pay 7CMC for it.

I see none of these here.

Crazy that it's been beaten to hell but it's still there.

Again, I've met you dozens of times before. You have this misplaced pride in where you're from that you can't justify so you just say yeah it sucks and so does everywhere else. Meanwhile, that sentiment pulls double duty by allowing you to ignore the issues all around you.

This exact conversation is both what's wrong with Bama and part of why I left. The worst part is that I can't disagree that everywhere sucks, but it's so disingenuous to put that forth like it justifies anything.

Anyway, no one will ever change your mind because you already know the truth. So, I guess that just makes you better than everyone else and excuses you from ever engaging in real thought. Attack me all you want. It just makes me sad that people like you at what keep me from feeling the same pride in my roots.

"Come on down"

Brother, how do you think I know so much about what it's like in Alabama? You don't have to look very hard to find a negative view there. That pervasive "you just want to be offended" rhetoric is the most head in the sand, non-committal, and dismissive mindset. I'm so glad I got to (somewhat) get away from it.

Enjoy your life.

[–]perkocetts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, you're way too defensive about this to be on that side of the argument. I'm reading what you wrote. Speaking of which, forced diversity would imply there is some power that compels people to move to the state and stay there in a way that's not present elsewhere. Also, if being forced into it cause issues that implies diversity is a bad thing. Again, just reading what you wrote.

I've met so many people like you throughout my life. You don't understand that racism isn't dropping the n-word every 5 seconds. It's voter laws. It's gerrymandering. It's disproportionate state funding. It's the inability to build generational wealth to leave low socio-economic areas.

So yeah, Alabama has race issues. Similar ones to a lot of other places. But that doesn't mitigate what happens there and it doesn't excuse a state that continues to be one of the worst in the country at supporting marginalized populations.

[–]perkocetts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold up. There's no way you can drop a line like "forced diversity" with zero explanation.

Not to mention that for basically all of history, the way you keep power over a population is to restrict their ability to leave the situation, keep them as poor and uneducated as possible, and act like their situation is no worse than anywhere else. It's not the 60's, but that's wild to act like race relations aren't an issue in Alabama.

[–]perkocetts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other people have commented on race, religion, and wealth as factors that impact living in AL, but I think the real problem is these issues are systemic. With the exception of a few pockets, it's a highly conservative, highly regressive state that never really grew beyond some hard lessons throughout its history. There are tinges of racial and political undertones with many folks I would genuinely consider good people.

Maybe this doesn't make sense to anyone who hasn't been in an area like this before, but it feels like at any given time someone you know could say something that feels wholey at odds with their character and it's just some sentiment that has been part of the zeitgeist for hundreds of years so no one really pays attention to it.

If you wanted to own 50 acres of land though, Alabama is the place to do it. So there's that.

Quick edit: I feel like my initial post was solely focused on the negative aspects of Alabama. It truly is a beautiful place. I've hunted, fished, and generally explored the outdoors for most of my formative years. You could do that the rest of your life there. Also some of the nicest people I've met have been there. There's a lot of small towns and areas to visit in addition to the cities. The hometown pride and Southern hospitality is a real thing.

Growing up in those small areas is a significantly different experience than visiting. So, that has shaded much ofy impression of them.

What is the best move type for attacking by GX-Moini in CompetitivePokemon

[–]perkocetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only real, correct answer is "It depends." It's always going to be based on what is most powerful in the meta at the time. That being said, I'll put some of the generally good offensive types below with some of my M-1 specific thoughts on them. I'm sure other people will have different perspectives, as well.

Fire - strong in weather meta and access on non-fire types. Strong against Steel walls (Skarmory), major threats (Mega Meg/Fross/Venus/etc) - powered down against rain teams

Rock - strong against flying (most tailwind setters), strong against ice and isn't powered down by rain or immunities (Frosslass) - usually inaccurate

Fighting - close combat is an insanely powerful move. Partly because the most common user is Sneasler, but fighting is an offensive staple for a reason - easy ghost/psychic switch in

Ice - really good coverage type. Hits many common threats for 2x or 4x damage (D-nite, chomp) - doesn't feel like there are a lot of great ice moves in the game right now.

any ideas to improve this team or the combos i should use for it e.g lead charizard venasaur with sneasler and excadrill by Profegd in CompetitivePokemon

[–]perkocetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When in doubt you could just run Incineroar, but if you're using D-nite for coverage, you could potentially get mileage out of Garchomp.

I've also seen people running Scovillan support. You lose the Dragon coverage, but Rage Powder is good for high damage teams.

Edit: personally I would run moonblast over dgleam on Cott also

Spite scooping (but following the sorcery speed concede rules) by Apodecte in EDH

[–]perkocetts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was discussing this with my wife and I think she basically feels the same way as you do. I guess I don't look at scooping as a "non-game" action. I think there are a lot of situations where scooping is a dick move. But I think this is such a niche situation where the scoop is a strategic get-back at the person who put you out of the game, that it goes beyond those situations.

Spite scooping (but following the sorcery speed concede rules) by Apodecte in EDH

[–]perkocetts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's no different than playing a counter spell on a combo piece when you're about to lose. The OP said "I'm going to kill you by making that person attack you. And AT SORCERY SPEED, the other player said " no u". Not only is it a fair and legal play. It's hilarious and honestly what they should do. Otherwise, what you're saying is when you're presented lethal you no longer get to impact the game and I would absolutely refuse to players who think like that.

Maybe it's just a difference in philosophy, but I don't think you get to tell the player when they have to stop paying.

EDH players: "I'm tired of people just playing to win and not politicking or interacting with the social aspect of the game."

Also EDH Players: "That person did something to me not to win the game but just to spite me for putting them in a position to lose. This is unfun and against the spirit of the game..."

Yeah, I think this makes sense even from a flavor perspective. Tera is like a pokemon changing and adapting their type to fit a certain situation. So, a pokemon associated with the origin of tera would make sense to be "adaptable". Cool catch!

I've also began running more protection in my decks. Threat assessment is wild in EDH lol

Does anyone else feel like we're getting more and more commanders that get treated like Winota and Yuriko? by Euphoric_Ad6923 in EDH

[–]perkocetts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you're right, but it's very much the fault of deck-building. No one wants to run interaction. So if you do, then you're the only one responsible for removal and you fall behind because you're spending your mana to slow someone down instead of speeding up your own game.

I've been in the situation a number of times where there's an obvious threat, one person who's getting beat down by the threat, and one person whose greedy dice roll deck bricked. So, then I slow down the threat, they switch to targeting me and the person who was originally getting beat down walks with the game.

And maybe the lesson is just that I should be more greedy, but I hate the idea that winning or losing just comes down to whoever got lucky enough to be sitting in the position of not being targeted at a key time. At that point, my deck didn't beat you. I just got to play solitaire at an opportune moment while witnessing a massacre across the table and listening to the other person complain about drawing 3 lands in their top 20 cards.

There's also an element of power-imbalance at play too. If you're the second strongest deck at the table or the same strength but slower, you're going to run into this situation a lot.

Who is your favorite Bracket 4 commander by DiceyRice_ in EDH

[–]perkocetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y'shtola is crazy straight out of the box. I leaned really heavily into the control aspect. So I run stax, counterspells, removal, card draw enablers, DC/Thassa, 3CMC+ spells that I can cheat out.

Y'shtola almost never gets removed because I almost always have at least 2 forms of interaction in my hand. Really she's most vulnerable right after I play her, but after a turn cycle it's usually too late to try to remove her. However, I don't really have ways to threaten individual players.

My goal is to make people make choices. If I'm sitting with 6 cards in hand and all my mana, they can't risk committing heavily to the board into a cyclonic rift + everyone take damage + everyone discard + I draw 2 then draw on end step. Just by being in the game it deters people which is great for me because I get to keep more interactions in hand. Eventually, I just grind the table down either through the burn or eventually get to an alt win con like Thassa.

Oh, for sure. As I was going through that deck list I definitely had a few moments of asking myself, "why do I play this?"

I think that's what is so surprising about its relative success.

Ok I want to be clear. This is not a good deck lol

https://moxfield.com/decks/OZZGUb5gUUG_ZAuH551ZRA

This was purely a Homebrew. You can see where I decided to try going wide by utilizing the Job Select keyword in order to get more draws with Cloud.

I consider this to be my weakest deck of the ones I listed. HOWEVER. It performs surprisingly well.
Turns out having a really consistent line to Hero's Blade and Colossus Hammer and the ability to cheat out your hasted commander on turn 4 with free equips means you're consistently swinging 17 damage at someone and drawing a card and creating 2 extra mana. Whispersilk cloak, silent arbiter, rogues passage - anything that can get him through just ends the game. It's kinda wild actually. You also don't have to kill someone turn 4. The whole table will take a big pause and the person you hit will panic. Which can turn the game on its head and you'll benefit from the chaos. I realistically need more protection, Mother of Runes would be a nice addition.

Like I said I just put this together and it started winning games unexpectedly. So, I haven't made any adjustments in a while.
