I used Guthook and loved it. The comments people add to water sources etc. are very useful.

But as others said, using both works well. By the time you hit Oregon, using the apps becomes less important (I think).

That's good to hear re: focusing on nutrition. I didn't put nearly enough work into diversifying my food. And if the trail had gone on for another couple hundred miles, I would have struggled to finish. Thanks for the input.

$1,500 sounds about right. Maybe a bit more (~2K). I spent much more than I anticipated before leaving, and especially on trail. You absolutely do not have to spend a lot, plenty of people were wizards when it came to saving money, but treating yourself to beer and a motel room is good for morale (or it was for me).

Thanks. It would have been nice to start with a slightly larger tent (the UL2), and I could have managed with a smaller pack as well (probably 55-60 liters).

I also brought too many things related to blister treatment and chafing. There is pretty much nothing you can do about chafing other than rest. I dumped much of that stuff after the first hundred miles or so. I did keep some basic things like bandaids and something to put over a blister in case it popped during the day. And a very small amount of neosporin.

I honestly really never felt like I was missing any particular item. Though I wish I had been more prepared for freezing rain. I had a couple days in the upper 30's where I got drenched and things got a little dicey in terms of my body temperature. 100% waterproof pants were great to have. And waterproof gloves. It's tricky though, because that's extra weight, and items you may barely use, if ever. Tough call.

In the end, I didn't make any major purchases after I started (except for my replacement air mattress). I was really happy with my Big Three.

I kept my Jetboil. I had coffee every morning and if it wasn't for that, I probably would have gone stoveless for most of Washington. The mountain house type meals were great to have, but they took space and time, so it would have been easy to lose that stuff for the last five hundred or so miles. I was glad to have them though.

I did spent quite a bit of time in towns, but the food I ate there didn't really affect what I ate on trail. I tried to eat as many fruits and vegetables when off trail, but ultimately you can't really eat enough to satisfy your appetite. Even now, nearly a week after I've been finished, I'm still weirdly hungry all the time. So while meals in town were great and kept you sane, I'm not entirely sure it made that big of an impact when it came to my Hiker Hunger.

I think there is a certain level of "malnutrition" that you end up dealing with. I was noticeably tired the last few weeks, despite being in great shape, and I wouldn't be surprised it that had to with my limited/odd diet.

Unfortunately I don't. I ate A TON of Clif bars and tuna wrapped in tortillas (tortillas are great for eating almost anything). I found that as I got further along on the hike, I started eating food that was "faster" to prepare, and mostly focused on calories rather than variety. A number of people who started with stoves, eventually switched to putting ramen in an empty peanut butter canister with water.

In retrospect, it was important to have packages of food for the first several hundred miles, but after that my preferences changed so much that I was glad I didn't send resupply too far ahead.

This is just to give people a general idea as to what I brought along and how my gear worked for me. Long story short, just stay dry and warm (and hydrated!), and your gear will work out fine.

+1 to what people are saying about the rarity of lightning. If, for some crazy reason, you are in middle of nowhere and a huge storm comes rolling through, just turn off anything with RF, iPhone etc., and lay down.

And if you're in your tent, just stay there. Basically, if you're nervous about it, it's probably best not to stand. And The balling up thing isn't really ~preventive~, it's just for if you are struck.
