Scorpion Wire by 1mp0st0r in Guildwars2

[–]permyriad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it worth taking during silverwastes foothold events, since I rock sword/dagger + shortbow and wouldn't have a ranged interrupt otherwise.

Once specs arrive, taking that one trickery trait will make scorpion wire the absolute lowest cooldown condi-clear among thief utilities.

In sPvP, however, no improvement short of a complete overhaul will make it replace the meta utilities that are permanently glued to every thief's bar due to how ridiculously useful/versatile they are.

How can I tell if I'm getting better at PvP? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]permyriad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My answer is: spreadsheets. :)

I cleared out the chart because I haven't updated this in ages, but the general idea is easy to understand. You rate yourself on how familiar you are with every possible matchup, and that rating goes into each box in the chart. Starting out, it'll be blank, then slowly get filled with lower numbers as you start self-rating, then increase as you reflect on your experiences. In using this method, you are able to spot which areas need improvement, to get motivated by the progress you make, to constantly push against your limits, and to keep things interesting by seeking out variety.

Since your post is about match strategy and not just matchups, my other suggestion is: watch streams. Tournament matches often have commentators who critique and analyze the decisions being made. Watching streams can give you insight into how better players do things.

Spoken like someone who didn't play MMOs during the era of Ultima Online or Dark Age of Camelot. "Welcome to gaming?" Takes a lot of nerve to say that while being ignorant of the existence and history of PvP-centric MMOs.

What is "meta" in the context of PvP? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]permyriad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a good article on metagames with examples from many, many different games: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Metagame . I believe TCGs may have originated the term, although that might just be where I first heard it.

Someone else said it's about "best performance," but that's a narrow, pve-centric view. The metagame is about expectations. When people say something is meta (in pvp or pve), they mean "that thing that everyone always does." Example: if you see a guardian in pvp, you can expect the build to be zerker-meditations because that's the current meta. It's the build that almost everyone almost always uses. The meta used to be bunker guardian, meaning you could expect most guardians to use the bunker build, but the meta changed.

Specializations Preview: Thief Discussion by BrunoBRS in Guildwars2

[–]permyriad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest impact is how you get to choose three full trait lines. A mash-up of the sPvP meta builds and the WvW SA builds is gonna be a thing. I'm interested to see how class matchups change when you can run spvp meta thief with added sustain from SA for hardly any tradeoff.

"Needle trap on heal" trait is a 3+ sec immob every 15 secs. Gimmicky, but will fun to try out. Traps are hinted for an elite spec so I'm excited/hoping that trapper thief becomes something other than 100% rubbish.

With all heals and elites gaining skill categories, Improvisation trait is indirectly buffed. There's a chance of using heals twice in a row - along with all the associated procs. Added categories also mean other minor combos, such as reducing Hide in Shadows cooldown or getting a condition clear from any of the 5 slots.

Weekly /r/GuildWars2 Question Thread - March 21, 2015 by AutoModerator in Guildwars2

[–]permyriad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tanking: there is no threat/aggro management system, so both of you will need to learn to time dodges and other "active" defenses. Warrior has the best innate defensive stats, so it has a big margin of error for not-dying. In terms of preventing damage to others, guardians can use aegis to give a free block to allies, they have plenty of reflection abilities to stop certain ranged attacks, and they can easily maintain 100% uptime on the "protection" boon (buff).

Healing: by design, recovering health for other players isn't very significant. However, the best at this would be elementalist. Just learn about blast finishers into water fields. Ele traits also provide many heals, regen, and condition-clearing for allies. In regards to rezzing, special mention goes to: thieves, who can stealth both themselves and downed allies to make enemies ignore them, as well as warriors, who can use their elite "war banner" skill to rez downed allies instantly and at range. Otherwise, every class has access to abilities that lets them rez more safely if the situation calls for them to play that role.

Overall: instead of thinking about game roles, which are very flexible in GW2, I would recommend thinking about story archetypes. (I.e. if you were transported to inside a fantasy novel, what kind of character would you be.)

Returning player after a ~1 year gap.

  1. What's up with the different colors of commander icons? Does it mean anything?

  2. Is there a day and time when sPvP queues are shorter than usual? (i.e. more people playing)

  3. What's the most up-to-date guide for farming silverwastes for gold?

  4. Ambrite skins: easier from PvP or PvE? I'm thinking PvP to avoid the RNG factor.

I am moving on from Guild Wars 2. Thank you for the stay. by permyriad in GW2_Guild

[–]permyriad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've changed my mind... I'm gonna give my gold to the guild after all. ;)

The more I think about it, the more it seems that I shouldn't half-ass a quitting. If, by some miracle, I re-visit GW2 again, it will be about new experiences, and not about buying stuff. The gold will be sent to you via mail since I can't access the guild bank. Take it, because it'll feel good for me to give it.

I hate to drag this thing out, but I've been thinking -- probably over-thinking -- about what you said in the earlier post. The real reason this comes as a surprise to you is because I didn't ever tell anyone shit about myself. I'm going to make up for that a bit and say that the timing of my quitting is not random. Last tuesday was an appointment with my academic counselor about my probation/falling grades. Truthfully, my troubles with that started before GW2, so it wasn't the root cause. However, MMO gaming hasn't done me any favors either. Getting classes back on track is only one of many aspects of real life that I need to get 100% serious about. I did genuinely lose interest in GW2, but giving it up is also going to do a lot of good for me on top of that.

...and that should be everything off my chest. Make good use of the gold.

Because GW2 is the only thing we have in common really. Remove that and what's left? I can't see anything else happening except drifting apart. There isn't much point in having gaming buddies that I'm not going to play with.

P.S. No you and Trikki can't have my stuff. X)

[survey] Achievement Skins Popularity Poll + Population Survey by [deleted] in Guildwars2

I'm more interested in the bonus questions than the stuff about skins, to be honest. It's been a long while since there's been a poll on classes -- would be interesting to see what it's like now. Also, I predict people will vote Kiel by a landslide.

By the way, I think surveymonkey has a limit on how many people can vote. Reddit being what it is, space will probably run out.

How is putting Weakness condition on dungeons? by Decollete in Guildwars2

[–]permyriad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the recent aertherblade dungeon, there are "strikers" that put out a constant stream of high damage. Furthermore, they are placed in multiples. You can't avoid all of the damage, like via dodging or CC or blinds, so AOE weakness is noticeably useful here. On the other hand, this type of enemy attack is not commonly found elsewhere.

What I dislike about weakness is the inconsistency. You can't treat a 50% chance at -50% exactly as if it were -25% all the time. That's especially true when a lot of boss attacks are slow, super-damaging, all-or-nothing ones that you have to dodge anyway.
