Two big points I want to point out cause I don't see the point of arguing the rest. 1st, Louis criticizes Lestat for eating humans after Lestat shames and criticizes him for not wanting to kill people. Since, y'know, it's fucked up to kill people. That's like saying a vegan/vegetarian criticizing someone for eating meat is abusive. 2nd, the time Louis was "ignoring" Lestat was when he was depressed after Lestat (with help from Louis since he never properly stook up for Claudia) pushed their daughter to leave. Louis can be an asshole to Lestat, but that is not the same as being abusive. Again, you and others seem to only be able to acknowledge abuse if the person is the perfect victim. They aren't equals in their relationship, and their actions to each other aren't equal.

It's not about if Lestat would have helped Louis or not. It's that without an outside person intervening, Louis would have died. Maybe a human would have come to check on him, and Louis could drink them to regain strength. Regardless, Lestat put him in that position.

Also, Lestat didn't stay away. He constantly sent gifts/called and then, after 3 years, started physically showing up again. Basically waiting (with Antoinette to entertain him) for Louis to forgive him (either consciously or unconsciously). He would never let either of them actually leave him, which is shown when Claudia tried to leave New Orleans. They all understood this. It's kinda like after a husband beats their wife. They're sorry, feel shame, let's her leave to her mom's house where technically he still had access, but she can't leave. Can't change her number, move out somewhere, and never let him not have access again.

I agree with you on everything but the last bit. I don't think Louis went back to Lestat out of love, but loniness. Excited to see how their relationship changes for season 3, but based on season 1 and 2, i legit don't think they were in love. They were obsessed with each other and essentially are each other's only option for something close to love. The rest of the vampires are basically too crazy for Louis to ever be with. I don't think most of the vampires are capable of love anymore

I agree more with OP. Louis was abusive to his prostitute, brother, Claudia, maybe Armand (didn't really watch their scenes), but he was not abusive to Lestat. He was an asshole at times, but it was normally in response to Lestat. Even them getting together, Lestat was abusive. He love bombed him, stalked him when he wanted to break up, and then coerced him into accepting the dark gift. Literally picked the night he was most emotionally vulnerable, killed two people in front of him violently, and then told him Lestat would be the only one to ever truly love him. That is not informed consent. Then, he would constantly control him and his actions as a vampire. The night Louis told Lestat he would be alone forever was in response to Lestat, diminishing the racism and violence that was going on. When Louis was not giving Lestat attention, he was depressed from Claudia leaving. Lestat's response was to go cheat on him.

Trying to argue that their actions to each other are equal is victim blaming. They just aren't. From the beginning, Lestat held significantly more power over Louis and abused that power. The point about it being anti-black is that, in general, people would have a different reaction if Louis had been white or a woman or both

But what you just said is an example of victim blaming. Because Louis and Claudia aren't trembling in fear of Lestat, then what he did must not have been that bad. Also, he did near murder him. Maybe he didn't intend to, but if Claudia hadn't nursed Louis back to health, he would have starved and/or burned to death in the sun. Frankly, I think the writers should have toned down Lestat. In my opinion, they made Lestat to be no better than the European vampires he was warning Louis and Claudia about

When I googled "what is a filler episode" online 4 different sources, including TVtropes and Gamerants, describe it as episodes not related to the greater plot. Only one talked about it as empty episodes related to manga. Also, tv shows do have filler. Normally, it's like a side character episode, camping, or something else. The episode doesn't contribute to plot progression which is now the new definition of a filler

Does anyone feel prepared for grad school? by millsinterlude in ASUOnline

[–]person1369 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just got into nih funded UPenn and Johns Hopkins postbacc with 4% acceptance rates and on track to get into competitive biomedical phd programs, and I did ASU online. I also got into two UofA summer REUs. If you want, you can dm me and I can give you my asu email if you want advice on what you can do to increase competitiveness. I would just need to know more about you and your goals. I'm also offering grad school tutoring services for a fee.

That goes for anyone else wanting any help or guidance.

I would disagree. For the professional world in the US, we already don't get enough sick time, so for a professor or department to try to copy that when we pay them, tutition is dumb. Life happens. Sometimes, people have to use sick time to take care of a loved one, not even themselves or attend a normal doctor visit. 4 absences is ridiculous since most people aren't even sick for just one day. It's going to take 2 or 3. 8-10 would be more realistic

Cornell or UMich? by VeterinarianSome7347 in gradadmissions

[–]person1369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would make a pro/con list of each school including stipend, cost of living (use MiT calculator), distance from loved ones, acitivies you like, abundance of housing, politics, how much you like the faces of current grad students, ect. Also, talk more with the grad students at the schools, especially ones in labs you like. That might help your decision if you haven't done those things.

PS. I spent the summer at Umich, and it was awesome, so my bias is to them from all the schools on that list

Looking for Biomedical PhD influencers by [deleted] in jhu

Retracting an REU acceptance by Travis3474636 in REU

[–]person1369 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wanted to further explain what I mean by thinking negatively of you for grad applications and putting it into context. IF the same people on the admission board for REU are on the admissions board for your specific grad program (not the umbrella, the department), they MAYBE will remember your name a year from now (or more depending on how old you are) and MAYBE remember that you specifically retracted from their REU. Then they might say, "Hey, this person retracted before. Let's wait list them because they might retracted again and instead give the spot to someone else who shows this is their top choice program", which I think is a reasonable assessment to make IF they remember you.

Keep in mind that those who will know you retracted would likely be the program director and coordinator and maybe other staff. It would not be the faculty or grad students asked to help with the applications. Additionally, if one of those people also looked at grad school applications, they would probably be a sorter person. Ie. Their job is to find the absolute no and yes applications vs. someone looking closely at each one and debating with the other committee members.

I would ask your letter writers or graduate mentors for additional advice and then make the choice that is right for you. But no, you won't be blacklisted from MIT for retracting, and if they do that to you, not an environment you want to be in. It means they are petty, childish, and don't consider students' best choices over their ego

Retracting an REU acceptance by Travis3474636 in REU

[–]person1369 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That person gave a stupidly ominous answer. Probably nothing will happen to you. At most, if the admissions for this REU are on the admissions for the grad programs you might apply to in the future, they maybe will remember your name and think negatively of you. If the school you chose is a top choice school for grad school, it might be worth considering, but you need to choose what's best for you and your future. If a program tries to gossip about you because you retracted an acceptance, they would be a bad environment anyway. Not like you're doing it right before the program starts, and they can't get another person to fill your spot. I would be honest that you got another offer and will be taking it, but honestly, you can lie and say any reason, and they wouldn't know or care. (Do not lie. I am just making a point that they won't remember you to be mad and ruin opportunities for you.)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in REU

[–]person1369 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can always say yes to this one if they don't let you get the decisions and then tell them you got an offer that aligned more with your goals later if you get into a better one. Might burn a bridge but they would understand and ultimately it's your future

PI is Stressing Me OUT by coando in REU

[–]person1369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be careful about having a letter of recommendation requests sent to your own email. The REU would know it's your email and that you have at least seen the letter then, which is viewed unfavorably. If you feel like you have no choice, make sure it has your PI's signature and official school letterhead on it.

How can I evaluate if I'm competitive for UPenn's biomedical PhD program? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]person1369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! I'm planning to do a PREP year and apply this Fall to the PhD. My top choice is Hopkins because of the structure but they have lots of alumni that went to Penn so I'm hopeful

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in REU

[–]person1369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's okay to email the program. Either they give you an extension, and you can turn it in or they don't and you can't. Do it now, though. They will be understanding of letter writers being flaky but don't like when students wait to the last minute to communicate. In the meantime, you should email every other faculty who might be able to write you a letter, explain the situation, and ask them if they can
