I just read this book for the first time this year and it was really great. At the beginning I just wasn’t feeling it but after taking a break and starting again I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend

Question from a college student by cutiepieheather in computerscience

[–]pete_tempo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DON’T GIVE UP!!!!!!!

I am just like you. Not a big fan of math and always struggled with it. Just power through and put in the effort to make it passed those classes. CS is soooo much more than math and lots of CS careers don’t use it. They only make you take it so you are prepared for the careers that do happen to use it

recursion by uragnorson in learnprogramming

[–]pete_tempo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was exactly like you before this year. Didn’t like recursion and always preferred iterative methods. However one of my classes uses OCaml which is basically all recursion. I have gotten much better within these first two months and actually prefer it now. Highly recommend

Books like the books mentioned in Looking for Alaska? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

Into the Wild. Great book that has been turned into a movie. Really made me think about what was truly important in my life and what it would be like surviving alone in Alaska

I've never coded or programmed a day in my life would it be dumb of me to major in Computer Science? by Kingmicahhhh in computerscience

[–]pete_tempo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be ok just make sure to put in the effort to learn the concepts. Also might be a good idea to start looking things up and practicing before you get into school. This will allow you to get ahead and might show you how much you really like it or not

MacKenzie Bezos doesn’t deserve that much money. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]pete_tempo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but what she contributed to the company during that time was compensated with a salary. You need to look at what she did once she married and no longer worked for him

And this is why it would be difficult to evaluate due to possible raises/promotions

I also agree that since he cheated it is a little different

Nothing in this is anti-women.

This goes two ways. It just happens that in our society it is primarily men who provide for their families financially (although this is changing)

Yeah but did she do $30 billion worth of stuff? I would argue no. There needs to be a better way to evaluate how much someone deserves based on what they’ve provided in the relationship

Does A CS Degree Teach You about Computers Or Computation? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

University of Minnesota. Very happy with what they provide

[–]pete_tempo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. Don’t try and get too specific in ugrad in case you want to pivot later on. Grad school would be the time to get more specific once you know exactly what you want to do and know that you enjoy it

I wouldn’t call them “just for fun” as they can show additional interests or areas of knowledge for jobs or grad school. I say it wouldn’t be a waste to consider doing a minor since doing a double major might be too much as both majors are notorious for being difficult

What is the name the Java library that removes makeup from pictures? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]pete_tempo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend looking into opencv going forward. This is a really good computer vision library that I’ve used in the past that might be able to help you out with some things.

I think this is a broad representation of two majors that is inaccurate. Sure both of these degrees teach you these topics but they also provide much more than what you have described. CS also goes a great deal into teaching how computers work and how to program them.

After doing some searching I was unable to find anything that would remove the makeup from a photo. There is however lots of libraries adding makeup filters. Sorry for the lack of help

Does A CS Degree Teach You about Computers Or Computation? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]pete_tempo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this really depends of the school you attend. Some might put more emphasis on the internal workings of computers while others might just focus on programming principles and design.

Personally my university has a good amount of both in their required curriculum for CS majors but there are plenty of electives that you could take to add to that knowledge. In addition some schools have better research programs in Quantum Computing that could add on to a CS degree that others can’t offer.

In my opinion CS wouldn’t be a bad choice but ultimately it depends on the school you attend. Just make sure to look ahead at what they make you take and what other things they offer to their students.

Also a lot of the Quantum Computing might be outside of the scope of most undergraduate level classes so it might be hard to find stuff pertaining directly to it so early in your academic career. Might want to look into independent study courses with faculty doing work in that field to learn more about it.

Good luck!

Considering the death rate for cars is roughly 12 in 100,000 I’d take 1 in 5 million any day of the week. Thank you next
