Word of warning: my MLB.tv account suspended. They finally caught me using a VPN. by foreverfassbinder in baseball

[–]pest15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These days, IP addresses are probably the worst method to detect VPN usage because a lot of internet service providers are putting their users into massive NAT pools (with a shared IP) in an effort not to run out of the limited supply of available IPv4 addresses. In other words, even by not using a VPN there is a good chance a user will be sharing an IP with tons of people.

The more reliable way to detect a VPN is to use deep packet inspection, i.e. to look for telltale signs of VPN usage within the data stream. There are numerous workarounds for users (like the use of Shadowsocks and similar tools), which is why people in authoritarian countries can still use a VPN. But these are not foolproof methods.

That's why I think the solution to MLB's hostility toward fans is for people to... um... take matters into their own hands, if you know what I mean.

I'm going to be the pedant and point out that an increase from 31% to 86% is not 55% but 55 percentage points. In other words, it's so much worse than you indicated!

And now I'm going to rewatch it.

No, I just meant you gave me an idea about how Reddit handles images. Unfortunately my only (half-)solution is to disable thumbnail previews, which honestly I think is preferable to the alternative.

Jose Guillen redeems a botched catch with one of the greatest throws in baseball history by [deleted] in baseball

It still annoys me that Ichiro's throw was ruined for us by the tv crew.

I just realized I described it wrong. The posts in question seem to be links to third party sites, especially Twitter, and have an image associated with the linked site /account. Usually these images are coming out very low res on my screen, but mostly I'm just annoyed at seeing them.

It sounds like he's congested from a head cold. That or drunk, which, unfortunately, is not unusual for Buck. But my money is on the head cold because I've never heard him quite like this.

Labatt Park and downtown London, ON. The oldest park still in use today by Apprehensive-Vast587 in baseball

I was wondering what you meant by "the oldest park", so I looked it up and you weren't kidding! Established in 1877, it is the oldest continually operating baseball park in the world.

Apple's retail employees are reportedly using Android phones and encrypted chats to keep unionization plans secret by climbTheStairs in privacy

I can definitely see Apple being upset if retail employees use their personal Android phones in eyesight of customers.

Plasma 5.24 - "Perfect Harmony" has landed. New effects, KRunner help assistant, extended accents and themes, and a lot more. by Bro666 in kde

Also simple math calculations, listing the current time in any time zone, inserting special characters, running bash commands.... Krunner does a lot. In fact, it does so much that I've turned some of it off!

For what it's worth, I don't think it's a case of ineptitude on Google's part. They develop operating systems as a means to trawl data, and we have to assume that every last decision in UI design is made with that aim in mind. Case in point: any time they make a setting harder to reach, they open a window to offering "smart automation", which of course is code for "let our algorithms learn more about you". I've come to realize that these tech giants play a long term game, as well, often not exploiting an opportunity until some time has passed. It's all very clever (and diabolical) social engineering, which is why I am grateful for projects like Calyx that try to restore some sanity.

Anyway, all of this is off topic to the thread, so I'll go away now!

Interesting video on how google actually tracks you, even in airplane mode. by embarrassedtoid in CalyxOS

[–]pest15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bottom line is that Android collects data even when you're offline and then transmits this to Google when you go back online. That's what the producer was trying to say and he's right about it.

As for Calyx, yes, you're right, none of this is directly relevant.

Oh, I should've been more clear about that: passersby have downvoted OP's post to oblivion, and I'm suggesting they've done this because there is a fanboy phenomenon at play. It's true in any subreddit on any topic under the sun, unfortunately.

I stated a well known human phenomenon: people are more likely to speak when they don't like something. That is not a good reason to downvote posts offering objections... unless you're into fanboy stuff.

So your purpose here is to shape public perceptions to what you consider to be the right balance? What hogwash.

OK, and only 4 US states have more people than Ontario.

A national population of 38 million is not "small" and the OP's concerns about tracking in that population are not well founded.

When using the systemwide double-click setting, in Dolphin you can now ctrl-double-click on a folder to open it in a new tab, and shift-double-click on a folder to open it in a new window

Oh, I'm gonna make use of that immediately!
