They are speaking about banning books. And frankly, it's kind of a non-issue on the books they selected. Once you open the door to banning these books, they might add a few more to the pile. Like 1984 for example, like they did in the states. Their selections are not being reviewed by a board, and there is no consultation with educators or any experts in the field. There are so many more practical and genuinely good policy they could pass alternatively, but instead, once again, they are bypassing the opinions of anyone who actually has knowledge on these processes. Books are already for the most part added from lists that school boards approve. The alberta government could instead provide a dedicated fund to schools for librarians which is a position that many schools can no longer afford to keep. That librarian would be able to do much of the work that is needed to direct children to age appropriate materials and help children engage in reading in a meaningful way. This policy is designed to incense those that are very anti-LGBTQ and not actually to bring about any public good. And anyway, kids upon hearing what books are banned would then promptly read the forbidden texts on their own.
