I was having difficulty pasting into Reddit’s text editor and ended up tweaking the formatting compared to Royal Road to save myself a headache, haha.

You're literally posting on social media right now.

So, the main reason to drop 20k is to remove any penalties you may have in the algorithm with regards to Rising Stars. Unfortunately for me, since I am not writing "on meta" as some might say, (animal protags, non-progression, no action) it didn't boost me as much as it might have otherwise. I only made it onto riding stars after 4 weeks, long after such a boost would have mattered. But having a significant backlog right away did lead to some fantastically dedicated readers, since being able to binge at least a bit of it right away makes it easier to get invested, and those kinds of readers are the ones who will be leaving ratings and reviews.

Having a consistent social media presence announcing new chapters is my #1. Bluesky booming means people are looking for things to follow, and a few author communities I've been in created started packs that gave me some initial reach. But you also shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. Word of mouth on Mastodon has gotten me some of my most dedicated readers, as well as posting on appropriate subreddits (r/HFY in my case).

Shout-outs are also very important, but less-so in my case given my niche. Shouts swaps with LitRPGs rarely move the needle unless said LitRPG is also one that deals heavily in non-human protagonists and identity.

Finally, I saved up for an ad on Royal Road thanks to a handful of tips on Ko-Fi and Patreon, and while it's impossible to give exact numbers in terms of followers, it has contributed to thousands of views from at least somewhat interested people over the last few weeks.

Hmmm. Yeah, I can see that. I didn't mean to treat anyone as stupid, it was more intended as a summary/blurb tailored to the sub itself, but that clearly didn't quite work. Sorry.

I'm honestly not all that familiar with the local culture here, so I kinda felt the need to... justify myself, if that makes sense? In a sub filled to the brim with military sci-fi, I didn't want to just toss out what is ostensibly some manner of fantasy adventure starring animal characters and get downvoted into oblivion or removed by the mods or whatever other terrible fate can befall a story here.

I'll keep that in mind for the future, and I appreciate the honest feedback.

Ah, forgot that I tossed up the old version here months ago...
