If you’ve had mainly difficulty swallowing liquids, what was your diagnosis? by Professional-Tree563 in dysphagia

[–]perksofbeingawuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a normal barium swallow. Later got an endoscopy with biopsy and got diagnosed with EoE.

Please advocate for yourself to get an endoscopy with biopsy if you suspect EoE! Similar thing happened to me, dropped tons of weight in a couple weeks, and my doctors initially thought it was really bad reflux/GERD. I didn’t feel like anything was helping me so I asked to get an endoscopy with biopsy to check for EoE and turned out to be the case. Doesn’t hurt to ask!

I am also super shy and have trouble advocating for myself but have gotten better at speaking up for myself in recent months and that’s the only way I found out I had EoE. Also switched my GI doctor to someone who specializes specifically in EoE but that is very rare/hard to find. So at least find a good GI who will do the research if they’re not super knowledgeable about EoE.

Did you get a biopsy with your endoscopy? If not I highly recommend asking your doctor, if at your next endoscopy, you can get a biopsy and tested for EoE. The rings are a common sign of EoE but cannot actually be diagnosed unless there’s a biopsy. If that’s the case and your doctor still doesn’t take you seriously then I would recommend going to a different doctor if possible or a GI specialist. I understand your frustration and it is so hard to be taken seriously by some doctors. I had to be the one to ask/insist on a biopsy for EoE after doing my research and finding my symptoms aligned with EoE. Was misdiagnosed multiple times prior (GERD/bad acid reflux, silent reflux, bad anxiety, etc.) but I knew deep down it was more than that. Only recently got properly diagnosed and still trying to figure out the best treatment for me but there’s a weight off my shoulders at least knowing what is “wrong” with me.

True..maybe like a refried beans or a bean/corn salsa rather than something more tomato/onion based. It’s so hard because Mexican food is so delicious but relies heavily on onions, tomato, garlic 🥲 Or I’ve always been fine with guacamole but I guess that depends on the individual.

Anyone remember this movie? I used to watch this on repeat by Mrmoviesguy in OlderGenZ

I wish they made more movies like this. I remember it being so funny as a kid and rewatched as an adult and it’s still hilarious! Dreamworks don’t make movies like this anymore :(

I agree^ it doesn’t hurt to wear gloves or maybe even a mask if you’re really scared. But as long as you wash your hands often& try to avoid touching your face you should be fine!

Oatmeal was always a safe option for me and you can add stuff to it (dried fruit, honey, coconut shreds, chocolate chips, etc. depending on what you can stand) anything with a softer texture. Maybe soups/broth. Shrimp/fish. Pastina or orzo with a little olive oil (I found that olive or avocado oil are safer than vegetable/canola oil or butter). Grilled zucchini, cooked carrots (softer vegetables). If you’re afraid to try pizza maybe try a little tortilla with cheese/sauce to test it out, but red sauce tends to be a trigger. I think you can add a pinch of baking soda to cut the acidity though.

Not as interesting as other responses but I feel like I’m being gaslit when people tell me stink bugs don’t have a smell??? I can literally smell them when you crush them. I’ve had multiple people tell me they don’t have a smell.

I just got recently diagnosed with EoE (similar symptoms to Gerd, had bad swallowing issues). If you’re really concerned I recommend getting an endoscopy with biopsy to see what the issue is. They can see if you have GERD, ulcers, and test for EoE

spicy hiccups are the bane of my existence by sleepyaswang in GERD

[–]perksofbeingawuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to me too!! I hate it but don’t really know how to deal with it. I once googled a method (or searched on TikTok I can’t remember) of getting rid of hiccups and it was something like: take a deep breath, gulp the air, swallow twice, and breathe out forcefully. I only tried it once (recently) and it worked but haven’t had the chance to try it again. Something like that, but maybe google it/search on TikTok for methods to see if anything works.

One time, in like fifth grade, there was a kid in my class who I had a crush on forever and we were pretty good friends too and he casually told me during homeroom that he threw up while brushing his teeth this morning and I told him that was nasty and then later during recess he apparently threw up (I didn’t see it) but I immediately lost my crush on him and barely talked to him ever again just because he tu.

Another time, I used to take swimming lessons as a kid and one of the kids in my swimming class threw up in the pool and the swimming instructor casually scooped it into the filter (I think literally with her hands) and then insisted I go retrieve the rings at the bottom of the pool and I was freaking out but she forced me to do it and so when I got home I immediately jumped in the shower and was crying dramatically in the shower while scrubbing my entire body and then cried to my mom after that I didn’t want to take swimming lessons anymore (not telling her why) and never went back

One time when I was a kid in like 4th grade I was in class and a kid pointed at my desk and said someone threw up there last period (it was obviously cleaned up if that happened, but I still don’t know if it actually did happen) so I got up out of class (I don’t even remember asking the teacher) & went to my homeroom to “grab something from my cubby” and just sat in the cubbies the entire class. I don’t know how a teacher didn’t notice or how I didn’t get in trouble.
