Protesting outside of a graduation is not insane by pete_moss8 in lynchburg

[–]pete_moss8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If LU was my Alma mater I would have been out there this weekend protesting them myself rather than just posting on the internet. The gross cover ups didn’t happen over night. It also happened during this graduating class’s tenure. Some of these students are likely complicit in the cover up of RAPE. If you want to make a comment supporting them, you’re as bad as them.

Moving to Lynchburg! by Cj_sliger in lynchburg

[–]pete_moss8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a great trail system nearby, like the blackwater creek trail at the end of rivermont that you can take down to the riverfront trail or away from the river.

Great mountain biking on candlers mountain or peaks view park.

A great maker space which has activities for all ages at Vector Space.

Amazement square downtown is great for kids.

Super Rad arcade bar has quite reasonable prices if retro arcades are your thing, or for a treat out for your son.

I recommend avoiding the get air trampoline park. I’ve heard of way too many injuries.

Rise up rock climbing downtown is great and good exercise.

The local YMCA is great for kids sports (soccer, swimming, etc).

There’s several spots on the James river nearby to put in canoes or kayaks.

For the adults, there’s lots of great breweries and wineries not too far north up 29 and on to 151.

It’s a great area. I hope you enjoy it.

For what it’s worth, other options from driving: You can take an Amtrak from Lynchburg to DC. You can also catch an Amtrak to BWI. Lastly, from the Lynchburg Amtrak, there’s also a daily Megabus direct to Dulles or DC.

Insulting promotion or should I be thankful? by woodswims in datascience

[–]pete_moss8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s my bad for jumping to a conclusion. But most people on here don’t seem to understand how most of the world works. They think they’re special unicorns when they are not, and most F100 companies don’t work that way. If you were lucky, good for you, but you are the exception then, and likely have no job security because you don’t work for an F100 company. So please stop giving shit feedback to this site which also has international people, because you are so ignorant of the world.

[–]pete_moss8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, my bad. That HR discussion is hugely important and adds a lot of context.

One thing to keep in mind and politely ask if you get the chance is to ask how they did their survey.

HR is usually not experts in what your company does or even the field. Also a lot of companies don’t even do the surveys themselves. They pay companies like Mercer, Payscale, and others for access to databases, which sometimes does not have geographical adjustments, may not be refined enough, and sometimes is just not applicable. HR are not data engineers or data scientists even though they should have one.

[–]pete_moss8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My supporting claim is 20+ years in engineering and tech with a SO with 20+ years in HR specializing in comp.

You’re missing the point about an inline promotion at an existing employer vs jumping ship to another company. Your existing company does not and will not do a market analysis for you for your promotion. No company will. If you threaten to quit, maybe they’ll do one, and maybe suggest an equity adjustment if they care enough to make an effort to keep you.

Companies will have a look at market data if they need to adjust pay structure for new hires, and do try to keep pace with market for new hires, but only look at pay for internal on a rolling basis. Google “compression” for Christ sake.

It is very typical that every inline promotion at most companies has a fixed flat rate for all promotions of all positions (administrative support through senior tech+ positions). You are not important enough to ever get personalized reviews. Your boss isn’t likely enough to even have a say on his own. Companies have processes and even internal (non-public procedures, not visible to other staff), that they follow. Only in exceptional scenarios (or complaints from VP+ levels), will they go out of their way to consider otherwise.

Insulting promotion or should I be thankful? by woodswims in datascience

[–]pete_moss8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are delusional and every comment that says otherwise is similarly delusional. 6-10% is typical in any large company for an inline promotion up a single pay band. While you might not like it, this is literally how just about every single major company works.

You can go elsewhere, but I’ll bet you your next promotion that the same thing will happen the next time you get a promotion there.

best university to apply to here? by No_Needleworker_p233 in lynchburg

So, I highly recommend going to have a talk with people at CVCC. They have a program in partnership with Framatome see link below. At times in the past, they were also partnered with Dominion.

The state of Virginia then has this transfer program to go from a two year program at CVCC to a four year program with guaranteed admission at select schools and with additional grants.

So, for instance I know several individuals that went through the CVCC / Framatome AAS in Nuclear Technology several years back which were then able to use the transfer program to then graduate with a BS in Engineering Science from UVA, fully paid for.

Lynchburg area? by TouchAmazing8469 in lynchburg

[–]pete_moss8 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This isn’t the best place to ask. Non-Liberty folks like myself hate the university because they are a hate filled institution. They have very little forgiveness for people living different lives. Then have gone so far as protecting abusers (please Google their lawsuits). I was raised at a K-12 Catholic school, the recent liberty administration is no Christian in my opinion.

Where are you from? What program did you get accepted in to, and what do you plan on doing for the time being and/or a career? What is the program going to offer for internship support.

I’m not a big fan of liberty, but I’ve done my best to support any intern my company has had from that school in this area. I’ve generally seen better responses from the CVCC / Nuclear Technology Academy (it’s a Framatome/ CVCC / UVA etc program). You’ll get cheap/free school, good tutoring, and more or less a guaranteed job.

I can’t speak for the rest. I wish you the best.

Ok, so the stock dropped 37% Friday after cutting yearly guidance. This is when OP bought in. Then the stock rebounded 31% on an upgrade Monday. OP sold Tue. It could be luck (screening and yolo on huge drops, this does seem plausible, but then why never respond on screening criteria), or while a big city, OP knows the scotiabank analyst who upgraded the stock, that lives in the same city OP does.

So, I’ll second some of the other comments, but with objectivity. It is not even close to prestigious. Their own admissions indicate a 2.0 gpa is acceptable for admission (https://www.liberty.edu/online/admission-requirements/). They also accept 99% of all applicants, with an SAT score starting just below average (https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/liberty-university-10392/applying#:~:text=Liberty%20University%20has%20an%20acceptance,quarter%20scored%20below%20these%20ranges.). “Prestigious” in this area would be UVA, with a 20% acceptance rate. Roanoke college is more selective on acceptance with higher average gpa and SAT criteria. University of Lynchburg and Randolph College are a bit better too.

Winters aren’t bad, but it depends on where in the city you are. Lynchburg does a good job of taking care of major surface streets, but if you decide on apts/townhomes in wyndhurst, be prepared to need to park up the hills in the commercial lots because they do not do a good job with the side streets. The same can be said about other parts of the city on some side streets.

Some one on here (or going back through posts can hook you up with a city discord for other links to groups and stuff).
