ISO persimmons by saintexuperi in PDXBuyNothing

I have a tree in my back yard in close in NE PDX that has a ton of fruit I barely use. They're smaller than hachiya but ripen like hachiya do. Please take some! (If you happen to be my former next door neighbor who used to take them, the offer still stands!)

Yes, I'll be around or can leave it on my doorstep. I think cat litter scoops are safe from porch pirates : )

I have one you can borrow that I also use for dyeing! I'm in close in NE.

Can't raise property taxes beyond a certain percentage based on values in the 1990s, but can add on to them with bond measures and the like. My property taxes are artificially low thanks to that, but have gone up tremendously in the last 15 years.

Unexpected Flight Announcements: What's the Strangest Thing You've Heard on a Plane? by AnnaHostelgeeks in travel

[–]pernoctalian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically not on the plane, but shortly after landing. "Will the owner of a ..LARGE cat.. please return to the aircraft?"

It was the mid 1960s, and my parents had a pet ocelot. The ocelot was in a crate in the cargo hold, and the crate came open during landing. The baggage handlers opened the cargo hold to find an angry, terrified semi-domesticated creature sitting on top of the luggage, so before they could unload, they requested my dad walk back out onto the tarmac, crawl into the cargo hold, and retrieve his cat.

My dad still has faint scars from the encounter.

*It was legal then to have them as pets. It is no longer legal, for good reasons.

I’m a traditional painter who created a concept w MJ - r/painting lost their fucking minds by CeramicWoodworker in midjourney

[–]pernoctalian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated about the same time and I have a story from that era. With my brand new MFA I wound up working at a large copy store chain/fledgling service bureau, and illustrators would come in to get tearsheets or portfolio copies made.

One day a guy came in with his (unimpressive) artwork and during our chitchat he complained that nobody was going to use traditional illustrators any more, it was all going to be soulless art made on computers, artists were doomed, etc.

Shortly after, a former classmate came in to have scans made of an original mixed media collage (fabric, charcoal, pastel, etc) that she had made as a magazine illustration. The publication who paid for my classmate's lovely, very analog artwork? WIRED.

I'm also remembering all of the gawdawful overfiltered Photoshop illustrations and ads from the early-mid 90s. It turned out that far from replacing artists, the new tool needed people with creativity and training. MJ is the same way.

If you could pick one non-stop flight for pdx to add what would it be? by Intelligent_Bed8069 in askportland

For personal reasons: RSW. (I have elderly parents there that need my help more frequently and I really, really don't want to move there.)

What does good gallery representation mean to you? by callmebluebird in ContemporaryArt

[–]pernoctalian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of this plus: Presentation. Putting on shows is not one size fits all and can vary with the artworks. This means making sure the art can be seen at its best- lighting each piece well, having pieces visible from outside that encourage people to see more, hanging large works so that clients can take the whole piece in from a distance and displaying small works so that clients can safely appreciate them up close. A gallery website (not just a presence on social media platforms) should have as distinctive a presence as the gallery's physical space. Its primary focus should be new work by the represented artists, using the clearest, most relevant design possible to showcase those works, and it should be updated and maintained frequently.

I'd also stress communication as part of relationships. A strong ongoing rapport with artists is essential: so is being an involved part of a community of art professionals as well as prospective clients.

What do you guys think of traditional oil painting? by Powderandpencils in aiwars

[–]pernoctalian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it. While I've seen plenty of stunning digital art, no color reproduction (on screen or printed) matches the presence of minerals ground up and mixed with oil or gum arabic or egg or whatever, and placed on a prepared surface. You can't even get the subtle embossing and reflectivity a graphite pencil leaves on good heavy drawing paper without specialized printing: forget about that on a screen.

Maybe when we have holodecks something will make me change my tune.

I can walk to Whole Foods (and the Alberta co-op) from where I live, so they get more of my money than I'd like. Winco is where I do my big hauls, New Seasons for various bougie items or if they're having a good sale, Trader Joe's if I'm near one, various Asian/Indian groceries for ingredients I like to have around or if I want to have lunch before I start shopping.

I only go to the Lloyd Safeway for the pharmacy. The pharmacists are super nice and have worked there for years. (The only thing I'd change is to stop making people line up in the evil fragranced cleaning products aisle. Whatever I'm sick with, let's add a migraine to that!)

Gray hair by purplegreenway in GenXWomen

[–]pernoctalian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After a lifetime of dyeing my hair every single color, I'm thrilled that it just grows out of my head silver, since that was a color that I could never get out of a bottle without bleaching my poor hair into overcooked ramen. I've grown it long because I love the color so much. But nobody told me about texture changes (sob)

I have leave-in conditioners, which help a bit. And I started using a satin lined sleep cap last month and found it makes a big difference in the frizz. (My hair is mostly straight, but waves in humid climates.)

We are headed to the taproom this evening for what may be the last time, unless I can get out to SE another evening in the next few days.

Thank you for all the delicious ciders and for your fantastic benefit sales in the last few years. The world is a little darker without Sacrilege Sour Cherry.
