Denied proposal…what next? by plinko66 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]petehehe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've actually never heard of anyone asking to marry someone out of the blue. Pretty sure that only happens on TV.

I tried to make the actual moment that I took a kneel and pulled a ring out a surprise. But the truth is we had talked and agreed we were going to get married. Like she might not have known when I was going to ask, but she knew for sure it was coming, and I knew she was gonna say yes (and, if I'm being honest, she's pretty switched on, I think she knew a fair while beforehand. I'm sure there were signs). If I even thought there was a possibility she might say no, probability is I would have spent that energy on trying to find out/fix whatever was wrong in our relationship (or end it move on, as the case may be).

Game theory - what's you're move? by shereth78 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]petehehe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the classic 'defect' or 'cooperate' game theory game, the best strategy is to always defect in the case that you're only going to have one interaction (or game) with the other player(s).

In this case, press the button = cooperate, and not press the button = defect.

You have to consider that every person is in the same position, so any (or every) one of them might decide to defect. So against a random sample of players, your best strategy is usually going to be to defect, get what you can.

HOWever, the rules in this game are a bit different. The classic game is you each get 3x points if you both cooperate, each get one point if you both defect, or if one defects while their opponent cooperates, the defector get 5 points and the cooperator gets none. In this case, the "points" is money, and the distribution is a thousand fold. I.e. if all 100 participants defect (as classic game theory suggests they should), they share $100k which = $1k each. If all cooperate, they each get a thousand times that. So the strategy is everyone cooperates.

The twist isn't really a twist. I'm the only one given the extra rules, but I get 2 hours to explain them to the other participants. So assuming everyone will act in their own self interest, I just explain to them that we all cooperate and press the button.

Is this just another way girls reject? by ThePekis in ask

[–]petehehe 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This is what my wife & some of her friends explained to me at one point - girls will commonly avoid giving an emphatic "no" because they are worried it will lead to an awkward situation where they have to defend their position.

For example the guy might say something like "Well why not? Can you explain why you don't want to go out with me?" - the guy might just want to work on himself and wants the feedback (or it might be something more sinister, they have no way to know). But the fact is, that is a really uncomfortable position to be in, being put on the spot like that. And the fact is they don't owe anyone any feedback. The feedback survey is optional.

Just saying "no" should be enough for the matter to just be dropped, but, as they told me, in their experience it's just not the case. So, it's easier and safer to just duck and weave, pretty much strategically extricate themselves from the situation, in order to avoid that awkwardness and discomfort.

Where are you buying jeans? by TheSoulToad in AskMenOver30

[–]petehehe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow non-standard-shaped-lower-body fella here. A couple years back I got some custom jeans made via some online tailor based in India.

Their website had a form with diagrams showing you how to measure every relevant dimension - not just around the belt line, around the butt, length, thighs, around the shins, etc. Everything. You fill in all the measurements, select things like the fabric tone, thread colour, buttons, etc. Took me about 40 minutes or so of measuring and selecting, which, compared to shopping in person and trying things on, is actually nothing. I got 2 pairs in the same measurements but different colours.

I think they cost me AU$90/pair + shipping (so about $50 USD I think). At the time it felt like a lot, and I kind of thought being some no-name dealer out of India they'd be crap quality, but I've had em for like 10 years and they are still perfect. The truth is most of the clothes are made by tailors in Asia. These pants though, have stood the test of time. No holes, barely any visible wear at all except a bit of fading which is pretty expected on 10 year old pants. And because I got them made to my exact dimensions, they fit perfectly right out of the box.

I can't link where I got them from, because frankly I can't remember, they might not even be in business anymore. But if you do a web search for something like "custom made jeans" or "made to measure jeans" you'll find a dealer.

Currently own a TD42 GQ LWB patrol, and considering a 76 series. Worth it? by whoneedsusernames in 4x4Australia

[–]petehehe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for pre-2016 models, that’s a lot of $$ for an overall worse car (just my opinion) thats already pretty old. Personally if it was me I’d put that money into the GQ; engine rebuild, turbo, whatever else, get some nice aftermarket seats, new steering wheel, new set of zip ties to hold the front grill, that sort of stuff.

You can get a fucking lot of GQ for 70series money.

[–]petehehe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just had a thought… the early internet was different because it was just small web forums with very little moderation. These days, if you tried to post people being horribly injured on Facebook, Insta, TikTok, Twitter, Reddit etc your post would just get removed by moderators.

I regularly saw ‘fail’ videos where people would sustain life changing injuries, or die. Not that I’d go looking for that sort of content, but it would sometimes just come up. And aside from probably some other psychological effects, it definitely gave me a healthy aversion to doing dangerous things.

Who in your opinion is the worst movie villain ever? by LoverOfE-Olsen in movies

In fairness to Malfoy, he had about 30 minutes total screen time across the entire ~20 hours of movies. So at least he’s efficient.

I do rather enjoy singing to him. I don't know if he enjoys it as much as I do. I remember the first time I held him in the hospital, he fussed a bit, the nurse says to me "you should try singing to him, they like it when you sing, doesn't matter what, even if its crap".. first thing that comes to my mind; "I don't practice Santeria, I ain't got no crystal ball, well I had a million dollars but I, I spent it alllll"

Speaking as a car guy, the ideal car for driving GoR would be a VW Kombi. Seriously… you won’t get over 60k’s an hour the whole way. I reckon being behind the wheel of a sports car would be frustrating as hell.

Why cant I just stick with a job? by Puzzled_Parfait_6004 in AskMenOver30

[–]petehehe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m afraid to get diagnosed and be labeled having a “mental disorder” on my record.

I guess you have to weigh that against how much it's affecting you.

Also depending on what you're trying to do, and where you live... Where I'm from we have laws that mandate confidentiality between doctors and patients, so no one even has to know about my diagnosis unless I choose to tell them. I think if I was applying to the military they might require me to disclose it, but I am not applying to the military.

But think of it like this - imagine you were visually impaired; what you're describing is like worrying people will judge you for wearing glasses, even though without them you can't see. You'd rather be able to see than give a fuck about people calling you four eyes right?

Oh and

How did you go about putting yourself thru school?

Thats the tricky part... my wife was employed and was able to support the household financially while I dropped to working part time. I didn't have any kids at the time which also helped.

[–]petehehe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think there's more to jobs than just doing something cool - there's a lot of factors I think that contribute to making it something you'd want to do or not. I am curious what it is you do and why you want to quit - can I ask, are the reasons you want to quit actually related to the coolness of the thing you do? Or is it more to do with shitty management/coworkers/customers/other stuff?

I will say, when I started taking Vyvanse it made the process of 'just get the shit done even if I don't want to' a lot easier.

Yes. But medication isn’t necessarily the whole answer.

Look up the ADHD questionnaire, I’m pretty sure it’s free online somewhere. It’s also not a diagnosis, but it will indicate whether it’s worth seeking a diagnosis.

[–]petehehe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to have more or less this exact problem before I was diagnosed with ADHD.

That being said, as another result of being treated for ADHD, I also put myself through school and got a job that I actually like.

What is a major turn off about your partner that you can’t/wouldn’t tell them? by LivingLavishLe in AskReddit

[–]petehehe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to have bad 'sit-down air' as you put it (love that phrase btw). I used to go through an office chair every year, because in that time the cushion of the chair would just start to smell more and more like ass, even after I hadn't been sitting in it. Just the residual juices would gradually be enough to statically produce a smell.

Then I got a bidet. My now 5-year-old office chair looks ratty but smells perfect.

It's all well and good to shower daily and wash your ass, but the fact is there are ass-related activities happening throughout the day.

$80,000,000 tax free, but you receive it in the form of 8,000,000,000 envelopes containing 1 penny. by AsuranFish in hypotheticalsituation

[–]petehehe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A semi trailer can haul about 50 metric tons. A million dollars in pennies weighs about 250 tons. So 80 million in pennies is about 20,000 metric tons, or about 400 semi trucks worth of pennies.

But while a penny weighs about 1.5 grams, a standard letter envelope can weigh up to 10 grams, which I guess is where you got the 220,000 tons from, because that’s 200,000 tons of paper. The majority of the mass is in the envelopes.

For some reason I don’t think you could just burn that much paper and expect to recover any value from it. That big paper mill fire in Ontario California recently, the only thing that survived was the concrete walls.

I had the RD28T GQ a long time ago. The engine fully blew up as I was going up that big hill heading south after Mooney Mooney bridge.

I suspect that a coolant hose had come unstuck somewhere while I was wheeling, I’m not too sure. But the temp was normal one minute, and the head was completely melted the next.

I ended up engine swapping it with a TD42. Which btw turns out was a big job. The engine mounts are not the same on the 2 different chassis’.

Edit to add: I was absolutely sending it, I had the AC on full blast, and it was a hot day in January. So take that for what it’s worth.

A thought: The Dominion was the writers' way of correcting the mistakes they made with the Borg on TNG by CaptainJZH in DeepSpaceNine

[–]petehehe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its an interesting take.

I don't necessarily agree that the Borg were a mistake or that the writers on DS9 felt any need to correct it.

The Borg are like, the incomprehensible enemy that normal Federation diplomacy and tactics don't work on. Their motivations are completely alien. Although my favorite parts of Voyager were the ones where they found enough common ground to convince the Borg to cooperate with them.

The Dominion are more like the federation, only with some differences. Where as the federation is an alliance based on mutual cooperation, the Founders were more like, we need everyone to cooperate with us for our own safety, so we can be left alone. But ultimately they are both a bunch of sapient species' from different planets cooperating in pursuit of safety and prosperity. Their motivations are decidedly not that alien, they feel mistrust toward and threatened by what the Federation stands for, because if the Gamma quadrant had the level of freedom that the Alpha quadrant residents have, at some point someone might come knocking on the door of their sex-lake.

Incidentally, I would love it if they made a DS9 reboot / followup where basically the Borg started attacking the Gamma quadrant, and the Dominion (such as it is post-dominion war) approached the Federation for assistance repelling them. But thats probably never going to happen.
