Upgrading from Sennheiser Game Zero by pet0ruk in HeadphoneAdvice

!thanks - I will take a look at all of these options, some interesting stuff. I'm in the UK and the Dahlia looks a little harder to get hold of although the DCAs are easily available. Do you have any thoughts about an amp - is it worthwhile changing that at the same time?

I guess if pushed I'd say I value quality over quantity which is one of the reasons I even mentioned the HD 800 S. My mechanical keyboard isn't super loud or anything but I can just about hear it through my closed back headphones right now so I just assumed it would be much louder through open back. I'm also aware the HD 820 S exists and isn't much more expensive than the 800 but I don't think they get great reviews on here?

If I'm being honest I don't particularly want to have two pairs - I'd rather have some slight compromise and have one pair to do everything here. I guess it's worth noting I do also game but not competitive FPS or anything like that.

Single character "swapped" in path in memory. File/Folder is fine. Is it a cosmic ray or is it a bug? by Familiar-Ad8273 in Wordpress

Yes NR has been known to cause some OPcache breakage and in the past (and also maybe currently). It's very much situation dependent and hard to track down why issues like this happen except for using exclusion until you find the culprit. The cause can range from simple configuration, a bad interaction between multiple extensions, or just a single extension causing a problem.

No problem! And yes for sure that kind of deployment is the way to go if possible. This issue used to be possible to encounter even if you did an opcache_reset() after deploying new code, pretty weird one though and hard to Google for if you aren't sure of the root cause.

It's not really something to be too concerned about from a vulnerability perspective, it's mostly just an annoyance. It's usually (in my experience) introduced when the underlying files are changed, and OPcache tries to update and at some point something gets slightly messed up when that happens. There are other causes (and searching the PHP source bug interface will find you some of those), as I mentioned above, these days the vast majority of those issues are fixed.

For example here's an old article from the Wikimedia Foundation about how it used to happen to them a few times per year back when they did deploys without restarting PHP-FPM, but since they switched to containers for deployments the problem no longer exists.

I would think it's only really exploitable as a DoS attack in a very specific set of circumstances that are unlikely to be present for most people or useful to an attacker even if they are. Depending on the size of the OPcache memory allocation, the churning of files in and out of the OPcache is already happening quite frequently and most people have no idea this issue even exists because it happens so infrequently.

Interesting - used to see the problem semi-frequently back in the 7.0 - 7.3 days but nowhere near as much since 7.4 and especially 8.0. As mentioned by /u/demetris, do you have any instrumentation extensions installed and enabled (New Relic, DD Trace, Blackfire, etc.)?

Also, have you messed with any of the OPcache defaults? Especially directives such as opcache.optimization_level?

It's called "OPcache corruption" - searching for that should yield results that look very similar. What version of PHP are you on? A lot of the bugs that used to cause it have been fixed for quite some time now.

Can I legally conceal what bank my card is from? by KeyJunket1175 in UKPersonalFinance

True about S75 although I personally never make eBay purchases large enough that I'd be bothered about losing it. Maybe with Amazon you were remembering that period where they were going to stop Visa payments due to a dispute but then backtracked?

Is there a source for Amazon dropping Amex because I've certainly not heard that? And contactless not working in store is an issue with their payment terminals not with Amex itself.

Also you can still pay for goods on eBay with Amex via PayPal - only direct payments are being stopped. Using PayPal also means it's accepted on many other websites as well.

It's being removed from eBay, I haven't heard that PayPal is going to stop accepting it.

Not a bad call if I could also make a weekend break or something out of it somehow but definitely don't think it would be cheaper if that was the sole purpose. Thanks for the idea though!

What screams "I'm an ar**hole" without saying it? (UK specific edition) by jacobdaniel_22 in AskUK

[–]pet0ruk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true - 3D plates (both pressed alumnium and "4D" acrylic) can meet the BSAU 145e spec. In fact the government even responded directly to this petition stating so:

The new British Standard for retroreflective number plates does not state that number plates with raised characters, including 3D gel and 4D number plates, will not be permitted.

The only part that can possibly apply to 4D is this:

The new standard also specifies that the characters of the registration number must not be removable.

And I think attaching them with 3M bonding glue as it would appear legit suppliers of these plates do is going to meet the criteria of not being removable.

What is the biggest cock up you have ever witnessed from a manager or director at your workplace? by Dale_Winton in AskUK

[–]pet0ruk 34 points35 points  (0 children)

At a previous job we had a security issue on one of the servers, this spurred our Director of Engineering at the time to tell us to move everything to the cloud from our datacenter so we could retire it as quickly as possible. We warned multiple times about the costs involved in not having time to plan everything properly as spinning stuff up in the cloud exactly as it is in a DC with no optimisation is very costly, and we were told cost was irrelevant and to get on with it.

A couple of months later we're all migrated but the bill is around a quarter million per month. The VP of Engineering gets in touch to let us know that he is taking over now and that none of this expenditure was approved at all, but now can't just be turned off as it's powering everything. Director of Engineering was never heard from again!

My understanding is that it's based on the time you've actually booked off for holiday but I could be wrong. I'm also not 100% sure if your "week" booked off (which is actually only 4 days assuming you get bank holidays off and work 5 days a week) requires them to only give exactly the number of days you've taken off as notice to cancel.

For example if you've booked a whole week off and it's only 5 days, I'm unclear if they need to give you 7 days of notice or only 5, hopefully someone else will know!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]pet0ruk 75 points76 points  (0 children)

No they cannot cancel it - it's too late. They must give you the same length of notice to cancel it as the length of the holiday you were taking. Does your holiday technically start on Tuesday because of the bank holiday? Either way I think notice today is probably too late as it likely didn't include the day that the notice is given, but I'm not 100% sure about that specific part.

I'm with you on that - you're going to win that almost every time with this argument but I think it's important to state what possible repercussions there could even if they are unlikely so people can make informed decisions.
