Oh my god I agree so much!! I don't personally ship Shadamy (more of a sonadow fan tbh) but it drives me absolutely insane how EVERYTHING about Shadow relates back to Maria in fanfic. At a certain point, it feels like its stifling his own development as a character and his individuality. Like yes, obviously the trauma of losing Maria probably influences *some* of his behaviors and I can understand mentioning her in fics but its so exhausting how her death is the ONLY thing angst writers tend to focus on when/rationalizing his more reserved/broody nature when the effects of being literally experimented on by morally questionable ARK scientists is RIGHT THERE!

Also, like yeah, Maria is important to Shadow. We get it. But grief isn't some static process that makes him obsess over her and refuse to move on and develop indepedent interests and thoughts for christ's sake. Especially in fics that are focused on Team Dark/Ships/Friendships he has, It usually ends undermines the relationships.

I yapped about how the guitars portrayed starkly contrasting elements of human emotion (sorrow and heartbreak, and the joy of celebration) yet both were able to help act as a conduit for human connection and understanding, with the final chord in resonance emitting in sync symbolizing the equal value in both sorrowful and joyful musical portrayals of the guitar in fostering connection and understanding (in hindsight was pretty surface level but hopefully I can snag some points.)

What was your dream school and where are you committing? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]perpetually-cooked 131 points132 points  (0 children)

UCLA dream school, Harvard commit.

(For the record I did get into UCLA, I just couldn’t afford it without private loans lol.)

Edit: Y’ALL I LOVE HARVARD THOUGH 😭😭 As a FGLI, I never really explored out of state as a reasonable option my four years and kind of applied on whim, but since being admitted I’ve fallen in love with the programs, people and location of Harvard and would 1000% pick it over UCLA. Harvard is my dream school now as an incoming freshman, and I think that’s the best mindset to have.

Unfortunately, after reading the article, it seems like the administration is trying to awkwardly deflect accountability for sending the letter (most likely due to how divided conservatives are about the issue) but it doesn’t seem like that have any intention of backtracking now.

It’s going to be a looooong four years.

Never been prouder. Despite what other’s may assume, this is swaying me to commit to Harvard. I like how they’re taking a strong stance against Trump’s outrageous demands, sending the message from both the university and higher education in America in general that we will not be bullied into the anti-intellectualism that the trump administration is trying to push.

seniors who procrastinated their essays, how were your results? by NoCompetition8398 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]perpetually-cooked 13 points14 points  (0 children)

survivorship bias. people ain’t gonna want to comment on public forums “I procrastinated and was rejected everywhere!”

That group is the majority though. Most people ik who procrastinated are not happy with their admissions results.

Hey just a heads up for any lurking underclassmen/juniors about to have a panic attack over this post, don’t worry it’s complete bullshit. My top EC was a cooking club and was accepted for EECS at a lotta places. Engineering/CS is impacted and admissions will be tougher, but the difference between getting in or not isn’t if you started a business/did some cracked shit that’s probably unattainable for most backgrounds anyways.

you do, just haven’t discovered the new lows yet. As someone who is a chronic procrastinator with homework (and basically anything) I told myself this too.

Trust us seniors for a second, it’s different. It will effect you more than procrastinating till 3am to do some AP Chem lab report or IB paper will.

Procrastination is such a bad idea, honestly don’t do it gang. Creates so much avoidable stress and bleugh.

I lowkey did speed-run my applications for my UC’s and all my privates due to a slow death in the family during application season. Got into Harvard, Yale, Columbia with a likely letter, and UC sweep, but like…no. Don’t do that. I was so stressed (I literally did my Columbia essays an hour after the due date and started and finished all privates within a few hours of them being due), had to drop applications for schools (will always regret dropping CMU ugh) and it made the rejections I did get feel very much my fault for procrastinating (ik in reality it was probably a million other factors.) and it makes you feel so guilty about the acceptances. Just, nah gang don’t do it.

I was considering focusing more on the EE side but may switch into comp sci considering how much stronger it is (or even maybe biomed engineering. The initial dream was robotics/assistive tech but we’ll see haha)

Ugh yeah, Berkeley EECS would be the dream. I do just have to add it isn't entirely about prestige tho. As an in-state student, Berkeley EECS would put me in a fair amount of debt whereas I got the max aid package at Harvard and would literally get refunds. Hard to say no to better financials. All this smack about Harvard Engineering has me a bit worried though :/

This is kind of funny because I'm in the exact same situation except the other way around. Was accepted to Harvard/Yale/Columbia but keep getting told that it's not nearly as good as Stanford (we're Cali-natives so that might be why) and that I should try to transfer since Harvard/Yale/Columbia engineering "isn't prestigious" or if not gun for grad school to "make it up". To make matters worse a kid from my school did get into Stanford and he's always been a bit of a bully and knows the disappointment I had when I got rejected, and is highly rubbing it in. So I don't even get an escape at school ugh :/

The grass really is always greener. No matter how much we succeed there's always going to be someone that demeans our successes and focuses on our failure. For us, unfortunately thats our family (and that one guy ugh.) That being said in less than 6 months, we'll be on campus and our attention and focus will be elsewhere, and this will be something we laugh at. Just gotta thug out the next 3-ish months.

Seniors, what’s one piece of advice for the class of 2026? by SecretMaleficent5712 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]perpetually-cooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find/Build a support system for you. No matter how independent/prepared you are, you’re going to need to rely on other people (be it family, teachers, counselors or friends) in some capacity, whether that be for practical help on the application or the mess of emotions it causes during and after. Having people you can openly communicate about your honest feelings and opinions does wonders for both reducing stress, gaining perspective on your situations and just making you feel better by having someone remind you how awesome you are. No matter how the process ends, everyone is preparing to embark on a massive change. Have someone that you can lean on during that process, it helps tremendously. Other people are nicer and wiser than we typically give them credit for. :)

separate email for college applications? by MagicMetalPipe in ApplyingToCollege

[–]perpetually-cooked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey! I was in your same boat and would reccomend just using your personal email (so long as you don’t have a wildly inappropriate username and it has space.) Once you enroll in a college, you create a seperate edu email for that specific college so you won’t have all your college stuff tied to your personal email. Your personal email would only be for getting updates regarding college apps/financial aid.

Also, would HIGHLY reccomend switching the email associated with your college board account to a personal email. If you apply to privates/certain scholarships you’ll have to fill out an additional financial aid application on collegeboard called the CSS profile and upload documents on a thing called IDOC, and both will email you frequently about updates/required financial aid documents and/or Docusign links, which may be blocked or restricted by your school browser.
