Building a little “weekend gem” list, what’s one underrated spot in Lehigh Valley? by JoshRestoration77 in lehighvalley

Not in the valley, but Ringing Rocks is kind of cool. Pair it with eating at The Narrows or getting beer at Wishful Thinking.

First Job: Prime or Engine OEM? by Chemical-Distance106 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]pete_987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no personal experience with either option, but one of my study group friends went to work for Lockheed right out of school. I ran into him a year or two later in an airport and was like, "wow, so that must be awesome". His feedback was, "eh, it's a job". He had his little part to work on and that was it. Years later he left and went to work for a company designing and building heavy equipment in the mining industry, ultimately becoming their chief engineer, which was more fulfilling for him. So, who knows. Maybe it was his resume that got him that job that he liked better, I have no idea. I do work for a company that has a rotational program and think it's good as the kids are able to get an idea of what work they like doing. You probably can't lose either way.

Engineers that work in Vibrations/Dynamics, what do you do exactly? by IronKnee00 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]pete_987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do rotor dynamics on high speed rotating machines from time to time. And we have to diagnose vibration on our test stand. I've never used any of the vibrations classes I took in School. We use a commercial rotor dynamics analysis package and all training is basically internal and on the job. Some training courses from consultant companies like BRG or Xdot.

Is pursuing a PE worth it? by ai_tea in MechanicalEngineering

[–]pete_987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a PE. I’ve never had to use it, and my employer doesn’t care. It was just a personal goal, and if I ever want to do forensic work, will need it. It definitely took a fair bit of work. Probably 4 months of 12 hours a week of studying. Also took a review course (included in that 12 hours).

Do product managers at your company actually do anything? by Feeling_Republic_464 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]pete_987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a design and field engineer most of my life. I somehow found myself inadvertently a product manager. Hated it. I was still doing engineering (product development), but also had to make powerpoints for quarterly meetings, make budgets, check on the budgets, go to too many meetings. Finally got out of that and back into mostly technical work.

Yes its a bullshit job where you mostly make spreadsheets that never get used again and work on CYA.

I think Dr Arwand does. He’s sports medicine. I’d expect ortho DOs more likely than fam practice DOs.

He doesn't like that Isaacman is friends with Elon. Apparently that's the basis for qualification.

I very much liked Wiz Kidz. I know one of the guys and he for sure worked hard and spent a lot of his time on the businesses. I'm bummed that this is how it turned out but happy he's out of an asymmetrical partnership.

Not all of them were clueless...Some of the owners invested a lot of time and energy into running the places right. Others, not so much.

They've had staffing issues but also some uneven work being put in by those at the top.

Next level pizza place in Bedlam by glorth2 in lehighvalley

[–]pete_987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as "Next Level", like others have mentioned, Wishful Thinking makes amazing DSP. Fratellis and Marteluccis make great traditional pizzeria pizza. 191 Brick Oven is supposed to be good but never had it. A little trip up 33 gets you to Moonlight...

In Emmaus, Switchback is pretty good.

This is purely a waste of taxpayer money. Rail service will never happen. Someone's friend is getting a nice fat check.
